I had a huge expository post describing my theories, but I've been beaten by guys with "smaller" bases than mine so I'll keep my theories to myself and see how they work.

If the need to take recovery days is interrupting your base building, your base building is too intense. Then, this makes you ask "what's a huge base?" or better yet, "how big does your base need to be for the events you're racing?"

Stuff I've read about with you guys here. I'm REALLY thinking I need to get a book and to see who I can kill (ahem..I mean persuade) to get a power tap so I can use my time more efficiently.

I used to think the genetics were holding me back too. At the level of TX Cat 3s, it's the trainable. Trust me. You raise your threshold, and a fast Cat 3 pack isn't taxing any more (at all, not even a little). It lowers the bar, then you just hop over it in the last kilo.

Weather is beautiful. Got out for a tempo ride at lunch after yesteday's FAIL. Felt good. Tomorrow - 2.5-3 hours tempoish effort on a 50 mile charity ride. The "ish" depends if I'm hanging with a faster group or with a more sociable group. I'm looking forward to the sociable thing, but if that doesn't come together...zooom....

Out for a quick spin to (hopefully) open up my legs for tomorrow. My next ride will be the Tour of the Battenkill, about 18 hours from now. I'm about as prepared as I could possibly hope to be. I just hope it's enough!

Well, starting at 105 is pretty respectable. My best 5" power numbers are always from 100 to 130 or so. If I start at 110 rpm or more, I can't get as much power down. It's important to be able to wind it up, for sure, but not always the most powerful.
105 is certainly better than 85 rpm, which is really common for the lower cats in the sprints.

WR: previous best was 1,054 for 5s.
I didn't do much different. I've been doing a lot more shorter efforts. 1-3 minutes.
Today was just attempts at bettering my 5s. It almost feels like I've broken through a plateau.

Enthalpic, I see what you were getting at now. My PT told me I did in fact have tendonitis and she thinks it has something to do with the support my insoles offer.
I'm going to a specialized shop tomorrow to see if they have any insoles that could help so I can get back to riding!

That's the plan! I'm really gonna have to test after an easier week. Most of my tests have been spur of the moment. Like: "Hey, I feel pretty good. I think I'll test my 5s." haha!

First day I've been able to put a shoe on my right foot too.
Feel very happy

That actually works well for me for the 5" and 1' tests. 5', 20', and MAP, I need to be recovered.

101miles, over 6000' climbing, 20.5mph average.
more tomorrow.
edit: my friend's data download said it was more like 7500' of climbing. I'll take that. It felt like more.
There were places (NC Mountains) where I was begging for a 27. Shifting like one existed.

Nice subby!
My training status: Not happening.
My PT thinks my insoles are causing the problem.
I'm going to a bike shop on tuesday morning to see if different insoles will support my feet more and help.

1x10@95% and 5x5 @ 395, 398, 401, 404, and 420.
The last 5' interval was a pr by 6 watts. I should retest 5' power.

My guess was that you have excessive pronation which puts extra load on the calf muscle; after the calf fatigues (cramps?) you begin to damage the Achilles.
