Sometimes I like people who won't pass and right hook me. Sometime I wish they would pass me but I guess how are they to know I'm about to collapse going up a hill. When someoen slows behind me I try and stand to pedal a little faster to clear the upcoming turnoff for them.

Took the loong route home which involved alot of pretty long tall hills, texas wise anyways, and it was a really nice ride. Realized we have lots of blind corners and hills around here and it seems people weren't willing to pass me on them fearing what was on the other side. For being 93+ degrees it was actually pretty darn cool out.

I came in this morning at 5AM with only a single little white led forward (normal lighting elsewhere though) since my wife and I's dinotte lights are in for upgrades. It is amazing how well I know my main commuting route. I instinctively know when I need to move over and when I need to do a little bunny hop over that 4" gap that crosses the whole road. Took it a little slower since I was going by twilight but it was a really nice ride. I think in total I saw less then 20 cars in my 11 mile commute and there was only 5 cars at work when I got here in a parking lot meant for hundreds.

Nice cool ride in, misty then stopped. Just straight commute, no kids or other errands.

Managed to pick all the wrong lines through traffic this morning. The traffic problems were compounded by all the right turners and people turning right from the middle lanes and all the cars trying to get around the right turners. Also had to deal with a wrong way cyclist coming at me while we were splitting lanes! Lastly, I saw a guy on what looked like a brand new fixie, newly covered in innertubes with one blue and one red wheel. He looked a little unsure of himself too so I'm guessing it's his first fixie so bravo to him for braving the traffic.

Bleah. Woke up with migraine aura, took the bus. Should have either biked, or stayed home. Weather change coming, plus stress because I kinda might have quit my job yesterday... I set down a timeline for some changes I need, or else I will have to move on. I've been promised a lot of supports for going back to school but none have yet been forthcoming, so it was time to take matters into my own hands.

I definitley need to be on a bike right now, not at this desk waiting to be told my fate.

My ride in was very mellow. I think I reached 20mph only once, to make a yellow light. This tiime of year I never know if I'm going to get to go home at 5:30 or 9:30 so I made sure I had my light and, just as importantly, that it's charged.

Thanks for the good wishes... I'll know by lunchtime I think. It's a bit of a snakepit here today.

The bit about the lights at 9:30 made me smile. I'm far enough north that it's still full light at 9:30 - sunset isn't till 9:52pm today! - and the long twilight means that we don't need lights other than for visibility to drivers until about 11:00. I have red, white and orange blinkies but won't have to think about an actual headlight for seeing my way until late September probably. (But by November I'm going to be commuting both ways in the dark for an 8:30-4:30 job, so there's a cost to the 16.5 hour summer sunlight)

Yeah 9:08 for us, and there is still light at 10, but I'd want a headlight by then, I think. Sunrise ~5am, but lightening by 4. My lights are definitely away for the summer.

Not today, but the other day on my commute to work, I heard a catcall whistle! I thought it was the BF, who had caught up to me since he usually makes that whistle behind me, but he was nowhere to be seen, so he was probably still at home. Then I saw a guy on a road bike ride by the other side of the street (I was making a right turn) and gave me a head nod. I'd like to think he thought my bike was sexy =D

My ride in was sans spouse, and therefore substantially faster. I think I made it in 5 minutes faster than usual, since I made all the lights.

kinda a rougher than normal ride...4th day of a new diet (no caffiene/sugar/wheat/dairy/animal meat)....Surprisingly easier than i thought it would be though...the hills were def harder, i felt my heart allot more than normal but my average HR was down like 10bpm? took the same amount of time...maybe no caffiene helped with the lower Bpm...

other than that just another beautiful Socal day!!

Headwind in, sidewind home. Light spritz on the road during the day. 80 and sunny on the ride home. Perfect. Got glass in front tire (lucky I noticed it at a stop light and fished it out before my 40mph descent). 5 days in a row of 20 plus days, legs are tired. Wish I could take the canal path, but I'm stuck on city roads. By the way, during descent blew past bloke on a recumbant. Felt kinda bad about going by so fast, but I got a fast roadster and he doesn't. C'est la vie.

53F and blustery. "blew out for lunch"...and over-did it...took it easy on the return ride.

Buglady, seconded, hope it works out well. In a not-too-dissimilar situation myself. Compounded by some physical(?) bug. Still riding, but no energy.

Buglady, best wishes for the best outcome...and from a former migraine sufferer who's cured for good, if you want a suggestion in that direction I've got that too.

Ride in today again cool and cloudy and breezy, but made much nicer by a pleasant encounter with a fellow commuter about halfway in. We rode a few blocks together before our routes diverged, yakkin' about the weather and what to wear and this and that...it was kinda like meeting someone from this forum in real life! The other pleasant thing is, I'm getting better at this. Successful commuting is a combination of so many things: planning, dressing right, choosing a route, knowing when to merge, knowing when to make a move, agility on the bike, being able to spot the opportunity where you can make that turn without buzzing peds in the crosswalk or getting tangled up with cars. I watch other bike commuters (16 today that I noticed) and see how they handle things, and try to emulate the ones who seem like they're successful. The large majority are successful, which really tells you something given how diverse they are.

