I made a pretty good save today, my neighbor was having a tag sale and this cool old bike was just laying on the side of the yard by the road. I asked how much she wanted and she couldn't name a price. Eventually she asked $10 for it, I gave her $20. She said if it didn't get sold, it was going out for free. An hour after I nabbed it, a pickup showed up and the guy grabbed every piece of metal there and tossed it in the back - clearly headed to the scrap yard. I don't yet know what my plans are for the bike, but I've already stripped it down completely and started cleaning up all the chrome.
She said it had been in the attic of the garage since they bought the house, my father-in-law knows the old owners and is pretty sure he knows exactly whose bike it is, which is neat - could be cool to reunite them when I'm done with it. It's actually in very good shape, only a few minor rust spots here and there, the chrome isn't even all that pitted. I don't yet know what year the bike is, I haven't done any searching yet. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...er/DayOne1.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...er/DayOne2.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...er/DayOne6.jpg |
It looks like it's a 1960s AMF badged for Western Flyer.
|
that would be fun to reunite the bike with the owner!
make sure to tell us about it. would be fun to park it in fron tof his door, hid with the vidcamera and ring the bell and see what happens when he sees it. |

1987-88 Centurion LeMans, 45cm with 650c wheels, Tange butted tube set. I caught this a year ago for my little sister and also found a spare set of wheels that are 650c Mavics laced to Shimano 600 Tricolour hubs that appear to be un-ridden. Parts on the bike are a mix of Exage Sport (crank, brakes, levers), Shimano 105 (rear d, pedals) and is fitted with Shimano 600 Trcolour hubs laced to Araya 650c wheels. Rear Gatorskin is new and bike comes with spare tubes and has a new Terry saddle. My little sister (and she is little) never used the bike and told me she wanted to sell it... this is now my 12 year old daughter's new whip. Her old whip wasn't too shabby either... I am almost tempted to make it a fixed gear so she can ride it at the track but retain the parts so I can restore it back to it's geared version as it is not a common bike and is nearly mint. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...iracer3xt1.JPG I converted the Norco / Terry to a triple to expand the gearing for climbing... crank was a triple that had been fitted with a double so all I had to do was change the spindle, add the granny, and replace the Light Action rear d with an XT. |
From this...

I have been busier than two flies on a pig's butt this Spring. Keeping up with the demands of Bicycles for Humanity, the workload created by my website and the need to sell this and that to help make ends meet uses up most of my day, every day. Anyway, I have not had time to take pictures of all of the bikes and parts that have come my way recently. However, every once in a while, something that catches my interest comes along.

A Very Specialized week last week
I was able to bring home the three Specialized bicycles that I picked up last week, the first is a 1985 Stumpjumper Sport which except for the tires, seat & grips was all original with Shimano XT Deer head components. It has two problems, one the SR Laprade seatpost was down to far and endured some time in the weather & is now stuck tighter then anything I have encountered so far to date. Two all the original decals were removed with the exception of the two small fork decals but there a little faded.
I didn't get pics of the Stumpy before I ripped it apart and it has been upside down in my vise for a week soaking in PB Blaster, I have tried heat, tapping it down and twisting it to no avail, next I am going to try some drain cleaner ( Lye) and see if that works ( anything to avoid cutting it). The next two bikes are Specialized Rockhoppers ( Haven't time to date these two yet) one early model and a later all aluminum model. The early model is missing the original back wheel, RD , front brake lever ( I have the levers in my bin though) and I think the stem and handle bars aren't correct, once I date it I would like to find the original parts for it as this along with the Stumpjumper are keepers as they are my size. I also got pics of a few more bikes I picked up that I will post after this. Glenn Stumpy as she sits now, http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes004.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes005.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes008.jpg Rockhoppers as found, http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes014.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes015.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes019.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes016.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes022.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes023.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...edBikes026.jpg |
Here are the pics of a few more bikes I picked up, a old Miami Sun adult three wheeler with Skyway mags new in the box, a Cignal Kokomo hybrid that I made into a cruiser in order to offer it in trade to a neighbor for a very nice MTB someone gave him that he wanted me to try and make a cruiser out of it ( it was a lot easier this way).
The Cignal wasn't anything special but for some reason I just liked the way it looked ( it reminded me of a mens light weight three speed), it had 35's on it originally and I put on a set of 40's which just fit with the fenders on it, if I remove the fenders I think there would be enough room for a 29er tire in the frame if you could get it between the brakes. If my neighbor doesn't want it I will ride it myself upgrading it even more as I really like the way it rides and handles. The other thing I got last week although not a bicycle I really like, a early 1984 Harley Davidson 1000 Sportster ( last of the iron heads ) that one of my best friends gave me so I have something to ride with him on when he is here with his Chopper ( talk about a real friend), it needs a little work but mostly cosmetic as it runs real good. The last pic is of my temporary bicycle shelter I built for the summer to keep the better bikes out of the weather and out of my shop in, the blue MTB up front is what I want to trade the Cignal for, it's all aluminum with Deore LX components and Hydro rim brakes. silvercreek - That is sweet beyond words.
My catch of the day happened when I was strolling through the LBS and checking sales and came up 2 sets of original Avocet Cross tyres in 26 by 1.25 in beautiful supple condition... for $20.00 each. My Cascade now has some new shoes and am going to go out and do a little more test riding and wear the fuzzies off them. :D |

