My Centurion ProTour

I picked this up while in a deep discussion with gugie about him heavily modifying a Raleigh Super Course for me, it went thru to a International but that frame would not take larger tires, so we discussed a Pro he had that he could modify for me when this popped up in the forsale section.

It has been sitting at my House in Lancaster PA While I was languishing over in Cambodia. Well I watched ebay and the C&V for sale section and found many parts and here is a start of the build. Right now I am test fitting parts and found that the 700cx47 Schwalbe tour guards won't work. So I will stay with the Panaracer700x42c tourguards I already have in Cambodia
I think it will be a real nice rando/credit card tourer.

I have the following to build this up
Shimano 5701 3x10 brifters
Shimano 5700 10 speed Rd
Shimano 6703 triple FD
Wheelset shimano DeoreLX hubs, SS spokes, Velocity Dyad rims
Acorn Med Rando bag and Saddle tool roll
Nitto Mike's rack with long supports to go to the Fork drop outs
Original Dia-comp center pull brakes that are stud mounted on seat stays and fork.
Dia-comp stem mounted cable stop
GP rando bars 42cm brown leather bar wrap
Sr riser stem
Sr seat post
Brooks Flyer seat
Shimano un-55 122mm sealed bottom bracket
Sakae CR cranks with 50-46-30 for a nice half step plus granny
Shimano XT 11-36 cassette 10 speed
KMC chain
Velo Orange zeppelin 50mm fenders
little bits and pieces
dia-comp cable housing clamps for the top tube
Might take a clamp on Shimano downtube shifter clamp and mount Dura-ace downtube cable stops
Not sure how to run the FD cable because the clamp-on FD cable stop/RD cable guide needs a FD with a cable stop

I think I have it all covereed

and I need a bar clamp for one of my brifters
and cable housing, might just go with black
and I need a double cable guide clamp on for downtube as the Shimano 6701 FD does not have a housing stop built in.

Bikes: It's complicated.

Looks like a real nice ride, congratulations! Keep us informed, maybe the BOC headed your way will have the bits you need to finish the build.

I'm interested to see how that RD does with that 36T cog. I've heard that geometry of RD is good to 34, even though they're rated to 27 or something like that.

I went conservative and topped out at 30, but I've got plenty of room for adjustment.

BTW- the Pro-Tours were THE flagship model for Centurion- these bikes stack up completely on par with the other flagship level bikes of their times. I think it's neat to see how the Schwinn Voyageur SP and the ProTour mirrored each other.

It's going to be an awesome bike!

Very cool bike! I'm sure it will be a very nice rando/credit card tourer, and IMO there's no reason it couldn't do loaded camping touring should you care to.

Braze on CP were very unusual during that time.

Does anyone know the geometry of these things? Looks like possibly 72.5 or 73 parallel, mid trail, 44 or 45cm chainstays?
EDIT: Never mind. Looked it up and in 1984 they were 72 parallel, 45mm rake (mid trail w 72) and 43.5cm chainstays. In '79 they were 73º parallel.

Bikes: yes

I just built up a 79 Pro Tour this spring, that I picked-up as just a frame w/headset.

 • 57cm frame with original Tange Falcon headset
 • Suntour Cyclone MkII derailleurs, with Suntour Barcons
 • Suntour ultra 6 spaced 13x32 freewheel, with KMC nickel plated chain
 • Sugino AT triple crank 52x42x26, with Suntour sealed bottom bracket
 • Specialized Touring pedals, with MKS caged toe clips
 • Suntour Cyclone sealed bearing hubs, laced to 27" Wolber Super Champion Gentleman rims
 • Nitto Noodle 42cm bars
 • Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem
 • New Dia Compe Gran Compe brake levers
 • Old Dia Compe Gran Compe centerpull brakes
 • Brooks B17
 • Dajia seatpost
 • I used the brown cable kits from VO, which are close to what would have come on the bike and which complement the brake hoods and bar wrap (amber shellacked Newbaums khaki)

The frame came with a few nicks, primarily on the non-drive side, the worst of which is near the seat lug.

I had the same issue with needing a cable stop for the front derailleur. Since the Cyclone didn't have an integrated one, I used an Origin8 single stop under it.
