Well, 400 miles+ along the north short of Lake Superior, from Thunder Bay to Duluth, and home came the Peugeot. The bike is very original and shows that it has not been used much. For the most part, it is in great shape except for a couple of rust spots, that I don't think I can completely clean up, on the chain stays. Easy enough to hide, but...

I was looking to see if you'd received it yesterday. I find my px-10 to have a great feel and I only wish I didn't have the plain bocama lugs but the fancy nervex ones.
Good luck on the rebuild. I'm sure it will turn out great and take photos of the process.

Because I really like vintage road bicycle and even more-so when the "how found" proves to be an interesting story. Have a look at How I Got the Carlton. Probably my best ever how found story.
Sadly, I sold the Carlton, only to find out later that the forks were a bit tweaked. Today, I know how to check frame/fork sets for true so that will not happen again.

Great example of an original PX-10 with the fancy lugs! For what it's worth you can get a date code from the rim where it's stamped MAVIC MONTLERY then under that says MADE IN FRANCE with something like 0972 etc. Also great website, I've referenced it a lot.

For what it's worth you can get a date code from the rim where it's stamped MAVIC MONTLERY then under that says MADE IN FRANCE with something like 0972 etc.

But the alloy serial number plate is long gone, leaving this confusing piece of information...

Anyway, the Peugeot is completely disassembled and ready for cleaning and polishing. Plus, to make it easier for me to rebuild the bike, I sorted all my Simplex, Mafac and Stronglight stuff into three separate boxes.

I think it's a '73. They moved the Reynolds decal to the down tube in '74.

Incredible bike Randy, anything other than that FD that is broken or stripped? As said, they don't come more original than that one. Perhaps another chapter for My Ten-Speeds is beginning, more people could learn some of the specifics about the venerable PX-10 lines.

Sometimes I wonder if there is some kind of bicycle deity(god) looking after me and my vintage bicycle interests..?
Yesterday morning, very early morning, I almost bit the bullet for a set of Mafac half hoods in black that were being offered on Ebay($30 US + shipping). But money is tight these days, so I went back to sitting on the "should I or shouldn't I" buy them fence. Lucky I waited...
Four hours later, on my first trip into the city since surgery, I picked up a nice old Jeunet for less than the hood set would have cost me(about half). All I wanted was the hoods and they look just great on my almost finished PX10E. With luck, I will have the bike road worthy(sort of because I can't afford new tubulars and the tape to mount them just now) enough to take it for a short no serious curves spin(gotta make sure that Mrs. Me does not get wind of this plan, considering my present health).
Anyway, the Jeunet and the hoods...


Now to decide on cloth tape(only have three sets of cloth left) or cheap cork/rubber tape, for the bars(only have two sets left but can get more for about two and a half bucks per set, shipped - I usually buy a dozen sets at a time).

Yup, cracked jockey wheel(pooey stinko), the kind with bearings rather then bushings. Just ordered a NOS set through Ebay and hope I am not getting screwed by the seller(promised to refund $27.00 US of the posted $34.00 cost to ship - we'll see but I do tend to trust first and grumble second).

I used Suntour pulley wheels in place of the bearinged pulley that came with the simplex.
So far, the only original item missing is a proper front derailleur and, believe it or not, I did have one that I gave away a few years back when I had to make storage room(gave a box full of Simplex stuff away, at that time). Not sure, but I think that this is the front derailleur I should be looking for(picture is from Velobase)...

Nice score on the hoods. They're getting very hard to find in useable shape. I managed to find a black pair from a early 70's UE-8 that went on my PX-50, then sold the UE-8 without hoods, and made $30 on the deal.

I believe the OEM one would have been a Super Competition AV3 2nd generation:

I just ordered one for my '71 PX-10 to replace the one you're showing in the pic (a Simplex Prestige), which was a temporary fix.

Hey Randy, you're a handy guy. At some point on BF, I read that you can make hoods with Plasti Dip®. I don't remember if the writer mentioned how. It would be nice if you can brush it on, but if not, some skillful dripping and drying should do the trick.

And I would do so, also, however; I have a few sets of Simplex pulleys tucked away. That said, I am trying to get this old French lady back to original specifications, right down to the proper freewheel. It just so happens that I have the correct one but not sure my old legs can push it properly. None the less, if it is French thread(and I think it is), I will install it and put the Suntour Perfect on the shelf, for the time being.

Thanks GB and that is the one that came with the bike. Now I feel, for sure that I know what to seek. There is one on Ebay right now, but for $80.00 USD + shipping, I will have to pass...

Perhaps I should attempt to repair the one that I have. There was a time when I could be pretty creative. I will give it some thought.
