I think those would be SJ / FSJ series, those were based on a full sized pickup while the XJ is actually rather compact... it is barely wider and actually shorter than our Sentra sedan.

Sure, it heartens back to when there was real wood. My cow-orker's question amounted to, why do you guys think that looks good? :D But of course, to each, his own.

lol probably won't ever be. All the men in my family had a full head of hair well into their 70's. On Flickr, there's a fun group that all post self portraits like this. Check it out some time if you're interested: https://www.flickr.com/groups/70316043@N00/?added=2

90's Land Cruisers seem to be the 4x4's of choice for the hard core non-Jeep crowd around here.

My dream car is an old International Scout or early Bronco

Land Cruisers and Jeeps are much nicer... they are much more stable and very well built.

We got a little snow... as much as 18 inches in some places and drifts are 2-3 feet deep... and it is still coming down.

All that and the temps are supposed to drop to -30 C tonight.

With the exception of the old Grand Cherokee you can find a decent Jeep XJ at a good price, Land Cruisers tend to command premium prices here.

Looks like a clean IH Scout will run upwards of 8k, a really clean Land Cruiser will cost more than double that, and the prices on the original Bronco seem to become stratospheric.

cobrabyte 11-28-14 03:28 PM

Yeah man those Broncos, they're wildly expensive. I'm quite happy with my '01 XJ so no real need for to get anything else in the near future. Mine's a rear wheel drive though. It's a great camping vehicle but I kind of wish it was 4x4 so I may pick up an old junky Jeep Wrangler and make a fun project out of it one day. There's certainly no shortage of those!

We have a 1984 Landcruiser up at the cabin. It has 295,000 miles on the odometer and still runs fairly well.

Sometimes we have to put it on the charger before we start it, but then it runs pretty well.

It has an old Meyers plow and two Warn winches to help pull the dock out.

I'll never sell it. Heck, I don't think I have had it over thirty mph in the last ten years.

Our youngest son is going to learn how to drive in it next summer. I'll have to make sure the cow catcher's welds are solid. :)

gomango - My Jeep has 300,000 km on it and runs like a top... figure it has another 200 - 300,000 km on it before I have to think about doing any engine work and pretty much everything else has been checked over.

The roads are a mess here right now and I watched a lot of people getting stuck on side streets or digging themselves out this afternoon... the Jeep just plowed through it like it was nothing despite snow coming right up to the rocker panels.

With all that being said, I am looking forward to getting out on the bike tomorrow if the snow shovelling doesn't wreck me.

:D

i helped my buddy put a lift on a wood grained/white XJ/Wagoneer back in the late 90's. I can't seem to find pick though. I used to offraod my CJ a lot and the XJ's that went with us were always very capable.

:D

Careful with that shoveling!!!!!

FWIW My brother rolled through a Wagoneers and Cherokee over the last thirty years.

Before that he had a pale blue IH Scout. What a beast. :)

I think a Jeep should be a standard issue here in Minnesota.

I've owned a US Forestry Service CJ 5 and then a pretty red 1986 CJ7.

Unfortunately Mrs. Gomango detested the CJ7 with the top down.

Nice... mine are German.

Reminds me that I am gonna have to go and dig Stretch out of the snow if I plan to go for a ride later.

dandypony 11-29-14 09:48 AM

You can't beat them for cost and functionality--at least in terms of commuter panniers. But I'll stick to my Ortliebs for camping and touring.