:D I was just about to pull the trigger on the re-introduced Avocet Cross tyres until I found these which are in new condition and the new Avocet Cross only comes in black. The roll out and ride on these tyres at 90 psi is astounding... am looking forward to loading the bike up and heading out with these under me. |

Let me know what the originals look like. I have an old 'golf club' stem and bars that I think are from an early Specialized and a few other old bits as well. I like the old Stumpy's but the only one I'm keeping original is an '81 that I'm probably going to trade to a fellow addict at the co-op.

Scored a free Yakima rack...
http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/rando...ntrayakima.JPG But the car it was attached to cost me a dollar. :D http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/rando...993sentra1.JPG Got it from my friend who had too many vehicles and owed me a couple of favours... 200,000 km on the odometer (my last Sentra ran 1,300,000 km) with new tyres, new stereo, was very well maintained, it doesn't leak a drop of anything, and all I needed to do was drop in a new battery. The trunk is spacious enough that I will probably keep my Raleigh 20 in there as a "spare" and the only reason I got a car was because we are taking a month long family trip to Oregon and because it will be handy for shuttling bikes and projects to and from the frame shop which is a 100km return trip. |
1995 GIANT KRONOS 58cm
It was town-wide clean-up day and everyone puts their junk to the curb. At daylight on Saturday the kids zoom all over town raiding the piles for goodies and scrap metal to sell. The 12-year-old neighbor kid grabbed three bikes and brought them to me. One was a 1969 Schwinn 3-speed BREEZE but it has been outside a long time. I think only the rear hub is a good parts unit, otherwise the bike is rusty. One bike is an old ROSS woman's coaster brake lightweight with a Bendix rear hub that freewheels in both directions. ( a project for another day in the future )
But he also wheels-in this Giant Kronos. He says; "Is this some ten speed racing bike?" Well, it is amazing! This bike is pretty much new. Can't have very many miles. It was missing the seat and post, has obviously been stored indoors, covered in dust but not rusty. It is Shimano RSX equipped. So, upon initial inspection it is discovered that the right Shimano RSX brifter is broken internally. (Will up-shift but wont return) I fiddled with it for a while and gave up. I had a nice set of alloy stem shifters from a 1980s Schwinn World Traveler and some nice Dia-Comp brake levers with hoods from the same parts bike. So, switched everything over and even re-used the original Giant bar wrap. Nice Continental tires, true wheels. I think a really nice score for FREE! I had an alloy seat post and Avocet seat from another parts bike. My research tells me that it was $650.00 when new in 1995 Right now, I have a 1980 Schwinn 24" Sprint (Varsity) set-up for this kid and he really likes to go out road biking with me, but like all kids he also likes money in his pocket. He wants to flip it on Craig's list for fast cash and it is true that at this time the boy is too small for this 58cm bike but he is growing like a weed. His Mom and I both are trying to convince him to let it sit in my building until he grows into it (probably next year) but we will see. When he saw it all fixed-up and I told him that it wasn't some WalMart China bike, his eyes glossed over with the thoughts of being instantaneously super-rich... :) So, three hours of time and no money spent, and this is what "we" have. I just got back from our Wed flea market, I scored a Vitus 979 frame, with Full Shimano 600 Friction six speed. Mavic Ma-40 rims. Looks like a garage queen rarely ridden Verrrryyy light. And appears to have no problem with tube seperation. Beautiful Red anodized color. I had to pay, $200.00 but I almost ran to the atm.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=259335http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=259335http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=259335

Drove half the day today to get this one. This bike sat on C/L for several days, seller even repopped it back to the top of the list. Not sure why no one in the myriad of towns I drove through to get this bike did not snag it. Maybe I am confused on value. DA STI working fine. Components a mix of DA and tricolor 600. Its even my size.

Fuji Touring IV
The previous owner was prepared to throw this Fuji into the trash when I made a cash other. I didn't feel right not paying something. I may an offer and he readily accepted. I've been searching for a Fuji Touring bike without success. When I saw the bike, I tried to contain my excitement. This was a great day!
The bike is dirty but will clean up nicely. The rear derailleur is likely broke, but it can be easily replaced. http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV001.jpg http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV007.jpg http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV008.jpg http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV009.jpg http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV010.jpg http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...uringIV012.jpg |
