I'd make a guess but my rep regarding dating Campy stuff is probably shot
I'll bet that seat post is going to be fun to remove. I'm with the don't "restore" crowd. Carefully clean, lube and enjoy. Sweet machine.

Holes in the lugs is a way of delineating the age for SC's but I have never seen a Mod. B with holes. When did they stop building the Mod. B? I think that this bike CAN be dated from the components on it. Is there a year on the rear derailleur?

You may be right about model B lugs. However, I think that seat binder bolt was in use only through the 1960s. I cannot recall a 1970s Model B, but I cannot recall many useful things either.

Awaiting posts from wiser folk...

I just perused the Cinellis on Wool Jersey Gallery and the older style bolt is on bikes dated up to about 1973.

Live & learn. Thanks!

Did you see any Model Bs from after 1968?

No I didn't, now I am really curious about this as I never thought before about when they stopped building it.

Nice Cinelli. Do you have other bikes?

The Cinelli registry has Model Bs from the early 70s although I never have seen one personally. I have also never seeen a B with holes in the lugs, FWIW. I think the date stamp on the RD is your best guess for the age of the bike.

My guess is that this bike was not originally sold in the US. Is this true? If originally sold outside of the US, my guess would be about 1972-73.

I contacted Angel from the Cinelli Only Blog and he doesn't recall seeing Mod. B with lug holes.

Did he know when they went out of production?

This date gets tossed around a lot. Is it a "slam dunk" at this point, or a "best guess?" Was there any overlap in hole/no-hole frames?

It seems the "holes in lugs" don't apply to Mod. B's at all.

I'm still interested in knowing, regarding Cinelli's generally, whether that date has become more solid based on more research and data points, or whether it has "solidified" simply as a result of breathing the special atmosphere of the internet.

Too late now. Owners certainly label their bike based on that "fact". Maybe through Spence Wolf records it could be confirmed or denied. Either way, it doesn't make much difference.

repeat it enough and it becomes truth, ie: the price of Confentes...

Wha? Confentes are certainly limited to whatever; they'll never be any more. While out of my league, certainly a holy grail to those who can afford them. Each is one of what, 220?

True, but I'm determined to be the fly in that ointment when things get repeated here.

True, but there is a bit of "self-fulfililng prophecy" at work there. The "mojo" factor definitely adds value. As to rarity "per se," there are fewer Wizards, but they don't command the same prices.

More Wizards are being made. Confente production ended long ago. Although there is probably even more rarity from builders, Confente is what it is.

Assuming you mean Confente-built frames badged as such (as opposed to Confente-built frames badged as Masis) make that 135. I may be off, but not by more than low single digits.

Some of the all-time great flame wars, here in BF and elsewhere, involve Confente and his frames. It turns out that the Masi-California world and its flotsam and jetsam spawned a soap opera saga of epic proportions.

Fortunately, threads about old Cinellis spawn only legit questions from people who truly want to know more about then (like some of the posts in this thread), heavy sighing (ditto) and keyboards ruined by uncontrolled drooling.
