Bikes: See Signature.

My issue with the adapter is that i want to bring the bars level with saddle and keep my stem parallel to the top tube. Using these adapters leaves a 1" cylinder sticking up between the stem and the headset that just looks bad.

I've been tempted to throw a shim on this section and toss on some spacers for cosmetics.

Bikes: yes

I use a Deda Elementi Murex quill stem. Rather hard to come by now -- discontinued recently, I believe. I got mine at Yellow Jersey.

The bummer about a threadless stem on a threaded fork is that you're looking at both a headset locknut and steerer clamp bolts... the ugly bits of each system. If, as the thread title suggests, it was possible to do the opposite, you could have a cleaner-looking setup than either system.

IMO you should learn to appreciate the aesthetics of a 90 degree stem.

Why not join your bars and steerer with the shortest possible extension, especially if that puts the bars exactly where you want them with no spacers?

Using the least amount of material to do the job has to look better in my book.

Google is by far the worst search engine, mostly because all online sites use google adsense and the high reputable franchise corporations come on their tops searches.
I preffer yahoo anytime. throws me sites that are of small businesses and not major ones where you probably wont will even find what your really looking for then when looking at small ones

Ive done so too with the spacer situation and using a who knows what brand of stem that is adjustable to change the degree in angle for ones comfort on my old bike which i wish i had a picture of the work i did on it before selling it.
