Got to love that Prelude. I would put some down tube shifters on it and a contrast color bar tape (maybe red), and it will be perfect! The Preludes I have picked up have both been battleship gray, I like your black color a lot better!

Yeah, I use lemon juice and a chore boy...works great. This one and the above suburban are my first schwinns, flip wise. That suburban still had air in the tires!! It should look great once I wash/wax and derustify...I may keep it!! I found some decals online I'm going to order up for it. It's missing one of the shifters so I may use some suntours from the parts box.

Hit the flea market a little late today, and found a decent flipper? 1988 Mangusta (Mongoose) 1000. I am not sure why it's got weinmann Schwinnesque wheels with a nutted
rear axle, but I can fix that rather quickly. Even more puzzling is the presta valves and nutted rear axle. First time I've ever seen that, ever! Aluminum composite frame, Sakae cranks, Suntour X3000, Weinmann 490 aero brakes with A'ME hoods.. It might have been a little high at $65, but I can make a profit I imagine.,,,,BD

Finished the cleanup on the Trek 330 picked up earlier this week. The rear hub flange was shattered, so I got to do my first wheel build since 1976!! Quite a gap between builds. This build was a lot easier as I had picked up a wheel truing stand (it was a toss in with a work stand I bought off C/L. I took the hub from another seriously bent wheel in the pile, and it worked great. Next stop its new home. I really wanted to put yellow or white bar tape on this bike, but I am down to some left overs to use up first.

Nice catch. +1 I would swap out that rear wheel with something better.

I agree red would make it really stand out, bottle cages and toe straps too maybe. DT shifters would be great. I bet one of has some clamp ons we can make him a good deal on. someone already put some nice brake levers on it.

If you are going to find bicycle wear in a thrift store, you either have to be extremely lucky, or frequent a lot of thrift stores. I go thrifting all of the time, mainly to feed ebay sales and designer clothing. I find that kind of stuff every time. I also very occasionally find bicycle clothing (usually in mens shirt section, have found it in childrens shirt section as well) along with bicycle shoes (in the shoe department) and bike racks and seats. My last bike rack pickup was a Saris Bones (pretty nice rack). And then rarely, perhaps 1/every couple of months, I will find a decent bicycle. But I go to thrift stores all of the time. I have also found deals on bicycle clothes at garage sales, along with some decent bikes.

But if you are looking for something your size (clothing or bikes) the odds get a lot worse.

Doohickie, what's your opinion of the ride on the Prelude? Pretty darned good, huh?

wrk101, I got back into wheel building a few months ago. My gap wasn't as long as yours, but it was quite long. Amazingly, the skill came right back. It felt really good in my hands.

Yep, the red would look nice!! I've also got those same levers on my 79 Trek.. They look completely era incorrect, but wow do they feel comfy, and pull cable very well. That trek stops on a dime, even
with Dia Compe G's.

This was a previous COTD, that was half of a pair of pre 80 Treks for $200. I sold the 412 for $200, so I figure I "almost" have a free Ishiwata Trek with campy on it:D. Can't beat that deal!
I have since installed a new ITM "Italmanubri" steel stem. It balances out the AGC levers....

I had one of these once. I was getting back into riding and had to replace my sports authority atb, so I got a Mangusta that was nearly 2 sizes too small. It was sufficient to get me interested in cycling as a lifestyle.

My first really big ride was the emerald neclace tour in cleveland, ohio. I think I flatted twice. The front would have been no problem, but I wasn't prepared for a rear flat. At the time I wasn't used to quick releases and didn't think about a wrench and apparently neither did the ride support. Since neither of us thought to carry a wrench, I was sol. So it was a sag ride the rest of the way in for me.

That was 'bout '94, got rid of it in a trade for some fixie wheels last year.

Anyway, not a bad bike, good score, looks like a quick flip.

Smokinapankake 02-06-10 08:30 PM

Not a bicycle, but went down to my LBS for some cables for a project, and sniffing around in a box of old cranks netted me this:

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...kake/4x6-1.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ankake/4x6.jpg

Its an adapter to add a 4th ring to the MTB crankset, using a freewheel cog. This one is 18t.
Think Mountain Tamer Quad or Avid Microdapter.
Best part is that the kid behind the counter had no idea what it was, so he threw it in gratis.
I love that shop; they always have something interesting.
Few months ago I walked out of there with a crown for a Tange Switchblade fork, 1 inch steerer x 9-1/2" long. Perfect for my Peugeot Canyon Express!

Now what to put it on?

I'm working on getting some downtube shifters for it. There's a local swap meet tomorrow, and if I don't snag anything there I'll get something online. At times I really like the bike, but right now the stem shifters are so bad it takes a lot of the pleasure out of it. I rode it for 25 miles yesterday and by the end of the ride I was starting to feel pretty comfortable with it. My only other drop bar bike right now is an '83 Raleigh Marathon that has a riser stem on it, so I haven't had a bike where I can really get into a racing tuck for quite a while. It's a little different from a balance/comfort standpoint. and like I said, the shifting is so horrendous that no gear change feels tight.

That said, it's a fairly light, responsive bike. I'm adjusting to the drops pretty well. Hopefully when I get proper shifters on there I'll decide it's a keeper (and probably sell the Marathon).

It was a beautiful day for a bike ride here today, with blue sky and sun everywhere.
I decided to take advantage of the sunlight to snap a few pics of 3 winter project bikes, that I hadn't posted previously....

Miyata 310 from 1981. Chromolloy frame, Suntour Vx.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...1981cranka.jpg

Schwinn World from 1984. Step-thru frame made by Giant. Actually a pretty good entry level bike for a gal.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...1981cranka.jpg

Trek 760 from 1983. An all Reynolds 531 bike. Full Superbe group except replacement aero levers. The tubular wheels were shot so I replaced them with Ukai's and mounted blue Michelins.)

What is the attachment on the front brake of the Miyata, a centering device?,,,BD

LOVE the 760! That right front brake shoe looks a little off the mark though?:D

Since you're going to change shifters anyway? Bar end pods from rivendell with indexed Shimano levers, would make adjusting to drops even easier.,,,,BD

Thanks BD, it was a mess when I got it but it came out OK.
You have a good eye for detail and a good eye for brake shoes too!

Thanks wrk101. I think it was finally hanging on that blue bell that made it worth all the effort.

Done! And I got them super-cheap from a guy in my bike club. Now I can do the full cleanup and buildup.

Bikedued 02-07-10 07:49 PM

Sweet! Get some red bike ribbon, or white... Finding that hard slippery original stuff, a distant third, hehe.,,,,BD

Doohickie 02-07-10 11:08 PM

I'm thinking maybe blue.

shopgirl 02-07-10 11:49 PM

Auchencrow-

My first road bike was a Schwinn World exactly like that one. i rode it for two years during college, but sold it before I graduated and moved away. I thought my legs were going to fall off the first time I rode it to class, because the ride to campus was almost ALL uphill, and I remember that it rode like a tank.

My second road bike after I sold the Schwinn, coincidentally, is a Gitane that I first rebuilt to look strikingly like that Miyata 310. Just thought I'd share.

Nice! You keep on picking up bikes in my size! If you lived closer I would be tempted to try to trade with you.
