I picked up this Panasonic MC2500, estimated vintage 1989.
It's a really LARGE bike, with a 24 inch seat tube. The frame is chromoly, fully lugged with horizantal dropouts. The components are Suntour index 18 speed with a Suntour Accushift 2000 rear derailer. It would make a good fixie frame for a really tall person.

Thanks to a good trade with Randyjawa, I have the final piece to have this bike released from the garage (whence the snow is gone in April or May):

Hi all. I have what I think is a '79 Panasonic Sport Deluxe. I may be off on the year, bought it used. The interesting thing is it's badged as Cro-Mo and weighs in at 19.7 lbs with the pedals and water bottle cage attached! I didn't want to believe my digital scales back then, so I rushed it down to our metallurgical lab and indeed it weighed 19.7 lbs exactly. It's lugged and still has the original Panasonic seat (worn) and post along with Araya rims. It's a 23" frame. Maybe there were some model names that magically received frames from another assembly line??

Since this thread popped back up, I figured I'd add a pic of my 1983 DX-4000 here.
Mine is mostly all Suntour, with Cyclone M II gear changers, the original Sugino Crankset with new chainrings, two fresh wheels and a pair of Michelin Dynamic tires. I also added Suntour Bar End shifters this time around. Its always been one of my favorite bikes. Best of all its a large frame model, at 26" its at the upper limit size wise of what fits me but it's been one of the most comfortable road bikes I've ever owned.

REELFISHIN'-- I'm diggin that 4000. my 2k is a 26" too. Only bike I've felt more comfortable on was a beat to heck Tange Lotus one of my students dug out of a dumpster. He's like 5'8 and won't sell it to me!

The DX-4000 is at the limit of my reach, I'm 6' 3" tall and this thing is pushing it as far as stand over height, but pedaling wise, it's perfect, I could even bump up the saddle a bit that way.
With long legs it's hard to fit well on any bike. I think the DX 4000 is one of my bikes that I'll never part with, I've had it too long and like it too much. I put my Super Grand Prix in that class too. I like that better than my Super Course or International.
I also have a Panasonic ATB from 1985 in the works, but no pics yet and its a work in progress for now.
The ATB will be nearly all original when done, other than maybe the tires.

So, anyway, buying it doesn't technically make you a member of the Panasonic bike club. But, it is a cool bike. Or at least the frame is cool.
And, it appears that the owner converted that nice multi speed bike into a single speed bike with a coaster brake on the rear wheel. It also appears that he hasn't removed all the braze-ons so it can be converted back to its proper setup.

1989 Panasonic DX-4000
Picked this up back in October for $150! Replaced all the cables, tires, tubes, chain, and bar tape. Also had to replace the FD because the original spring gave out over the winter while sitting around...
Otherwise, this bike is a thing of beauty--the frame is in almost pristine condition! The previous/original owner said his son rode it back in the day and was in storage for the past 18 years.
My original intention was to resell it here in Austin...but after riding it around campus and taking these pictures earlier today, I really don't want to let her go! I love the shape of the handlebars and the way it rides.
Enough with the talk, here's the goodies:

Why would I not? Takes up room in my small apt of 4 guys that already has 3 bikes in it...and I'm in college. Although, the money isn't too much of an issue right now...haha. I'll hold onto it for now or maybe list it high on CL, and see if anyone can pry it out of my hands with an unreasonably high offer =]

I seen another in this thread just like this.
It's all original down to the tires. Figured I'd post a pic before I go changin em.
The pedals were just temporary. Some Campy chorus or something.

A CL $50 Panasonic Touring bike frame from the 80s fitted with some upgraded components that I had "in my stock".
But alas, keeping the price down is not easy.
I found the lightly used Classic Elites on CL. Used saddle on Ebay, Crankset price was pretty good. original DT shifters in friction mode, old MTB RD for now.
It rides pretty nicely with the Mavics and Gatorskins.

I just read this entire thread and loved the pics of the beautiful Panasonics. I am the original owner of an 85 Sport LX. I know it wasnt a high end model, but when I was a kid I loved it like anything else. Back then I modified it with many upgrades including Diacompe aero brake levers, Shimano 105 pedals, Vetta seat, Suntour crank set, etc.
I am currently restoring it back to its late 80's glory and have most of an 80's Vintage 105 group set for it. After sitting for 23 years (first 16 years in a shed and the last 7 in my basement) took its toll. The shifters and brakes seized. The grease in the bottom bracket and head set bearings dried up and ofcourse the tires, tubes and bar tape were a mess.

Before the 80 mile ride up to Granville State Forest, MA. Sammich in the back, tools up front.
After I got there and regained some strength. Note the missing H20 bottle cage. That's a crappy thing to lose on a long solo ride!
66cm fits me just right.
