jfowler85 stellar deconstruction of a painfully misguided post.

So you do indeed feel strong emotions towards a class of inanimate tools. Interesting.

How do you feel about hammers? Or sliding compound miter saws?

John Nash

Thought never to return to post to this thread again (guess why), but...

"Because of the earlier flight, the Nashes' car service wasn't there to greet them, and the couple didn't have a cell phone. They waited with the Nirenbergs in terminal B, chatting to pass the time."

--from The final days of John Nash: the untold story of his 'dream week'

Apparently the Nashes may well still be alive if they had a cell phone.

On the other hand, it says something that they didn't use cell phone...

P.S. It reasonable to infer that the Nirenbergs also didn't carry a cell phone with them, either, for otherwise the Nashes could have used their cell phone to call car service. (noted: Nirenberg is 90, Nashes in their 80s "OldieInAmerica" )

Don't get logical with them, after all, they're not logical.

Really? You couldn't figure out what I meant from what I said? Here we go again with the English issue you severely are lacking in as evidence here once again.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I own a pay as you go cell phone and very rarely use it. I never take it on the bike for commutes or longer trips, but would probably take it on a multi-day trip. This weekend I drove my sister-in-law's minivan from Miami to NYC and took the cell phone, which I used once, to tell my nephew what time he might expect me in Phila, so they could plan dinner.

I could see taking a phone on a multi day cycling trip, I've done that on my weekend bike tours. I also use a pay as go Tracfone because the rates are lower than a contract for my needs, and the unused minutes rollover. But for everyday riding there just isn't any need, I like the idea of figuring out how to fix something on the road and getting back home again on my own without contacting my "mommy" to come get me.

Wow. What a read. You guys are hilarious. Just because someone carries a phone does not mean it owns them, nor does it mean that they "call mommy" at the first sign of trouble, NOR does it mean that they IMMEDIATELY check their maps before trying to figure it out themselves.

If you're the kind of person that REFUSES to carry a phone, and insists on thumbing your nose at those of us who do, I implore you to never carry a cell phone. You probably don't have any friends and no one will miss you. Good bye.

rekmeyata - deep cuts, my man. Again you fail to understand me (or at least pretend not to comprehend). I'm asking if you really mean those words or if you're just trying to stir the pot. Can you understand that?

If yes, please answer without the unnecessary hostility.

If no, please explain how I can better use words to make sense to you.

Is this an example of a pot calling the kettle black?.

It's just a cell phone, not an identity statement. Nobody REFUSES to carry a cell phone, they simply don't carry one. So just as carrying a cell phone doesn't make someone a slave to one, not carrying one doesn't make someone a Luddite.

I don't carry a cell phone on a daily basis simply because I don't see a need for one in most of my daily life. Since I don't expect to need it on my commute, carrying it only serves to increase the risk of dropping or losing it.

I agree with the unnecessary hostility coming from both sides for which I apologize for my side of it, so to prevent from going in that direction again I will refrain from responding to this issue.

There was a period in my life where I essentially refused to carry one. Without going into detail I once had a job where I was expected to carry a pager at all times. And no it was not something illegal, it was public safety related.

I would get paged on dates, paged on weekends, and frequently paged at around 2:00 am because about that time was when there were likely to be issues I had to address.

After I left that job, I really grew to like having large swaths of time where I was inaccessible. About 15 years ago, I started getting some pressure at work to get a cell phone. In my mind there was nothing so pressing at that job that couldn't wait an hour while I was at lunch or wherever I was. It wasn't until about 7 years ago that I finally broke down and got one.

Bikes: I have 3 singlespeed/fixed gear bikes

It seems that cell phones have become just as controversial as spandex

I get that. After carrying a cell phone 24/7 for business, I started considering it a leash. When friends asked me why I started scuba diving, my pat answer was "no phones below 30 feet", and there was an element of truth to that. As soon as I was able I chucked the phone and went without for almost 10 years. I now have one, but few people have the number, and my voice mail greeting says not to bother leaving a message unless I'm expecting your call.

So I consider the cell phone something I carry for MY convenience only, and rarely use it since I'm adapted to living without some of the convenience it would afford. OTOH if/when I felt it was useful, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
