I'll play along this morning. I just finished rebuilding a 1985 Miyata Pro. It's a full Suntour Superbe bike with triple-butted Miyata tubing. I love the ride and I can't wait to ride it some more. Not the greatest photo, but I finished it pretty late in the evening.

Very nice bike there Beech333 - I have to assume all the black anodizing is custom? -If so, it is effective and very tastefully done. The stem looks like an "I" stem from an old special racer. Kind'a cool.

The black RD is fairly hard to come by, but they are out there. One is on Ebay right now for a hefty $120(way more than fair market value, IMO) and another sold a while back for about $50. The shifters were an old find, from after I found my first black RD. I'm still looking for a FD, but the last one I saw was too beat up for this bike.

I don't know the details on the other black components. I suppose that Gene could have had good access to anodize them professionally, but he might also have had access to rare Japanese components.

Reinventing My Childhood Bike!

My first ten speed was a Fuji and when I saw this one, it reminded me of my first one. My first one was salvaged from the trash, and I made the bike functional. The bike in the photo is a 1977 Fuji Gran Tourer. I purchased it on Ebay for $40 (total investment of $85). The Tourer was completely disassembled and every piece cleaned. I used spray paint from an auto store and numerous coats of wax to restore the paint. Although by no means perfect, I am very pleased with the results.

Hello, I'm new here, but wanted to show a couple pictures of the 1983 Schwinn Super Sport(Japanese) that I just picked up. I think the only thing i have found that isn't original is the wheels which are Velocity Aeroheads.

Just finished the take down, clean and reassemble. My last road bike was a 1980-ish Sears bike with safety levers and what felt like pallet straps for bar wrapping. This is much lighter. I need to get someone from my MTB crowd to ride road with me, so that I can take this thing on a trip.



(edited: Just changed to a triple with a mtb rd, red bar tape, new wheels, set the rear to 135mm, and some new levers - because I can't find replacement hoods).

Now that my Fuji is nearing completion, I am desirous to show it off. It's an '83 Opus III frame with virtually no vintage parts. The drive train is a mix of Shimano Ultegra/Dura Ace 10s.

Another FUJI to add to the thread. I bought this Fuji "The Finest" new while I was in college in Madison, Wisconsin. I paid around $300 for this bike, about the same cost as a semester of tuition at the time. I was working part time to pay for this bike, but when my father learned about my purchase, he was hopping mad about such an extravagant amount of money for a bicycle.

Guilt is such a powerful weapon, my wife also knows about this skill. My father's angst compelled me to keep this bike in good shape and I rode it everywhere to justify my buying it.

In recent years I swapped out the Suntour components for Campagnolo. I still ride this bike on local century rides. It is a great chrome frame that provides a classic steel frame ride.

Very nice! You should have brought it down for the Chicago C&V ride last Saturday. Fuji was very well represented with a Club, Tiara, and Design Series.

This thread is interesting. What exactly defines a "Japanese bike"? A Japanese brand? Or any bike assembled in Japan? Is a Bianchi who's frame was brazed in Japan a Japanese bike?

great question. my trek 560 is made from american steel, brazed in wisconsin, and even has a "made in the USA" sticker, but as stock, just about every part that hung from the frame was japanese (literally every part save for the rims and saddle).

I don't think there is any hard or fast rule. I'd guess that if your bike has a Japanese name, regardless of country of origin, it qualifies. If it is a bike brand that one associates with Europe, USA, etc., but was made in Japan, it qualifies.

The FullPro-L sat above the FullPro in the line up. A FullPro is more or less alike a Team Miyata. I am not familiar with a FullPro-L equivilent for the US market. Raced by the Capri Sonne and IJsboerke teams.

Yes, they are the same. I do have another hardly ridden smaller one. It is too small for me. I consider building the group over to a nos Batavus Professional frame and hanging the frame on the wall. That team paint is a graphical delight in my opinion.

There also existed a mountainbike edition: Tange Prestige, welded or brazed with silver and that same team paint. Lush.
