Masi USA - - Who made me?

This is supposed to be 1989 model. Made in Italy frameset - kinda hard to see but below the one flag thing in white. I know there is a large Masi faq fund here so can anyone tell me who it was maybe that actually make this frameset?

many thanks
Charlie

Bikes: old ones

.
...the Nuovo Strada was supposed to be contract built by either Bilato or maybe Mondonico, and painted in the USofA. There are a couple of older threads here, which you can find by using Google and limiting your search string to "Masi Nuovo Strada, Bike Forums, and 1980's".

Otherwise, they seem to have varied quite a bit from year to year when offered. You see them in different frame tubings and with different component groups over the years they were offered as a cheaper alternative to a 3V or a GC.

I did the search thing before I posted. I'm guessing that it is an '87 tho the original owner said it was purchased in '89. But that is NBD. Mostly I'm curious about the BB having MASI cast into it if Billato did the frame since they seemed to have used Cinelli? So who sourced the BB's?

Not that it all actually really matters since the thing is here to stay. Rides just like the '81 Colnago and that is a GOOD THING! Actually may be just a taste quicker but no ***** here. May have to track down some age-appropriate Campy but the 8spd DA is just fine.

Anyone else has any further info I'd still be happy to know

thanks again
Charlie

The incised MASI on the bottom bracket shell could have been cut in as an alternate to casting in.
Could also have been part of a sliding plug into the wax mold, every wax and every part comes out with the decoration.
The seat stay cap plug and the rear brake bridge decoration are cast in.

Great website -- thanks for the link. One could also contact Jim "CyclArt" Cunningham, who painted many of the American Masis.

It has a very cast-in look to it. I understand about lost wax casting. And there is no other logo/name on it.

No, not Repaint - just the then standard Masi USA paint job.

The serial# is still semi-problematic and the serial# discussions and the registry don't seem to actually make things all that clear. I pretty much scoured the 'net before I came here so as to not waste other peoples' time too hahaha Like I mentioned, I'm just guessing on the '87 date but it seems reasonable.

I thought it was a Builder in Southern California .. Only the Volumetrica stayed in italy .

[Masi name now is applied by builders on Bicycle Island , TW.]

I sent out a crashed one for re placing the top & down tube and got it back repainted and re decal ed under clear coat.

then re sold it

Got an AlAn Road Frame-fork-seatpost, for nearly nothing. from the buyer of the good as New Masi

this was when I Was in SF in the 80's .. so no specifics to tell..

Looks like repaint. Look at paint on headtube at lower cup. Looks like bad masking job.

Wrong Jim for this era.
Jim Allen of the Cyclesmiths in the San Diego County area is the guy who might recall.

The 3V was eventually made in the USA in addition to Masi Italy. Later it gets more complicated and some 3V's were made in Italy under contract but Not by Masi of the Vigorelli.

The subordinate models like the Gran Corsa and Nuova Strada were Italian contract made models. Some Gran Criteriums very late too.

I obtained the bike from the original owner. I'm quite certain that it is not a repaint. A repaint the quality of what's on it would cost more than what I paid for it. The bottom of the headtube had a tie-wrap cranked around it for 25yrs. And what is there to mask where the color is continuous?
Not a re-paint. Really.

Not a repaint

Certainly not a repaint. That's the same paint scheme as I had on my Masi Gran Criterium (except for the model designation, of course). My GC was made by Mondonico in 1990 I believe. I don't know who painted it.

I don't think it's a Cinelli BB shell, but can't tell you what brand it might be...maybe one of the large Italian investment casters such as Tecnociclo, Everest or Silva...anyhow my other guess is that "MASI" is not cast-in-place but engraved, ala "pantograph", but only a guess.

I have a Gran Corsa with the same BB. Here is a as purchased pic of it:

I am guessing about 1988 for mine. It is a TSI product as well. The paint is lovely to look at, too bad it didn't stick!

In real life the MASI doesn't look sharp enough for panto but that is JMO. The only way to tell would be to strip the paint and that ain't happenin' hahaha

Panto can be pretty darn sloppy depending on the wear on the burr plus the boredom (or hangover) of the engraver: it's hand-work...my expectation is that a casting would be sharper and more consistent, but even that process is subject to "tolerances"...anyhow, I'm speculating (and not a doctor)
