Some at First Avenue.
Many arena shows around the country.
Some at Paisley Park.
Some at Glam Slam.
Some at his practice space many, many years ago.
Devastating news......
So sorry for his family.
Fwiw I totally agree on the Bowie topic as well. I'm still playing them all and it's bringing back so many memories.

one of the articles in playboy that I remember from my youth- when I was not being distracted by other **things- was "Everyone wants to have sex with Prince" not only his music, but his image and his commitment to himself was inspiring.
slightly off topic but still on the death theme:
the other article I still remember (formative years) was one with two sisters, the younger having cancer and asking "why me?" and the older saying: don't ask why me, but rather.. why not you? none of us are so special that we don't die.

Many don't realize how young Prince was when he really hit it.
Tremendous talent, fame, and fortune when he was really young.
One of those genius talents who worked as hard as he was smart.
Like Bowie, he was fearless, driven, and influenced far more musicians than "the public" will ever know.
Really a humble guy, had a very dry sense of humor, and had a knack for seeing potential.
Clive Davis said Prince had the best ears in the business, that he heard things people hadn't thought of.

This one really hurts. I was in my early 20s when he hit big, his music was the soundtrack of my young adulthood. A great musician and an important milestone in the history of popular music.

Back in the mid 80's during college, when Bacon and Quicksilver made wearing another man's gross filled beret somewhat cool, I returned again and again to the local army surplus store, always hoping to find a raspberry beret. Sadly, no such luck. RIP Prince; you were an original.

I am not intending in any way to dishonor the dead, however, for me, Bowie's music has not stood the test of time.
I find it hard to get behind "Major Tom", a song about a junkie getting high and overdosing on heroine. I just can't go there. When I was a kid, in the middle of "the race to the moon", I thought it was a take-off on the space age. I was wrong. There are similar things I dislike about much of his music.
Prince, I never liked, so I never listened. It's as simple as that. The news played a short video of Prince playing George Harrison's, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". The thing is, that's Harrison's music (which I like).
What pieces of Prince's music should I listen to (Youtube) which you think present him at his best?

Prince was definitely the antithesis of the over-produced music we hear today.

While not a big fan of his music, I became impressed by his genius when his first album came out in 1978. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_You_(Prince_album) A friend had just bought it and was all excited to show it to me... "look at the back, look at the credits". EVERY song was written and composed by him, he played EVERY instrument, he produced it and mixed it. He did everything except press the vinyl.

My wife made me a fan when we were dating 30 years ago. She did this really cool dance to Darling Nicki that knocked my socks off and I was an instant convert. He was truly a great talent.

I don't really do the celebrity hero worship thing, but Prince...
The one time I saw him live (Jam of the Year Tour, 95 or 6 I think, billed as "The Artist") was still the best show I've ever seen; I left that night all but ready to sell off my guitars and quit entirely. He'd slam one song into another, then segue into another in this epic medley and then be back in the first one before you even realized that's where you were headed the whole time. Went offstage in the middle of one song, came back with a bass and ripped off an epic Jimi-esque solo on it with full fuzz and wah, then traded the bass for a guitar and took it up another notch from there. It was unreal. Amazing. And somewhat sad too, as a young musician realizing -- with exactly zero uncertainty -- there was this whole other plane of ability that you could gaze on and feel and admire and love, but couldn't achieve. Ever.
That man could play.
I've had to think about my answer, but the obvious answer is the right one. And you'll not find it on youtube; Prince was very protective of his music.
Anyway, listen to the Purple Rain album from start to finish. Not a song here, a song there. Buy the album and listen, start to finish.
You'll get an idea what all the fuss is about.
...My next post will be about bikes. hahahahaha
