Isn't that early 80s (maybe late 70s, but don't remember it as we had no access to the net back in those days but local bike shops. Oh and the lack of funds as kids) 70s were cloth tape.

I was still riding BMX in the 70's, but I know what screams 80's: those goddam cycling caps with the bill turned up:

I had a 71 sports tourer and a 71 paramount that both had the bennotto style root beer brown glitter tape.

I believe Schwinn's from that era used Hunt Wilde vinyl tape. Maybe they used both depending on bike color?

These were both root beer brown, it probably was Hunt-Wilde, that is the style tape I was trying to reference. Thanks.

Schwinn used Sierra Brown tape (made by Hunt Wilde) on Sierra Brown bikes. They did not use Benotto tape at that time.

1970 - helping my Dad patch a flat on my "english racer". It was a Raleigh single speed we got at a garage sale. I tried to convince kids it was cooler than their Stingrays with banana seats, but couldn't do wheelies or jump ramps 'cause my weight wouldn't shift far enough back.

The patches clamped on, and had a metal cup backing filled with some sulfurous mix. You found the hole, clamped the patch on, lit the back, let it cool and presto! Vulcanized patch!

That patch kit and method look as though they go back a bit farther than the 70's!

My mom and step-dad owned a small truck stop in the 70's. I patched a lot of semi tire tubes with those patches. As an 80 pound kid, I also learned to use leverage to wrestle those 100 pound truck tires.

OK, another thing like hairnets that really should be said is that was sparkly stuff was everywhere! Glitter tape, glitter grips, glitter seats, glitter streamers, glitter paint. Schwinn was a primary pusher of this look, but hardly the only one.

Benotto tape was in the 80s, I was there. It was imported and iridescent, not sparkly.

Foam Handlebars; I learned I actually found them comfortable and useful. On another bike, I use some sort of soft plumbing pipe insulation because it is similar. They are another thing that get a bad rap from time to time but I've never used them in anything but black but I am aware they come in other colors.

I had much pain when I first started riding.

Used some pipe foam to start with.

I'm not sure if anyone ever got killed with a death fork but the darn thing did obviously break for quite a few people, it was a real danger.

Here is an article from back then: Yamaha recalls bicycle forks - CSMonitor.com

Some 30 complaints about the defective cast aluminum part have been received by Yamaha since the bikes were introduced. Twelve of the cases have involved injuries. The bikes were distributed from September 1974 to Oc tober 1977.

CCM Concorde, straight gauge 531 for the 3 main tubes. This photo shows the Mixte, I have the man's model, nice color of lavender.

Raleigh ad, did someone say "Disraeili Gears"? This looks like the band Cream were the models.

That's exactly where I put my foam on some handlebars and the nice thing is that if it ever wears out, just cut off some more. I think the pipe covering itself was about $7 for 6 feet. I also have some old foam handlbar covers on one set of drop bars. I found I enjoy it as much as regular handlebar coverings.

1981 but this guy, John Marino, won one of the early Race Across America (RAAM), so reading his cycling book was fairly helpful just like Greg Lemond's book and so on, there seemed to have been a number of total cycling books.

I have a touring book too written by a woman from the 1970s, touring the Midwest; it really is interesting getting her take and it is very retro too if I can find it later. I can't remember the name, it goes from her selecting her touring bicycle onward to where they road.

This is not my bike but I found this picture of this bike that has this bag hanging on it, I had never seen this before.

The twist of the story is that in the past few years, I got a vintage bike and it had these two rings on it and we could not figure it out. They did not look like pump pegs. Upon seeing this picture, I think the rings must have been for a bag as in the picture. I did take the rings off, they were not of great use and had no real attachment to it.

Has anyone ever seen rings like these to hold a bag? That bag too, is a bit curious.

Bicycling the Midwest, great book, very retro.

There are a number of other manuals as well, after all, Glenn and Sloans bike books are among the many Bibles out there for me.

Sloane's is the other one.

LOL, yeah, I remember those. I never liked wearing gloves much, partly for that reason.

My fave were those ones made entirely out of chamois leather, no crochet work, with a green felt strip on the palm. Can't recall the brand. We called the Eddy Merckx gloves 'cause he would often wear them.
