Have a Happy and Safe New Year BF!.

Thanks for all the inspiring race reports, training talk and general banter. You are a much better time sink than (most) TV.

Junior got the congressional nomination for the Air Force Academy tonight. Might get one for others in Jan. Pretty exciting, but still quite a long road ahead.
This would affect summer racing.

One of my team mates raced Collegiate for the Naval Academy. He loved it, and says the schedule at the Academy gave him plenty of time to train.

@Doge - That is awesome! Graduation from one of the service academies is impressive on a resume, and the responsibility he'd get during his service commitment would be more than he'd see during the start of a civilian career. If he decided to make the military a career, it can be very fulfilling.

Congrats. I'd have to imagine he'd get some good riding in if the time is available.

Good work and good luck junior doge! My dad went to USAFA, and I was an Air Force brat during the Vietnam era. A good friend from HS went to the Academy as well. Those eras were very different from each other and I'm sure things are even more different today.

As the parent of a high school kid myself, I can imagine how relieved your bank account must feel!

Congrats on the options @Doge - but if you don't like some decisions USAC makes you might have some issues with the way the military works!

Thanks all. He is not in. He just got the congressional nomination, which in SoCal is somewhat hard to do - there is a long road ahead (and maybe some other options). The equivalent of getting to the start line of a prestigious race.

USAC and military are/should have different roles - IMO. But yeh, I expect if the other guy gets to fly an F35 based on age alone - that might bother me.

So while not near a done deal - exciting all the same. He would likely race for them. All the academies require athletic involvement. AFA races against Fort Lewis and appear to be a better cycling school.

The AFA and Fort Lewis shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence when it comes to academics.

Even if your son decides to hang up his wheels and not race a mile while at the AFA, he'd graduate with a degree that is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars more, over the course of his post-military career, than a degree from FLC.

Yes, there is a lot of drudgery in the active duty military (unless you're an aviator, perhaps). But probably more time for cycling and other pursuits in the AF, compared to the other services, based upon what my friends tell me (two active duty AFA grads at school with me).

I agree with you. Maybe I didn't word it correctly. This age several kids around his ability get cycling development team pro jobs. That is very tempting to a 17 year old. We (parents) are thrilled that that is not #1 on the list. Personally I'd like him being like "you folks" than a cycling pro as glamorous as it sounds.

The common agreement is got to do something athletic hard in college. Rowing or cycling. So being in CO Springs (I worked there once) and racing against FLC - is a good thing for cycling.
But it is still a long shot. I was just excited about the nomination.

Too bad that "where you went to school" has such influence in society.

Why? If a kid works hard and gets into a good school and then does well there, why shouldn't that open doors for them? Ten years into a career no one cares where anyone went to school any more.

The junior (ex, I guess) who rode for us got a scholarship to fort lewis, but they wouldn't promise him he'd race his freshman year. He chose the ride for foundation, and then turned pro for champ-system. They folded this winter after his neo-pro season. I think he's back on Foundation for next year. I like the sport, but wouldn't want that for my kid.

Happy New Year all. Back from another ride. That's two in as many weeks I think. It's becoming a regular habit or something.

My mother in law is here for the next couple months until the baby comes. I'm not sure I'm gonna make it. She narrates movies, and that's the least of my issues with her. Should give me more time to ride and get stuff done at least, and I know my wife loves having her here, so I'll deal.
