picked it up off ebay for like 18 bucks i didnt wanna spend no damn 100 bucks for a rack i would only use a few times, yeah im gonna paint it its in the test fitting phase right now im adding some bars to go from it to the top screw holes on my fork drops to make it easier to attach bags. to find it on ebay just search for front rack bags and they will show up, really are pretty good deal.

I couldn't pass up the recent sale and coupons on the Nashbar touring frame and fork. Finally got all my gear moved over to it.

With 3 young ones, I am finding that it's very difficult to find the time to ride these days especially on the weekends. Browsing through this site, I have been motivated to commute, and decided to commute at least once a week, 18 miles each way.
I have few bikes each for specific purposes, but none for a commuter use. So I decided to convert my clunker for commute use. It's a no name brand, Motiv RockPoint II which was bought at Costco over 20 years ago. It was the first bike that I purchased in the late 80s. Although a cheapo, it still has decent frame, cro-mo 4130. Since it was always garaged, the frame is in quite excellent condition though. For sentimental values, I haven't been able to part with it all these years.
I have been looking into fenders and panniers, but I was undecided until last Friday when I rode to work. I rode with my backpack which weighed over 20 lbs due to laptop. And I realized that I better get that weight off my shoulders asap...dang shoulders are still killing me.
Here's my clunker...I mean commuter. By the way, sorry for the bad phone pic.

BigSung you got it with the drive side out and a light colored wall behind it. That should suit all. It looks quite practical and I admire it. I commuted three years before I saved up enough for the Trek. I have one after another of the Xmart bikes with parts from other bikes to keep them going. The best thing I ever did was make some mud tires into studded ice tires. I have commuted almost every day since then, regardless of weather. Good luck. Blues Frog

Bigsung, Check out this thread, lots of other people have turned their old mountainbikes into commuters:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...light=hardrock
Yeah, the threads over 3 years old, but it shows you what you can do.
Consider adding lights, it will be getting dark early sooner than anyone would like, fenders are great for helping keep the nasty road grime, oil, brake dust off you and your bike when it rains.
I've been commuting on mine for 5 years now.

UPDATE: Installed Planet Bike Hardcore Freddy ATB fenders last night (pics upcoming). Also ordered a pannier.

Looks great, you did a really great job. Although I would probably throw that brake on the front instead of the back.

Slight up date to the good ole M-80 got new crank set moved up to a 50 tooth and now running 3 rings, and a fancy new titanium BB, and to think three months ago it was a 1x8. Ive decided to use her as my touring rig now as well and i live in idaho so i needed to make it a little easier to climb when i get the new rubber ill post better pics. It almost looks naked without any bags on it feels weird riding it without em too. Gonna go on a weekend ride next week lets see how the ole beast does.

Great lookin rig my friend! do you have the rear fender and rack on the same eyelets or are there two back there? Also, powder coated?

I decided to finally go with a rack rather than lugging stuff around on my back. The pannier is actually just my backpack which I was able to secure very snuggly onto the rack that came in the mail today.

Not missing anything if you feel fine without it. But it probably wouldn't a bad idea to put some black cloth tape on, to protect the bars and add some grip. But it's your call.

my commuter for the next few days ive already torn apart the m-80 swapped tires between the two bikes, i guess i did such a good job converting the m-80 from a mtb its being a pain in the ass converting back they look funny with the tires swapped. Im getting the m-80 ready for a mountian tour/camping trip.

Another little upgrade to my little burro who has been getting quite the workout of late... swapped in my Blackburn handlebar bag and it conflicted with the bar mounted lights but with the addition of cantis I freed up the fork mount and added a light bar.
This really improves the functionality of the lights as they cast a longer shadow on objects... and days are getting shorter and shorter.

My Univega Gran Premio and wife's Trek 420. We have a short commute so we carry backpacks for now. I would like to get a nice rack for the Trek though as she often has more to carry than I do. Plus she has rack mount bosses. Any suggestions for a rack system that bolts on to a bossed frame? Most of what I see is "retrofit" ready, but I don't want to use clamps if I can mount it properly.

my cypress st, that basket does the trick for $7, currently use a mini maglite with an led upgrade and a 5 led sigma rear light. wasn't sure which subforum to post it under but since i do commute with it. Sugestions on upgrades? Thinking of switching the kick stand for a two legged one, and considering a change of the stem and handle bar, definitely going to change seatpost, saddle and pedals eventually.

Start work in a week's time, I plan to ride this there and back, it's approx. 13km each way. It now has clip in pedals, they're so much better than the previous flats with annoying plastic retainer.
I don't really need to carry much, I think most days I can get away with bringing nothing, other days I'll use a backpack.
