Standard 6001 cartridges. They can and should be regreased proactively. Remove the dustcaps, carefully crack the rubber seal with a tiny screwdriver, flush with a good degreaser (nothing water based), let them dry out for a day, and then repack with grease.

Your biggest problem will be trying to remove the alu dustcaps. Sometime in the past I was gifted a bucket of these hubs, and even though they were new, I found it impossible to remove several of the caps non-destructively. This can only get worse with time, water and corrosion.

You should marinate your dustcaps with penetrating oil for a day, and make an effort to remove yours soon.

^+1^ the dustcaps are VERY prone to corrosion, maybe the threads are both cut AFTER anodizing, but they gall and freeze-up a LOT. I have broken a couple Mavic pin spanners try to unscrew frozen caps...try soaking in strong ammonia, and then follow with penetrants like Kroil, maybe heat as well. Be sure to grease those threads or use anti-seize if you manage to get to that point in the rebuild. I think Mavic spec'd really high-grade cartridge bearings as they seem unusually smooth compared to generic brands from the bearing house (which these days could be from China or Slovakia). Phil Wood is said to have done the same with their bearing spec.

Very very nice!

I have three bikes with Mavic, two almost "tout Mavic", and one "mostly" Mavic. Such nice stuff, and not seen every day.

Thanks to all who helped get this group together! What I thought would take a lifetime (and life savings) to put together was completed within a few months with a modest budget.

Super sweet!

What is the backstory of the frame? Who is K. Mills?

Plus1. The 500/550 hubs are one of the better quality items on any of my bikes.
