Fate shined on me today. I drove into work today, and noticed a set of wheels sitting by the dumpster. I walked over and thought "wow are those poor things ever filthy!" I got closer still, and noticed one had a tire, and one didn't. The one that didn't was a tubular rim. I picked them both up, and it just then hit me that they were a matching set! The hubs are Campy Record, and the rims dark anodized Mavic tubulars. They're both 36 spoke with odd lacing. The front is a cross one, and the rear is cross two. They will definitely be going on a bike I don't ride much, since I don't want to replace a tire every time I get a puncture. I want to use skinwalls, so if there are anmy out there with flat protection please let me know.:D,,,,BD

[Edit]
Picked up another mtb tonight, a Gary Fisher Advance. The best I could determine is it's a 1991, with Shimano 400LX. It's a 19" frame of Japanese 4130 Cr-Mb Gary Fisher SuperSize tubing (Tange MTB) ;). And has the Fisher Evolution front end. It was in pretty sad condition, but the frame has only a dozen scratches to its purple paint that could use some touch up, and all tubes are straight and dent-free. The only reason I bought it was it's a pre-Trek Gary Fisher, heard these originals are desirable. (apparently 1990 and later are the authentic G-F, oh well) It's faded, perhaps a repaint is in its future. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7014/6...4533d1fb_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7032/6...f5b1f4ea_b.jpg |
1989 Club Fuji
I picked up this used and abused Fuji about 5 years ago when I had no knowledge of bikes. I figured that Fuji was an expensive bike and that my dad might like it so I picked it up for a whopping $25 which just so happened to be all I had in my wallet at the time. I loaded it up in the trunk of my car and brought it home, but unfortunately for my dad it was way too small for him. It turns out though that it is the perfect size for me, So now 5 years later, my dad and I are going to fix it up so I can ride it in some recreational rides and possibly some amateur races around my college. The frame is straight and there are no dents in it, but the paint could use some touch-ups. It's currently in storage at my grandma's so this project will have to wait until the springtime.

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...d/DSCN2510.jpg I have a 84 Fuji Club in new condition with 5 miles on the bike (when I bought it), except for some paint chips from laying around since 88. I bought mine for $100 last year. I saw a 85 Club at a LBS for $650 and it sold about 2 months later for close to that price! Mine is actually in better condition then the one that sold, not sure why someone was willing to spend $600 plus for the bike though because personally I don't think it's worth that much. Don't get me wrong, I like my bike, it's also the lightest steel lugged bike in my small collection coming in at 20.8 pounds, and it rides great in the terms of comfort and function, but I can't see it being worth $600. I've put about 200 miles on the Club this year. My favorite bikes are the two Miyatas though, their a 87 Team and a 88 712. Even though they weigh from 1/4 of a pound to a pound more then the Fuji, their very stiff and accelerate like a Banshee. |
Fuji hated Shimano? That's news to me? For a Company that had a model of bike in the 70's called The Ace, that was equipped with Dura Ace?
You have a 20.8 pound Club Fuji? Is it a single speed? My 84 Club weighed 23 and change the last time I weighed it? It has upgraded lighter derailleurs(Cyclone M-II) and lighter wheels than original.,,,,BD |
Also that club fuji looks to have bioopace chainrings on it...

I'm going to keep the ARX on the bike till they fail then replace with Cyclone myself. The spec sheet shows 23 pound weights, but I checked my with a scale and tested the scale for accuracy by putting known weights from barbells on the scare and it came out at 20.8 without water bottles or seat bag. The reliability issues with ARX may not be real or may be real, I say that because I have a bike with Suntour Superbe Tech system and they claimed for years that that derailleur was a major problem, really? After 150,000 miles on that system I haven't had one issue with it!! I wonder when the derailleur will start having problems? Like an idiot because of claimed problems I bought a spare Tech rear about a year after I bought the original stuff thinking I may need it, I still have it unopened in it's original box waiting to be used. I love the Tech, it shifts very fast and positive even under load which was very nice to have when I rode the mountains of California. |
The loss of Suntour was a tradgedy for the cycling community.

rekmeyata,
i seriously doubt you've put 150,000 on your "sun tour superb tech system" |
Yea My Club Fuji has all Shimano parts. Here are the scans of my model from Classic Fuji. I also dated the components a while back which put it in late 1988, but It was sold for the 1989 Year. There was no Club Fuji in the 1988 Catalog. Also all of the other bikes on the specs page have Shimano Parts. I did look through all of the other catalogs though and didn't notice any Shimano parts in the 1977-1986 Fuji catalogs unless I missed some somewhere.

I have aRX on my Super Course. Seems to shift okay, but I will be slapping a Cyclone M-II on there when I get my new freewheel.

The beauty of it is, I got the Cyclone as an add-in to another deal for a frame I never built up.
|
Took this Panasonic MTB in as partial trade on a MTB today. The good: Tange Infinity frame. The not so hot: U brake (rear), Suntour XCM components. We'll have to see how it cleans up.
Wow, that saddle is way out of place. Will have to see if it has any value, as it has to come off this bike (along with the chrome steel seat post, ugh). Famous last words: "no more MTBs." Here I go again... http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7028/6...6c039378_b.jpg |

Well then I seriously know you're wrong. Those components are on a 84 Trek I bought new as a frame and fork, I had the Suntour Superbe line put on the bike. I was racing back when I built this bike up in Cat 3 races and thus trained and raced on it year round in California. I averaged about 15,000 miles a year on that bike for the first 4 years, those first 4 years alone comes to around 60k. After racing I averaged 6,000 miles a year for the next 14 years which means another 84k. Then for the next 7 years I averaged 3,500 miles due to moving to Indiana and no longer ride it year round. This last year I retired the bike till I can get it painted. So in reality I've gone over 150,000 miles on the bike, but I always just say 150,000 and forget the rest.

is this characteristic of most drive trains? this is the first time I've heard of that kind of mileage being put on the same system.
There were some drive trains made back then that weren't that good like lower end components from all the manufactures, Simplex had durability issues, even mid end Campy had problems. But back then the best stuff as far as reliability was coming out of Japan, and Suntour over engineered a lot of their products. But what's weird about my particular Suntour Superbe Tech stuff is that supposedly they had problems, read this about the Tech: http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/...284800%29.html But like I said so far it's been a dream derailleur, if the unit goes bad after it comes out of rehab I won't be upset because it lasted a long time and won races on it...plus I have a new spare. Also that site I gave mentions problems similar to the MounTech, guess what? Yup, I have one of those on a 85 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe I'm going to use for heavy touring when I retire. I bought it last winter in mint condition with 250 miles on it, since then I put on about 1,200 miles including some light weekend touring, and so far that derailleur is also a dream, it shifts the wide range gears quickly and with ease. I do know that with both derailleurs I have to keep them clean even though supposedly they were designed to take dirt, but I keep all my stuff clean so there's no problem there. Also read this: http://forums.roadbikereview.com/gen...ike-81555.html And this: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Story?id=2458325&page=1 |
