Didn't know what to make of him when he arrived on the scene, but over the years I became a big fan. Definitely a visonary.

A sad loss for sure; such a colossal talent. It was like he had large doses of James Brown, George Clinton, Tod Rundgren, Hendrix, Duke Ellington and probably 1/2 dozen others packed into that tiny frame, but a style that was completely his own. He will be missed but thank goodness we still have his music.

If you haven't done it already, go to YouTube and find his Super Bowl show, greatest of all time. Performed with lightning and in a rain storm, legend is when informed his response was to the effect of "Can we make it rain more."

I wanted to share, our local radio station - The Current - is doing some great tributes for Prince. Here's an article on The Daily Beast:
How a Local Radio Station Became the World?s Prince Memorial - The Daily Beast
If your interested, you can stream The Current here: Live Stream | The Current from Minnesota Public Radio I think they are starting the Prince A-to-Z marathon at 6:00 (Central Time).
I have some serious mixed emotions about last night, there was an amazing event outside First Avenue - But we scored some last minute tickets to the Mumford & Sons show in St Paul. We ended up going to see Mumford and it was wonderful.
It turned into a Prince sing-a-long/dance party before Mumford took the stage, the house music was turned up loud and it was all Prince, Lisa took this picture when Purple Rain was playing:

And in a great tribute Mumford & Sons played Nothing Compares 2 U - One thing that made this tribute special was Mumford bringing out Blake Mills with his band (the openers). In fact, I can't think of a show when the headlining band spent so much on stage time with the opening band.

1. The whole Purple Rain album, but most of all "When Doves Cry." It was huge for a reason. There's so much going on in that track -- passion, soul, technique -- but pay special attention to A) the drum machine -- Prince really was the master of programmed drums as an instrument with human feeling -- and B) the open space. No bassline on that song!
2. "When You Were Mine." You want manic bubblegum pop thrills, you got manic bubblegum pop thrills.
3. "Lady Cab Driver." Wanna know what Prince's funk was all about? Also the best roller-skating song ever.
4. "If I Was Your Girlfriend." Freaky, sad, hilarious, and moving, all at once.
5. "Space," from the Come album. 'Cause Prince could be smoove, too.
Damn, I feel like I need to cleanse myself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, right about now.

(edit afterthought) - I'm very proud to call Minneapolis home; when you see a diverse group of private (First Avenue), public (city & PD), non-profit (The Current), a ton of independent artist, and many others come together inside of 4-5 hours to put together a tribute like the street party last night.

The New Yorker arrived the day before yesterday, with a cover called "Closing Set." It shows an ecstatic audience and the back of a guitar headstock.

I was reading an article about Paul McCartney in it.... and looking at the cover... yesterday morning before getting on my bike to go to work. Great cover.
After hearing the news about Prince, I saw that cover again, and thought: wow. And that's not about Prince? Well... prescient, somehow?
Anyway, next week's New Yorker will have a Prince-related cover:

It's funny how so much of Prince's YouTube stuff is him doing covers. Some great stuff there.

It's really surprising how little is known about him personally, considering how long he was active. Unlike stars who head for New York or L.A. as soon as they make it, attend all the big parties and clubs, are always in the tabloids, Prince seemed to be a pretty "normal" guy. He still lived in MN where he grew up and we didn't see Tweets or Snapchat posts about him every day. He seemed to be a private man, all about his love of creating music and art not the fame it could bring him. I really do admire and respect him for that.

Well I have heard their subscription base has been declining lately.

He was oddly private, yet like you said pretty "normal". Just on Saturday (record store day), he stopped in to the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis to buy some albums. I was at the Electric Fetus last year on record store day and it was packed "guts-to-butts". So, he didn't avoid crowds or public places, but yet he maintained a unique privacy. More than private, I would call him an enigma. A beautiful enigma.
Side story, Lisa (Mrs Toad) grew up near Prince's practice space. In junior high, she and her friends would hang out in the alley and listen to the early version of Prince and The Revolution. This was years before Purple Rain.
