I saw a robin fluttering in the curb this morning. It looked hurt, but I couldn't tell what might have hurt it if it wasn't hit by a car.

Coolest find but also sad - a dead Anna's hummingbird. The flashy male and in immaculate condition. In the middle of the bike lane like it had been hit by a car, but not one feather was out of place. I picked it up and held it to the light and saw the gorgeous colors for the first time. (I've been feeding them for years, but out the window I only see them backlight. It's even tough to tell the females from the males from inside.) The other amazing characteristic - they don't weigh anything! I've read 3 grams, one penny, After holding that little guy, I believe it.

And I always make a point to stop and pick them up. Even if I have to go over to the sidewalk for a minute and wait for it to be safe enough to stop and bend over in the middle of the travel lane.

I'm not just being a nice guy though. It's self serving because I drive my car on the same roads I bike commute on. I figure if I just leave a nail in the street for someone else to find, karma will make sure I'm the 'someone else'

On one occasion, it was more than half a bucketful of drywall screws dropped by "The Barefoot Carpenter" (according to the lettering on his truck)

I pick up quite a few, but not every one I see. There are just too many of them. I'm more likely to snag stuff at intersections where I'm forced to stop.

A year or so I saw a big pile of large construction staples right in front of a local tire shop, busy 4 lane road.

A car stopped, so I started pulling staples off of the road.

Someone from the tire shop came over with a garbage can and dust pan, I think. Anyway, within a minute or so we got all the staples removed.

Not one person from the cars got out to help remove staples.

As I was finishing up, one guy yelled from the car.. "hurry up, some of us have places to go", or something like that.... Perhaps he was joking, but I really wish his place to go was to the tire shop to get a flat repaired.

I def lose stuff more than I find it...

I lost a pack of smokes on my way to work one day, fell outta my pocket and didn't have time to go back for it. Such a bummer! On my way home in the middle of the night tho, I swung a U and there it was! It had indeed been run over but not completely..!

What I fiiiiind tho mostly is I find that I see way too many dead animals while riding around this city... Constantly! Dead pigeons, rats, mice, bunnies, etc... I remember that was real surprising or disturbing when I first started riding. Never occurred to me I'd have a better view of roadkill...

Ooohhhhh! I found this real cool gold soccer ball! I was on my way home from a bar shift and had stayed to chill with the waitress way late. I don't play soccer but I HAD TO HAVE IT. I had been drinking, yes. I know...
I already had a full load on my bike but I strapped that bad boy on top of the other crap and rode my shame and pride home in morning rush hour. Got spotted by someone who knew me too, of course... Oh well...
Anyway I still have it. It's super cool actually. Not sure if it inflates or not but maybe someday I'll find out...

I found a female wallet/purse type deal in the middle of the road on an early Sunday morning. It had $200 cash, a girls drivers licence, bank card, ect. Stuck it in my jersey pocket. After I got home and took a shower I went to the address and it was in a sleazy trailer park. Knocked on the door and this old guy answered. He was the girls grandfather she lived with and he was drunk as a skunk. he said she probably lost it while delivering papers that morning. I hope he didn't steal the cash, he looked pretty shady.

I also found a big baggy of marijuana once. Opened it up and dumped on the side of the road, it smelled nasty. Don't know how people can smoke that crap.

I found an olfactory adventure. Where the Humboldt Bay Trail leaves the Arcata Marsh and curves around to the bay, something must have happened. Remember that time you left the lettuce in the fridge a couple of weeks too long, and then made the mistake of opening the bag? Multiply that by about three acres. Nearly lost last last night's dinner. I think this was the same morning I found the person sleeping on a trail bridge. They're small, noisy, aluminum bridges, not a place I'd choose to sleep; but at least they were away from the ticks.

I found this on the road. A little battered.

It had me puzzled for a bit. But, I think I have it figured out. Definitely a bicycle part.

Riding home along the highway this afternoon I spotted a gorgeous dark grey kitten, probably four or five months old, stalking something in the grass. It was feral, and in a really bad area, so there was no way to even try to grab it. No point in ruining both our days for no purpose. Still...

There are hundreds, probably thousands, of feral cats in the Phoenix area. I suspect that's normal in other cities as well. I see several on most early morning rides.

They're part of the wildlife. Like birds, mice etc. They have their niche in the urban ecosystem.

Yesterday I found this off hard plastic container tube. About the size of a water bottle. With a flip up lid and a round bottom.

No idea what it was made for or why it was on the side of the road....

Also have no idea why I need it but it's cool so I kept it. Maybe I'll use it to store something that needs a little bump protection when hiking and biking.

I was in the bike lane of a busy road a couple years ago and found a wallet that had exploded in the gutter, probably 20 different cards everywhere and two $2 bills. I scooped it all up and spent a few minutes at work trying to find the owner. There was a high school ID so I called the school and gave them my info to pass on to the kid. So later he calls me and says he left the wallet on top of car after getting gas a couple days ago. I met up with him and he looked through everything and said the only thing missing was a single $2 bill. Amazing that all that stuff sat in the gutter for two days and nobody even noticed the cash.

Friday. Friday I was riding home, just leaving town over the sketchy bridge, when 10 feet past it I found two law enforcement vehicles blocking the highway shoulder. They appeared to be after something or someone under the bridge. So my options for continuing were take the two feet of the shoulder they left, with heavy traffic cresting the bridge and speeding up for the highway, leaving them about a second to notice me and move to the other (probably occupied) lane or slow down, or get off and walk along the steep embankment past the parked vehicles, which I did.

Also, this morning I found an abandoned bike frame. I walked over to check it out, expecting a cheap Huffy, but it's a Specialized Rock Hopper! So tempted to rescue it.

I found a Canon SX20 point and shoot camera. I was going to try to locate the owner using the pictures on the card, but there was no card.

I should, shouldn't I? The trick would be getting it home; can't carry it on my bike, but maybe the bus? Hmm.
