I've been to garage sales in many parts of the US. The best I have seen continue to be in the midwest. On bikes, I've seen bikes up to a full Dura Ace equipped Litespeed at a garage sale in the midwest. Don't see that high up at garage sales here, but I have gotten some nice ones.

This is how wacked our town is. People go to churches begging for free clothes for their kids, then take those clothes and sell them in garage sales!

This part of the midwest I see mostly Walmart type of bikes in garage sales, and a huge percentage of little kids bikes. Some people get brand new toys and bikes from churches for Christmas, then in the spring they sell them mostly on CL then what doesn't sell they sell in garage sales. Then the Goodwill stores and Salvation Army stores in town have contacts with a couple of different guys, and when decent bikes come in they call them without ever putting them out on the floor, and they come and buy the bikes and resell them later on CL.

This town is sort of large with garage sales scattered here and there, it's impossible to hit the right one early enough because you don't know which is the right one to hit first. I'm sure this is true with most larger cities.

I picked up this Bottecchia today for a song. It looks rough, I know. I plan to overhaul everything and get it looking as spiffy as possible.

It has a chrome fork and a chrome chain stay and internal top tube cable routing, all of which makes me think it's a Chromor/Athena that someone put the chrome fork from an SL/Chorus on.

I had one of the SL ADR team models a couple years ago that rode great but was too big, so I traded it to another BFer. Really happy I found another Bott in my size with almost all the parts in functioning condition.

Let me know what you think:

This one of the most horrible things I have seen, What a fine bike that was rapidly becoming a pile of ****. Thanks for rescuing this from its unappreciative owners.

A lot of what I see as well, my local Goodwill never gets any bikes out on the floor. And now I hear they won't deal in toys anymore either. The garage sales are very iffy after about this time of the year. We had a great police auction, but they now send all the bikes to Africa. Yet they still turn up from time to time.

I was in a local chain thrift store and was amazed to see an adult bike for sale. for less than $20 even. It looked like it needed work but I was still really surprised. never see anything buts kids bikes at goodwill/salvation army

We could use a local chain thrift store around here, just to keep balance in the universe. Might serve to keep the others more in line.

That's certainly the case in Spokane. The nastier ones seem to start there, the cleaner ones go for up to $150! Goofy....

Nice Peugeot. That French paint sure holds up better than the 80s Italian stuff.

Started tearing down and cleaning up the 73? Cactus Flower today. This bike is coming apart perfectly. I think its never been apart. Anyone know where I can find the fenders and chain guard stickers ' aftermarket?. I'll post pics of the tear down soon. BTW' I found her at a thrift store for $8.00. Here's what she looks like. http://poppysports.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/1978_huffy_cactus_flower_banana_seat_girls_bike_50_maple_hts_14291527.jpg"

Being that it was made of aluminum I wouldn't pay anything for it due to possible high mileage and fatigue, but I'll say you paid $125 max.

anixi 06-21-13 08:42 PM

^Nope, paid $50. I'm surprised you have that much disdain...

rekmeyata 06-21-13 09:16 PM

The 89 to 90 models, which is the one you have because it's black with either teal decals or light blue can't tell on my monitor which decal color it is, those had some issues with the bonding especially the 89. So there are some warning signs the bonded frame will tell you when it's about to give up, quite simply it will begin to creak. Also check now and keep checking every 3 months for cracks where holes were drilled into the frame for bottle cage mounts etc. But once the frame is creaking you're living on borrowed time before it will fail. Those Trek 1100 also used smaller diameter tubing then say Cannondales or Kliens, and the Trek was quite flexy which put more stress on the bonded joints and on the aluminum tubing.

If that bike has very low miles on it, it could last 40,000 to 50,000 miles, which is a long time if you're putting in 5,000 miles a year on the bike. So if you paid $50 and it has very low miles you got a good deal.

anixi 06-21-13 09:44 PM

Thanks for the details, thought it was a no-brainer of a snag. I'll check the frame once it's been dismantled...

Robofunc 06-22-13 02:54 PM

Even if the frame is near it's end, you still paid $50 for a set of components. Not too bad.

fiataccompli 06-22-13 05:08 PM

Don't know if this was exactly a save from the dump, but I adopted this '90s Olmo recently. For me it will be a parts bike as the frame is too large for me, but pretty much everything attached to it has an intended use. It's Columbus Gara...anyone have any experience? Despite the goofy bar setup, it's a very nice riding bike.
