It's about 85º or 90º here today. I wore full cycling kit and sweated as hard as I wanted to. I started out slowly and built up the effort, because I enjoyed it so much. My boss and the new junior engineer were working in boss's office, and I go through there to the wiring closet where I change clothes. As I emerged from the wiring closet, I said, "In as Superman, out as Clark Kent."

I'm drinking my ice water which I have on hot summer mornings. I now have a nice routine of hanging all my soaked clothes on a tall stool in front of a box fan. It doesn't seem to push a body odor through the office, and when I put the clothes back on, they won't be gross and clammy. These nylon-or-whatever jerseys do get stinky, though. I might be better off wearing wool as I did yesterday. Why suffer through that stink and risk causing others to suffer it?

What did you wear? It might make a difference.

it's my stupid effing head. even with my buzz-cut, it turns into a goddamn 360 degree fire hydrant at the slightest hint of warmth.

@Steely Dan, do you wear one of those wicking rags under your helmet? Some people swear by them.

no. i've never heard of that. it's probably something worth checking out though.

but even beyond all of the various strategies for dealing with sweat, my dislike of summer goes deeper than that. i simply don't like warmth. i don't like the feeling of warmth. i don't enjoy the sensation of it. it's unpleasant and uncomfortable to me. warmth = badness.

i like cool. i like being cold. cold feels good to me. cold is very, very nice.

we're now officially in my least favorite season of the year.

i know i'm a bit unusual.

i'm also just extra grumpy because it's only mid-june and were already in the freaking 90s. it shouldn't be this effing hot yet.

It just felt like a grim slog today and I can't figure out why. Weather was cool and breezy, my heart wasn't bothering me.

55F, partly sunny; I have been feeling generally beat since 2 cross-country redeyes last weekend. I keep riding though. Tomorrow I have to head up to Seattle straight from work so will be driving.

Today was the first day that I wore shorts and a wicking shirt for riding, and changed at the office. With temps in the low 90's by this afternoon, it was that or skip a day (or two), and I missed 3 days last week, so...

Just took it slow, aimed for a steady pace. Succeeded.

The last few times I've put on my pack I've sort of half-noticed it seemed light. I figured it was out of water and no cargo, but no, it turns out the lock wasn't in it. Want to know where the lock has been all week? Hanging from my hitch! Let's just say a cable lock is not really adequate for locking this up. And yeah, it's been bouncing off the ground.

Nice morning. With a new experience for me: when I got on the canal towpath, I saw the red tail light of another bike in front of me. I had just about caught up with him when we got to the end of that section of the path, he went right, I went left. I think the guy was a commuter, though.

Went for a 77km/48mi ride on Sunday and although I wasn't trying to push myself, I am pleased that I was able to complete it with an average moving speed of 24.9kph/~15.5mph. However, it was the longest ride of the season so far so I was physically exhausted after I was done and took yesterday off and an easy ride in to work today. I have to continue to do rides like this so I can do back-to-back centuries (not the same day, consecutive days) in preparation for a charity ride in mid-September where we'll be riding (in a group so I'll benefit from drafting when I'm not pulling the group) 4 consecutive century days, a challenge for most of us but the terrain will be relatively flat, a total of 1,900m/5,700ft climbing over the 4 days.

Anyway, today's commute was nice, a comfortable 17C/63F temperature but a moderate breeze from the SE so, other than the first third of the ride, I had a headwind for most of the ride. It was overcast and the forecast threatened rain today but now, 2 hrs later, it is nice and sunny.

Similar weather for the rest of the week I think but of course, rain forecast for the weekend when I'll do the same 77km ride again.

I wear a Buff, I have a couple of different styles (not just colour patterns but designs too). However, I have found the headband style to work the best. They really prevent the sweat from my head getting into my eyes and stinging them.

Really cool pic @esmith2039.

I'm back to work after a road trip to Wisconsin for my sister-in-law's college graduation. I went for a run on Friday morning in Appleton and saw a few bike commuters. It was pretty flat there compared to what I'm used to. But I can see how wind would be a big factor too.

About 70F this morning with 80% humidity. Some afternoon showers possible I hear.

73 degrees this morning and the humidity was not too bad. Funny, I got Lasik a couple of years ago, and after twenty-odd years of wearing glasses it's amazing how quickly I forgot about lenses fogging up in the summertime . I cut ten minutes off my time from Monday. Have a good day, everyone.

Today's plan was to take my road bike for a nice long ride, 42km/~26mi, as my way in to work. I got up at 5am to wake up my son for his early shift and went back to bed and didn't want to get up at 6am but by 6:25, I was up, outside and on the bike. However, 6:25am left me little room for stopping at the halfway mark for a brief rest as it would take me about 1:40hrs to ride that distance and I had to be at my desk in 2:05hrs after putting my bike away and showering. After 6km into the ride when I was riding mostly south and west, my route changes direction to east and then north and that is when it struck me, the 22kmh/13mph constant wind from the northeast. The headwind was going to sap my energy and lengthen the time it would take me to complete the ride so I decided to cut the ride short to a 22km distance which means that I take the 2nd exit off the highway. As I was riding down the ramp off the highway, I realized too late, that I had taken the first exit off the highway, not the second so my ride was shortened even more to 18km. Oh well. I have a few tweaks to do to a geological map I'm working on that I can complete before my editor arrives.

It was cool, 11C/54F, and breezy as I mentioned and sunny but not sunny enough to really make my arms feel warm, I'm glad to be inside the building now.

Tomorrow is my 57th birthday and I've taken the afternoon off, originally to take my wife to her doctor's appointment (the treatment, a new one, may make it difficult for her to drive afterwards) but she doesn't get home from work until nearly 2:30pm (6am-2pm shift) so I'll have some time after lunch to do that long ride for my commute home (assuming I don't take the wrong roads again, LOL).

In another week or two my wife and I, along with the dogs, will be shifting out to our 'beach house' for the summer. The gardens are in, of course, but I can only get out there once a week or so to water, mow, etc. And that's where I was last night. It's been dry lately. I bailed a lot of water out of the sump to pour on the tomatoes, peas, strawberries... but it was still dry. This morning I got one bucket of water that I was pouring on the strawberries when there was a flash of lightning and I thought, okay, maybe this isn't necessary? So I locked up the house, got on my folding bike and headed for the station. I got a half mile before it started to rain, and by the time I got to the station, four miles later, I was thoroughly drenched. So, in my wet shirt, wet shorts, wet shoes... I spent an hour and a half on a refridgerated train. Really unpleasant.

A bit cooler this morning and wet from overnight storms. My wife asked me to drop something off at the vet since it's on my way. I'm sure she told me what it was but (as usual) I wasn't really paying attention and put what looked like a pill bottle in my pocket. Arriving at the vet's office I gave the receptionist the pill bottle and her face made me realize I'd been riding with dog poop in my pocket.