In sum: bike commuting is cool.

I beat the cicadas this morning, they decided to sleep late. I'm gonna get swarmed on the ride home if I don't keep moving. And yes...they do bounce off your helmet at "high" speed LOL.

Oh yeah...seen like 8 other people on bikes. One always gives me "the wave"...which I always return with "the nod".

Yet Another Nice Day. 60F, clear skies. I was out hashing (running for beer) last night and we were up until after midnight, so this morning I took it slow and kept the Liquid in her "15MPH" gear. Caught a woman on a hybrid, stayed behind her, and later a guy on a road bike passed both of us.

No dead muskrats on the MUP this morning!

Against doctor's orders and a mother shaking her head ... I am back! Not quite three weeks after spending Memorial Day weekend in the hospital with all sorts of broken ribs and punctured lung from hitting a couple trees while mtb --- I'm back to commuting! (actually have been out riding for the last couple nights)

And boy did it feel good to not ride that infernal bus and gain my freedom! And what a lovely morning it is too - low 60's, low humidity and low pollen count ----- nice and clear!

And, hmmmmm, am I ... slightly ... faster?

Ugh, traffic was the big el sucko again today. Must be cuz I'm leaving later than usual. Lots of slow crawling waiting for gaps to develop and looking for lanes that weren't impassable. This was much easier in the winter.

Had a nice long walk of shame last night, firstly I was waiting at Wellington/Strachan in traffic to take a left (lots of traffic, very slow going) and decided to put some real effort in, standing up, jumped on the 'gas' and got an immediate seizure in the drivetrain somewhere, knowing that wasn't good I got off and picked my bike up to take it to the sidewalk. Apparently I'm an idiot and hadn't put my rear wheel in properly and it'd actually come out of the dropouts (didn't tighten the QR enough apparently). Then, not more than half a mile later, I take off from some lights to get onto the lakeshore bikepath and hear a slight 'airy' noise, I couldn't hear it well enough to think it was me, but I figured it was the traffic not feeling much, as soon as I got to the corner the back end slid out and I heard the tell-tale tyre wall rubbing on the floor and yep, I had a flat. So I did the 4 mile walk of shame, one person out of all the cyclists asked me if I needed a kit - I said no thanks, I just didn't have a pump. He didn't stop, but at least he asked as he passed by.

Got home, fixed the tube and let it sit, put a new/spare tube in got it back in (with the wheel secure this time) and rode to the east end. Slow rode over, some guys on fixies (couriers, by the looks) just blew me away - insanely impressive how fast those guys go (acceleration as well as top speed).

Rode into work from the east end this morning, which I've only ever done with my MTB before. Needless to say I blew my MTB time away - great ride in. Had one lady very clearly turn directly in front of me from the opposite side (Church, 4-lane two-way street) and do a 3-point turn, I had to veer HARD left to avoid her (was going about 25mph) and gave her a lot of verbal, stopped pedalling and waited for her to catch up and gave her some more, including some less-than friendly advice to get off the phone. I caught her again later on and shouted (she was still on the phone and had her windows up presumably for the AC) "you're a crazy lady!".

Just to be a party pooper, be careful with that stuff. Do what the doc tells you. Internal injuries and busted ribs need to heal properly. You've only given it 2 weeks?

The ride home yesterday was a bit on the miserable side. Wind, a flat, picking up the kid from daycare, and not eating enough clobbered me. Anyways..... I ate a ton last night and still have completely exhausted legs. Going to eat more today and hope I catch up.
I think I should have picked a better week to try my first all week commute in and back each day goal.
Mon: above 90F temps
Tue: torential downpour in the morning and evening with 60F temps
Wed: wind, picking up the kid, and generally tired

Hopefully things are a bit easier today. Tomorrow I won't be picking up my son and get to take the Tarmac into work! Woohoo!

Got drenched on my way home yesterday, and had a doctor's appointment (with a new doctor) for a checkup after work. Since I was already soaked anyway, I rode over to the doctor. I was literally dripping on the paperwork as I filled it out. Got a joking lecture from the receptionist at checkout. Ah, if only I was still single.

Coming back from the doctor I saw some kind of raptor (falcon? hawk?) sitting on the top of a utility pole, being harassed by a smaller bird. The raptor was probably too close to the other bird's nest. The raptor was doing his best to ignore this annoying little bird, sitting on the pole and looking absolutely regal.

This morning I saw the mother duck and her ducklings on the golf course again. The ducklings are adorable.

All in all, a pleasant change from the way I usually see wildlife on my commutes (flat).

I almost got run over by a bus this morning, but other than that, the ride in was fine.

Last rib that had more than one break in it finally knitted and quit moving last weekend. Still hurts, but not badly - trying to build up the lungs (being able to breathe good and deep - need it for the hills!) as the nurse's were amazed from the damage that I had no outward signs of bruising - internal. But I feel good.

I'm not doing anything nuts - took a few curbs with no problems and am commuting on my tank of a mtb which takes the bumps/curbs etc quite nicely.

And I'm not <sniff> going out mtb with my wild guys for a couple more weeks, going to stay on the roadbike this weekend and get some miles in. I am taking it easy. Thanks though
