Started running for the first time this evening

I started running, never really ran before, and was never good at pacing (I always just sprinted). Tonight I decided to run when I got home because I wasn't able to bike to school. I ran for 4.2 miles at around 9:30/mile. It is the first time in awhile that my limbs are limiting me and not my heart. I usually just go for long rides on my bike so endurance-wise I was fine, but I get that feeling in my legs from muscles that aren't used to being used, and know that I shouldn't do anything running wise for the rest of the night. Haven't felt that in quite some time.

I don't know if this is the right forum to put it in, but I just wanted to tell someone, and wasn't about to go sign up to a running forum just yet.

I consider myself a runner, first. 4+ miles at that pace, for the first time, is excellent. Key to running, especially as a beginner, is not to go too far or too fast until you know your training level. It is easy to get injured as a beginner (come to think of it, it's not that hard to get injured even when you're experienced...).

Your calves might ache for awhile are being absent from running for a while.I find the bike is more quads and running is lower down.A good running technique should come from the hips actually(hips high and knees up).i always remember in my early days my sprint coach saying knees up knees up haha

Yeah, I had to lay off any exertion friday, as my knees were done for. Still stiffish early saturday, but feeling well by the evening and participated in an alley cat race (more for fun than competitive, but I ended up getting 5th!) and woke up today with my knee hurting again, and had get someone to fill in for a couple soccer games I was supposed to referee, because I don't wan't to screw up my legs by not resting them enough.

I too just started running again a couple days ago. Some 5ks under the belt now but holy cow did the tops of my legs hurt for the next 2 to 3 days. I haven't run more than a mile in close to 13 years or so. I am hoping I can keep myself from ever feeling like that again without a major accomplishment to show for it. Congrats on the on the pain and self improvement. I have already found it has made me a stronger cyclist ALREADY.

I just did the same thing two night ago. I started cycling a little over 3 months ago and have been trying to build up my endurance. I have never had good endurance. So I decided I would try running just a bit to see how it went. I only aimed to do a mile and did it at about 9:30. The last time I ran a mile was 11 years ago when I was 18. I was glad I could finish it. The next day the muscles on the sides of my hips were fairly sore as were the muscles on my shins. I also don't own any running shoes so it was completely uncomfortable to run. I do plan on throwing in more running for myself once I have good shoes and probably interchange some walking with my running at first to see how it goes.

I injured my left knee a little bit running the other night. I had to skip my ride today. I hope it doesn't affect too much. I am trying to keep off it and use it semi-normally. Going down stairs hurts a lot.
