Head badge screws for the Bottecchia, and around 50 more bikes too...

A couple of crank cotters, a pin spanner wrench, and a straight seatpost bolt for putting my Bottecchia back together.

The nice part about all of this is that Baratza sells all the parts for these and you could practically build a whole new one from parts, if needed.
Yikes, is that common? I do like when manufacturers are willing to sell spare parts.

And I got some reading material recently.

The (V)BQ back issues arrived yesterday, and the Rene Herse book a few weeks ago, but I don't know if I'd shown it off yet. Really neat stuff all around. (BTW, I like to take dust covers off and store them for safe-keeping.)

Eh, I think it's only happened to me twice since I started using nice grinders ~8 years or so ago. The new Baratza design uses a plastic main gear that will sacrifice itself instead of eating itself and the drive shaft of the motor, which is what happened to me. All the replacement parts are the new design so I should be good for another 8 years.

That's a relief! I wonder if finer grind settings increase the risk.

I have to say, I was skeptical that the type of grinder could make much of a difference in the coffee, but it does.

Another Bottecchia frame showed up today. I grabbed this because it was relatively cheap and should work for a possible future project. Plus its the right size (big). Overall its in better shape than I expected and the chrome is lovely. The Nuovo Record bottom bracket is nice and smooth. The headset however is probably the roughest I've ever felt. No worries, I don't want to use it anyhow, but I'm curious, can anyone identify it?

I can't, though I'm sure others can. It looks cool, though. If it can be repacked, personally, I'd keep it.

I wont get rid of it but going by the way it feels I'm expecting it to be well beyond being a usable piece. Its so rough though its possible its just full or dirt or rust or one of the balls has broken. Its really really rough...

Got me thinking now though. Plenty of projects in line before this one, but I probably need to just yank the fork real quick to see whats what.

Ever seen ultra high pressure grease that is so sticky it feels like glue? Its used on heavy machinery of some sort I think. Probably not calling it the right name either, anyway I have used it with new bearings on hammered cups and cones and the results are quite amazing to keep them going.

Another non-expert here, but I do recognize the 'Rinko' style, which allows quick removal of the fork for transit. That could be a very useful feature in certain cases. It might allow you to put the bike in the back seat when you otherwise could not, for example. I'm guessing most people in here already know all about 'em, though.

Well I'll admit that I'd never seen a Rinko headset before. Pretty cool, now I know I'm going to have to take this thing apart soon. I'll post more when I get into it!

I would be all about drilling down on this to find out if its old, rare or otherwise. In my way non expert opinion it would be very cool if this was an obscure constructor thing, which I think is possible.

Edit, after quick research it is a constructor thing and endorsed by Jan Heine but seems fairly new to him. Alps and Hirose are in fact a Japanese constructor co. that started in 1918, but closed in 2007.
