Some people asked about the stem spacer combo used on the Bob Jackson via PM, but I can't reply because I don't have the required post count so here's what I did to make the stem adapter work:
The spacer and adapter combo i used is kind of complicated, but when its all put together it works very well and looks clean. Here's what I did:
Point One Racing 20mm spacer - got it from here: Titanium Top Caps, Titanium Headset Spacers, Anodized spacers
Deda Quill Stem adapter - wiggle.com | Deda Quill Stem Adapter | Standard Stems
Thomson Stem Shim - wiggle.com | Thomson Stem Shim | Standard Stems
Thomson X2 Road Stem - wiggle.com | Thomson Elite X2 Oversized Road Stem | Oversize Stems
So the point one spacer is a 1 1/8" spacer and the Deda adapter is a 1" adapter. The Thomson shim slides over the Deda adapter. Now the shim is 40mm high and the Thomson X2 stem is 36mm high. This 4mm lip is what the top of the spacer slides up on to to keep it centered. It's important that you get the 40mm high shim and not the 36mm high one that is spaced exactly for the X2 stem because then the spacer would have nothing to slide on to. If you don't use an X2 stem you would have to get one with a stack height under 40mm for that scheme to work.
You could possibly use a different stem adapter that is 1 1/8" and disperse with the shim idea above, but I used the Deda one because its quite a bit lighter and the shim is the same black as the stem. The Point One spacer will work either way, it's 1 1/8" inside diameter for sure.
Hope this helps!

I just wanted to use modern bars and stems. It was also an experiment to see if it's possible to make modern stem and bar combos look right on a vintage frame. I'm pretty happy with the result.

Rob,
That Radac needs a pop of color on the brakes. Tektros sold under the Origin 8 name are analagous to the Shimano R451 brakeset; they work fine, they're cheap, and they've got some pizzaz.

The bike has more "life" in person.
The "before" pic. It just didn't look like steel to me:

I believe a friend here in Madison recently received an STI'd Ironman from you in yellow and white. I saw him putting it together and was more than a little jealous. I'll see what I can do to get him to come to the Dare with it.

I'll be there, and riding, but probably on the Paramount that I posted a few weeks back.

Thanks. It was thrown together with stuff from various parts bins that I've collected over the years. It seems to ride really well, at least around the block. First real ride will be on Friday.

Just picked up this bike a week ago, not super RETRO but built in 1996. I gave it a nice tune up, new cables, new chain, new stem, and new tape and honestly Ive love every mile I've logged so far. Tange Prestige tubing and Shimano Dura Ace, with Dura Ace Carbon wheels the 25mm Gran Prix's make this thing super smooth.

That, my friend, is one great plan, execution, and final product. The frame/group/wheels are an excellent synergy.
Welcome to the forum. Such a killer way to debut. Holy smokes. That thing says smooth all the way.

Here's my recently rebuilt Maruishi with parts cobbled together from an old Fuji Team Pro. Ultegra and Dura-Ace throughout. Had to replace the Dura brakes with long-reach Tektros. Needs a slightly longer chain. Also, the chainrings are too far from the frame for the front derailleur to shift smoothly. I'm hoping a new bottom bracket with a shorter spindle will help. I'm a bit intimidated to remove the current bb and see what kind of shape it's in in there.

I finally finished my second retro roadie build, my '87 Cannondale Black Lightning. I swapped the original steel fork for a carbon fork which did make rough patches in the road much more manageable. I swapped in a Vuelta Corsa Pro wheelset, Shimano 5800 drivetrain and 28mm Gatorskins for the terrible road conditions in some places 'round here. The saddle, stem, headset and seat post are the originals. A very fast, responsive ride. I haven't put on clipless pedals yet because this is now the wife's go to road bike and she hasn't made the switch to clipless yet. She took it out yesterday for a 15 mile shakedown ride and loved it.

2 more great builds.
I've declined restoring a Black Lightning for a friend, and this may make it even harder to say "no."
If a fairly recent Sugino crankset can be found for that Maruishi, that would be the icing on that cake.

Thanks! Curious what you would look for in a different Sugino crankset. Just something a bit more contemporary to match the rest of the componentry? Just trying to figure out what you meant by that, as I'm all ears for additional enhancements!
