My old Trek 700 with it's new front rack and bag from Nashbar.

My new Raleigh Clubman with Axiom rack I added and my $3 stainless bottle I got at Kohls.

Here's my new joy, its a Cannondale Hooligan 3 with some On One Mary bars, and some various accessories and stickers. Still a work in progress = )

As much as I love the way those look. What purpose does it serve? It's not a folder, it's not a mountain or BMX bike, it's not a road bike or a hybrid. They're cool as crap, but I just don't see why Cannondale built those in the first place.
How does it ride? And other than a commuter, how do you view the bike?

Its a mini velo. They are popular in areas where there is not a lot of storage space, and there are models from manufacturers like Bianchi and Miyata. Most of them are city and road bikes, there's the odd mountain mini velo out there, the Hooligan is relatively unique in that it is a very BMX-ish mini velo. I'd imagine Cannondale made them for the asian / european market, and they just made their way here through the spiffy factor eventually. In Japan, they have 3 models of that bike, in a bunch of vibrant colours too!

Purpose? Small footprint like a folder, without the hinges and proprietary parts. Most mini velos are perfectly normal bicycles with the exception of the small wheels. You can get it up small staircases / elevators with ease, have more space in your apartment, and then go enjoy a nice riding bicycle later.

I rather like how it rides, and just wrote a review here if you are interested in reading it:

In my office after the 8 mile ride.
K2 Diamondback Edgewood LX. I got the small frame. I wanted a medium and they didn't have it in the store so I decided I would take the small. The Large was too much for my inseam. The small actually is a great fit for me it just looks like a girls bike and I get a few questions on that. Whoever decided a man's bike have the high bar was missing his family jewels or was a woman who did it out of spite. The women's bike frame is so much friendler to the groin.

I think the bike I ride daily is also a small and I guess what you a consider a woman's. No complaints and seems to fit me well also.. have a 32 inseam. And I agree about the higher bar.

I don't think it looks like a womans bike but that is what I get asked because of the low bar. Really when it is for keeping my manhood safe I don't care what they think it looks like. I have ridden my wifes MTB before when my old MTB had a flat and I didn't have time to mess with it and the kids were really wanting to go for a ride. People give strange looks. Why someone decided to make a difference in bikes I don't know they should have all been the same and companies would have saved money only having to build one frame type for men and women. Riding a woman's bike doesn't challenge my perception of myself or any other guy on a woman's bike .

My inseam is 29 I am 5'4" and very stocky I weigh in at 190 and I am trying to get back to 170 where I can fit 32" waist jeans again. I am very lean with ab muscles starting to show when I weigh 170. My father who is the same height wears the same size pants I do at 170 and he is 145. I injured myself running last summer and put on 20 lbs and I gave up running my normal 6 miles and decided to cycle to burn my weight back down.

My Redline. I've not bothered to put the rear rack on and have been fine with a backpack so far.
700x30 cross tires roll well enough while handling the ruts and bumps.

Ready to rock bike to work day in Denver tomorrow. I'll probably ax the bar ends and replace grips pretty soon.

Step through frames allowed women to mount and dismount a bike while wearing a skirt.

woot! i had an '08 or '09 3.0. it was the last yr before they went to disc brakes. i loved that bike, it was my first bike and i wish i could have kept it. I got a new bike about a month ago specifically for commuting.

my new commuter:

its bone stock as far as components go. i have a mirror, a high and low beam LED, rear LED, rear rack, a spec computer, and a nashbar garment pannier since i have to dress up for work. i plan on upgrading to 700x28 or 700x25 tires from my current 32's as well as getting some crank bros egg beaters...i'm also considering getting a spec secteur for my next bike, only for non-commutes/joyrides and commutes w/ little/no cargo.

I like the looks of that - what model?

I put some ergo grips on mine today. Haven't fitted the headlight and taillight since I'm not commuting in the dark while on vacation. I get by with either a small pannier for lunch and undergarments or a market pannier for laundry haul once a week (uniforms and towel).

Sirrus.

When I traded it in, I was reluctant when I was looking. I got my Transeo NEW for cheap, and I think its hard to beat the price of the value. My employer reimburses me half for any fitness equipment(up to $500/calendar yr) but I can't use it on accessories UNLESS they are bought at the time of the bike purchase, so between the bike, new equipment(rack, fenders, half toe clip, high beam light, pannier, and mirror; i already had the computer, low beam light, and rear light) it was about $600-$650 after tax. I paid $26-$30 out of pocket, so I really couldn't beat it.

Bikes: 1980's Miyata Seven Ten

Can't compete with some of these great bikes, but might as well add mine!

'89-'91 ish Miyata Seven Ten (710) 54cm. Bought from a nice oldie on Craigslist for $250! Great deal in my book especially around Boston! Added about $150 in upgrades to make it suitable for commuting (lights not on for picture - 1W blaze and LD600), and will be starting my new job in a few weeks! Can't wait

No need for competition; that's a great bike that many a commuter would be proud to own!

what kind of fenders are those? I have a tough time finding good fenders to fit on my sputnik... I use cheap removable ones.

They are planet bike Hardcore Road or Hybrid. Decent fenders.

https://ecom1.planetbike.com/fenders.html

REI usually has them in stock.

EDIT
Thought you were talking about the Miyata fenders.
