I’m in my home town for a high school class reunion and, as usual, cruised the thrift stores and pawn shops for bikes. I’ve found some fun projects in this and other small towns that way. This time I found this 2001 Trek 6500 in a pawn shop for $70. The tires and tubes have been replaced but the rest of it looks original. The 3X9 Deore group set is in great shape, and the frame has mounts for disk calipers. It looks to me like the 6700 from that year used the same frame and had an option for disk brakes.
I cleaned it up, adjusted the derailleurs, lubed the chain, aired up the tires, and went for a ride on the multi-use path that runs behind our RV park. There are some paint dings that I think I can touch up and I’m going to rebuild the fork. It’s otherwise all in such good shape that I’m going to leave it stock.

Cool little ride. Mini Bullmoose? edit: or are they full size, cut narrow? never seen those. How wide are they?

Many of those parts are not original. I know, I bought 2 1986 Trofeos (and I have one in my basement). It should have Campy Super Record derailleurs, an Ofmega crank/BB, and Modolo Equipe brakes. I’m “restoring” the bike I bought when I was in college for L’Eroica in Chianti.

The FD and maybe the wheels are original, too. I don’t have the original fork (due to an accident). I wish I had yours! Looks like the same size as mine (59cm).

This one was probably going to the thrift store if I hadn't grabbed it. The patina is fairly serious, but the tubes are undamaged. I've not yet decided how I will build it back up.

Bikes: TRIMMED DOWN THE HERD
Was driving home from doggie playtime and spotted this hanging at a neighborhood garage sale. Looked my size so had to check it out. Great condition and got it for $10. No Fear brand too. Will definitely be worn.

Not vintage, but it has “retro” in the name. I won this bike at an event called pedal for prizes in Old Brooklyn Cleveland. It’s a great event, been to it many times. This year was really well attended and the whole family had a good time. My 12 year old

daughter pedaled 10 miles on her own power, so I was proud of her effort.

Update on this beater no one (Bike shop, Goodwill, Neighbors, Bikeforum "pay it forward", Craigslist "Free") wanted, including me. Saved from my dump!
So, I broke down another Peugeot ATB, which provided some parts to make this one whole. Dug through the garage and found 2 functional (non-matching) tires and used tubes to replace the ones rotting off this bike. Added some missing brake parts (cable attachment bolt & straddle cable) to front brake. Adjusted straddle cables lengths and cable tension, brakes working. Took a test ride, seat moved (post and angle) shifters wouldn't get to all cogs front or back. Adjusted limit screws, got both shifters working (kind of amazing how well these low end shifter work). Went back through photos to confirm this seatpost came with bike, as bought, confirmed, but seatpost is slipping (so wrong post). Seatpost clamp is fully closed and still slipping, added "beer can shim" now stays snug.
So now it is a functional bike, it will be back on the road and have another life.

Bike nobody wants - last chance before the scrap pile - Free, Free, Free
Local pick-up only - San Pedro, CA
I will give this a few days and when no one claims it, I will hand it to the scrap truck Edit: Hyperbole - I was trying to get a reaction, I was hoping for "I'll save it" but got "how dare you!", fair enough
never thrown away so much as a rusty bolt! Sorry to create the unnecessary concern
Special Steel L1011 - 22" frame US Express - missing bolt on front brake, everything else is there.

IF it comes to that I would cut the cables and keep the stem and bars, levers, shifters, they are a bit cool and unique.
I would keep the wheels too if they are ok like they seem.
Too bad it is a claw RDO, apparently a BSO trait too far.
And its a big one, can be good or bad.

Done OK lately. First I noticed pedals in the take-off box. Pulled them out and asked "do you really think anyone will want these?" "No. But they'd look good with chrome toe cages."
"That's me. I have a pair." So they came home. MLS New AR-2. Note the dust caps that I've removed. It looks like no one on the web knows how to remove them. The 4 pin wrench holes are an affectation, no function at all. You must pry the plastic caps out, not threaded. Also almost no grease inside though very clean otherwise. I'll rebuild them next winter.

Then I saw this bike in the boneyard pile. I looked closer and found a lugged Trek 930. So I stuffed it into the car, thinking I'd find someone to give it to. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a 1993 930, last of the lugged Trek mtn bikes. And it's the same size as my 1995 Trek 850. But this frame is intriguing. Still thinking but I have visions of keeping it and moving either it or the 850 to Charlotte and giving my 820 to my grand daughter. She is ready for 26" wheels and trigger shifters.
And that seat post still has 4.5" in the frame, well above the min line. This 18" frame gives me a comfortable reach too. I've done MANY miles on my 850. It suits me.

I've just wiped off the dirt and cobwebs and torn the rotten saddle cover off. Oh, and sluiced out the shifters with light oil so they do work just fine now. Some people give up too easily.

Today a friend of mine wanted me pick up a bike he had found on marketplace.
It turned out to be a british raleigh record ace. I had one in the past but that frame was too small for me, this one fit me perfectly. after a bit of persuading my friend let me have it.
payed 140 usd for this one.
