Bikes: The keepers: 1969 Magneet Sprint, 1971 Gitane Tour de France, 1973 Raleigh Twenty, 3 - 1986 Rossins.
I'm not sure if this one goes under numbskull, arrogant a*****e, or rip-off:

The guy claims he's selling a 1977 Masi Confente. There are NO pictures, almost no details, a couple of line drawings of the head tube and head tube badge, and if you write asking about details you basically get a snotty, "how dare you?" attitude.
Oh yeah, the opening bid is $4500.00.
The CR list has been having a field day with this one.

As for my Numbskull Of The Day? Read the following:
A C-List seller responded to a vintage lightweight wanted ad of mine - says he has an Eddy Merekx for $550 in fair condition. I inquiried further into what he means by "Fair" condition. He responded and said it could use a repaint, and new gear/brake cables.
You've got to be kidding me. He probably got a value quote from that overcharging LBS of mine that I mentioned a few posts back. I remember they valued a Schwinn Varsity at $250 once. Go figure.
Take care,
-Kurt

This kind of ad is showing up with more and more frequency on Boston's Craig List. The ss/fg craze here is going still strong, so asking $275 for a mystery do-it-yourself job, poorly described and with no pics, is the norm.

this is truely a sweet conversion that i put alot of time into, but unfortunatly it is a bit to big for me as i foundout on the test ride when u finished
it still could use some tightning of the b.b. and rear hub, but it rides just fine anyway and looks awesome
the bike is good for someone around 6 feel tall
let me know if u want to see it, i can deliver it to davis sq. station is u want
ill put some pics up tonight or ask for them

Looks to be a circa '83 Motobecane Profil 3 (Shimano 600) and the fool tosses the wheels 'cause they're tubulars.

Bicycle needs to be cleaned the tires inflated. Of course this is why the price is $250 and not $500.
You can email or call: 773.524.4699
this is in or around Chicago / Ravenswood

Nashbar takes the cake for Numbskull Of The Week here.
Observe:
#1: Brand new ITM Mod 210 seatpost, 27.0, regular price $39.95, now $9.95.
#2: Returned/Used ITM Mod 210 seatpost, 26.8, regular price $19.95, now $9.98.
I'd like to see them justify the enormous difference in "Regular" price between the two items (to hell with the 27.0 vs 26.8 diameter, that's no excuse for a $20 price difference), and furthermore, why the returned seatpost is marked 3 cents higher in price then the brand new post.
Pricing hype, that's all it is. Markups to make their markdowns look better. Cheap sales tactics. Bull.

More Numbskull pricing from the LBS today.
This time, I tried a little test out by surveying a few of the employees at the shop what they'd ask for an NOS Shimano Sante derailer I pulled out of the back room, then asking the owner how much he'd price it at.
Repairman in back said he'd ask $20.
Fellow up front said $49.99, and swore up and down that the owner wouldn't price higher. He ultimately said he'd bet me a lunch on this.
Owner walked in the front door 5 minutes later, and announced to a riveted audience his price of...$80.
Nothing like an $80 Sante RD to make you want to bash a few Trek Y33s over the LBS owner's head.
Funny thing - there's a beat-up, but halfway decent one on eBay right now for a buck. Might go for it, for I'm looking to re-spec my '84 Raleigh Competition. As the frame is white peralecent/chrome, I figure the Sante group would fit right in.
Take care,
-Kurt

Reminds me of the woman (Name witheld), Ms
"Old Schwinn $75" from CL last week. No info at all. We email back and forth for a week, me asking for specific info as to what KIND of bike, what size tires, How "old"
it was, etc. She replies it's green, and "fat N squishy" like a beach cruiser would be. DUH!!! lol! I ask again for info, no response for three days. I finally
say.... "Okay this is not working, can I come see it in person?" She says, you can come by tomorrow (Saturday) after 10 AM. No address, no phone number, nothing!!
I never heard another word. She's either not really wanting to sell the bike, or a COMPLETE moron, who thinks I have ESP, haha.,,,,BD
Hey Kurt~! Miguel here. I finally found a chainguard for my Raleigh/Huffy Sportsman. Got it from
John Dempsey for $5 plus shipping. A little wrinkly, but I think I can salvage it. It's maroon paint
with gold lettering. Correct pinch/clamp style attachments, and the whole deal.
