Ok on further inspection of what i thought said stingray, it appears the bike is a Skyway.

It is a Shimano hub. The 333 was their early stuff.

Picked up a Le Tour Tourist at Goodwill for 5 bones today. Sorry, I only have a low quality webcam for pics:

I'm not sure if it's an 81 or 82, but it's all standard except the saddle. It also has drop bars unlike the stock tourist, but I was reading somewhere that some shops reconfigured the le tour tourist model back to the le tour drops because of poor sales.

Anyway, I'm happy. My area has a terrible used market, and I've been looking for a working old road bike for the better part of the year. It pretty much fits me perfect, and pretty much all the parts are fixable. I'm not sure whether I should relace the hubs with alloy rims, or just buy new wheels all together?

Nice townie... those 333 hubs work well but if it ever dies you probably won't be able to fix it.

The 3.3.3. hubs were made by Shimano and are quite sturdy.

I had to make a run to the county transfer station the other day as a consequence of our moving. Lo and behold, what do I see in the big blue bin, with golf clubs laced through its spokes, but this:

Fully intact and apparently original. A Columbia "500" ten-speed. I know it's nothing legendary, but still-it's actually my size, and it'll be a great town cruiser.

There have been some great "tourist" style bikes found lately. The Skyway and Columbia are awesome bikes. I'll be turning the '73 Schwinn Varsity I picked up a couple weeks ago into a tourist with upright handlebars.... as soon as I can find some.

Dry spell finally broke.
Paid a little more then I would have liked for a set of black 700 Araya rims during the week trying to move forward on the his and hers single speeds I and building for my wife and I. I guess that was the catalyst to get me finding some really good deals.

I'm riding the Tour de Cure on the 17th and needed to get some training time in. We are expecting some storms today so got out the door early. Went and made a big loop of my area. Ended up being a crafts fair in Marietta so I walked my bike around that enjoyed it. As I got closer to my house I started checking out yard sales and hit pay dirt.

Hit most of the houses in a neighborhood wide garage sale and people were starting to pack it in with dark skys showing. Second to last house they have a single bike hitch mount carrier. Compact enough I could leave it on and my wife could use it as a step to load stuff in the 4Runner. Last house they had a roller trainer and ended up talking to the guy for about 15 minutes. He doesn't bike much after taking up hiking (and with the crappy drivers around here I understand). Filled him in about the linear park they just broke ground on and he can't wait to have that finish up and give him a close place so he can start riding again. He told me he would hold the trainer till I could get home and get my truck.

So I finished my ride getting it 30. grabbed the truck hit the ATM and went after the trainer. He let me have it for $5 and also let me have a new in the box Forte Contour women's saddle for and addition $5. Went two doors up after the rack and offered then $10 and they accepted. :thumb:

On the way back I hit the local Thrift where I have made most of my great scores. I always loop the drop off area to see what just was dropped off and I spy a 1988 360 Trek with a rusty chain.
Go in and the manager was out. Shopped for 30 minutes till he got back. asked if he would be kind enough to price it for me and he did so $10.48 out the door and right onto the new rack for the ride home. :p

Need a chain and tires but they they hold air. Been sitting in the weather but really not for a real long time. Seat post and stem are not stuck. 4130 CroMo double butted frame, Suntour 4050 accushift derailleurs, Diacompe 5000 brakes. The free hub is crusty but that set of wheels for the singles I picked up has a good freehub that is the same model if this one doesn't clean up. Wheels are Weinmann rims laced to Mallard hubs and true as if they were new! I may put the Araya rims on the 360 and keep these rims. Few chips in the paint but no dents. It will clean up very nice. Only bummer is it is a 21 inch so it will get the flip.

Update of the High Sierra. The rear derailleur was shot, wobbling at the mounting bolt, sigh. Saddle was shot too, and was a Viscount anyway. I recently put a different saddle on my 990, so the Vetta from that went on. This morning at the flea market I made a decent find just as I was leaving. Hanging from a home made rack were two tires. I tried not to get excited as I made a beeline for them. I get there, and it's a matching set of Continental Goliath semi slicks with brown sidewalls, must be from a few years back, as those are blackwall now I believe? They were in PERFECT condition, and had spent very little time on a bike. Still has the center line on the tread, and the sidewalls are fine. A nice find, as I am ALWAYS tire poor. I hit up the swap at the LBS before taking boxes to New Jersey this morning. Scored a set of 700c Weinmann concave clinchers (the narrow ones), laced to Campagnolo Record high flange hubs with flat skewers, and a 6 speed SunTour Winner freewheel - all in really nice shape (except for dull spokes) after a quick clean-up. $50.00.

The swap was still on when I got back, and since I rushed on my way out, I stopped back again. One of the guys at the LBS said he'd noticed I'd bought one Record wheelset and asked if I'd seen the other. It was still there - another set of High Flange with flat skewers, laced to 27" Ambrosia clinchers, with a huge honkin' SunTour perfect freewheel 14-17-20-24-28-32. Again, in remarkably good shape - and with tubes and tires that might still be usable. These were quite the rip-off at $40.00. :p :D I also found a set of ttt Criterium bars with a single groove attached to a ttt black anodized 110mm stem. Combined cost of this arrangement - $10.00.

Now I don't feel so bad about not being able to get to T-Town next Saturday.

The first one is going to get cleaned up and put on the block. I'm thinking on the 2nd. It's a decent set of alloy 27's that might work well on the Hetchin's.

A month or so ago, a guy came into our store for something. He left, but then returned in a couple of minutes wanting a jump-start. Having 10+ years of professional auto tech experience, I went out and checked it out. GM product. Crank-no start. #1 Fuel Pump. #2 Ignition Module #3 Computer. With a GM fuel pump, you can usually "bump" the key a few times, and it'll knock the brushes in the pump motor back into position so it will work again, for a while. That's what I did, and that's what it was. I let him take my extra set of jumper cables with him, and wished him well.

Today he came back to the store. Gave me back my jumper cables (got the fuel pump replaced), AND brought me a somewhat shiny Schwinn Traveler. Said he wanted the saddle, and I could have the rest. I *think* it's a 1986. Shimano Light Action rear derailleur with stem shifters, cheap Shimano front derailleur, Dia Compe brakes and levers, lugged, 4130 Cro-Mo frame.... Sorry for the lack of pictures, but it's kinda dark outside, and the bike is in the garage. I'll post some pics once I've cleaned it up a bit more.

If the Hetchins hasn't got good alloy wheels yet, go for it. Love those Suntour Perfect freewheels:). Nothing like an upgrade! Keep me in mind if you decide differently. Got to pass on the 700c s - I guess I could scrap my Record sidepulls for Tektro long reaches (might even give somewhat improved braking) but I somehow can't get myself to do it. I did spring for a pair of Shimano aero levers to replace the Record levers ( nice increasse in leverage and don't miss the cable housings) , so ... who knows?

1971 3-speed schwinn racer ,,95% original,has a oddball front wheel and tire,how crazy is this?.the guy put it out first at 7:00 at his yard sale, me and my wife did our daily walk at 1;00 and spotted this bike,he said about 4 or 5 people looked but no takers,, he thought the $3.00 was to high,,!!!,i said oh no it's not !!! SOLD!!!

I am a fan of old bikes and a fan of Schwinns, but I regret to inform you that you have acquired one BUTT UGLY bike. Still, for $3, you can't go wrong. Have fun with it! Looks like a nice project.

Are you referring to my Bianchi? And if so, what is a Pini?

I think that is what I said... :)

But fixing them requires arcane knowledge and unobtainable parts...it is nice that they seem to hold up so well.
