And I can relate to what flimflam said. Trying to remember what you wore in different temps. I just figured I was getting old?

I wrecked this morning. I skinned my knee and strained my neck but that was it. While I was out of the saddle trying to make a light, the chain decided granny gear was better than the big ring. I went right over the bars with the change in resistance.

Neck is getting a little sore...could have been worse. Mostly it was embarrassing.

Bikes: 80's peugeot. Somewhat knackered. Lovely new Salsa Casseroll singlespeed.

Sorry to hear about your stack, Littlewaywelt. Hope the neck feels better today.

All very uneventful last few days, except that I got beeped again on the same section of road. It's a fairly narrow, quite busy one-lane each way street with cars parked down either side. I don't judge there's enough room for cars to pass me safely without me being pushed into the door zone, so I take the lane.

That stretch is perhaps 300 metres long, and finishes with a roundabout that invariably has a short queue. I ride down it at about 30km/h, and it's a 40km/h limit.

It's very irritating to keep getting beeped! Maybe Sydney drivers are getting more aggressive? All for the sake of 10km/h and 10 seconds earlier to the traffic queue!

The other day I was following a bus down that stretch. Buses only travel around 25km/h down that road, but I don't see anyone beeping them. Perhaps next time I get stuck behind a bus I'll keep ringing my bell, and making 'move over' gestures, as that seems to be the done thing when stuck behind slower traffic on that stretch!

Commuted for the first time today! I'm waiting for my Redline 925 commuter to arrive, so today I took my Redline Monocog SS mountain bike - the commute is a mere 2 miles, so obviously it wasn't a problem except for the lack of fenders to keep from getting splattered mud all over my work clothes. This is my second week at this job - I've never worked close enough to commute daily. I was 25 hilly miles from work at my previous employer, and would commute twice a week during the summer, but it took a ton of planning and time and I couldn't make it work daily.

I'm PSYCHED to get my fixie commuter later this week - I know I'm going to be wishing my commute to work was longer than a mere 2 miles!

it's 71f degrees in knoxville today. made a trip to downtown and back, about 7 miles roundtrip. everyone i encountered was safe, aware and courteous. must be the nice weather. or maybe it's all my attention-getting garb. lots of fellow riders out today too. that's always nice to see, since it's rare to see another cyclist on my work commute.

Dunno what the problem was, but it's gone. As I was wheeling the bike away from the carpool after work, a bungee cord got wrapped around the cassette and under the deraileur. (I stupidly tossed it on the rack when I parked this morning, rather than put it in my bag.)

Two minutes and two rubber gloves later, I was able to extract it. I must have knocked something loose - maybe a pebble caught in the gears - because it was fine after that. Next time I have drivetrain problems, I'm gonna toss a bungee cord into the deraileur.

Went to Times Sq. at lunch to go Christmas shopping. Not the worst madhouse I've ever seen, but it soon will be. Fast forward to rush hour and now it's cold and drizzly and I have two boxes stuffed in my backpack sticking out and giving the rain a way into my bag. And since I didn't listen carefully to the weather forecast, I didn't have any rain gear. Luckily, wool still keeps me warm even when wet and still smells nice afterwards.

A BALMY 51 degrees this morning in the DC area - it is like winter tried to arrive last week and then retreated. A great commute in shorts and t-shirt!

Winter seems to have retreated (for now), now anything in the 40's and 50's feels warm after having adjusted to the cold. Nice, warm ride in on wet streets, fortunately no rain yet in the DC Metro--hopefully that holds for the ride home. I felt good but was up since 4 am, which actually worked out well since I had to be in early today. The ride was uneventful and quiet, I saw only a couple of runners on Mount Vernon Ave. and only one other rider on the trail. I concentrated on spinning this morning, it was nice to be able to maintain some speed. I heard something about the return of Winter but I don't want to aknowledge it.

Very strange weather again today in NC. It was 60 degrees at 6 a.m., which made for a warm commute. However, the roads were wet all the way to work, like it had just rained. I checked the 8-hour radar loop on the local TV weather website, and we got no rain overnight. So the roads were wet just from dew. I've never seen dew that heavy before, and it wasn't even foggy out. The high is supposed to reach about 80 today, so I wore a short sleeve jersey with arm and leg warmers so I can peel them off for the ride home.

34F this morning - warmest it has been here (Maine) for a while. It made for a splashy, slushy, salty commute however. +1 for nanotech fiber pants - I just wiped the grime away when I got to work, and you would never know I commuted in them.

Welcome to the HHCMF (Happy, Healthy, Commuting MuthaF*ckers) club! We're a happy bunch of donut eating fools looked upon with equal parts jealousy and lust by people stuck in traffic watching their expensive gas burn away as you fly by in traffic. OK, they don't lust after us, but people that dig our muscular legs and butts do. And commuting on a fixed gear rules!

So my commute included seeing two other bike commuters that I lost after the first hill and hitting two side view mirrors w/ my open jacket as I went zipping past. Stopped by Rockefeller Center and took pics of Christmas stuff.

Hello to the people on their first commutes! It's a great feeling.

Ordinary ride today, although I was passed on the Harbour Bridge by a dude on a MTB kitted out with a petrol engine. At first I thought it was a motorbike on the cycleway.

It kind of annoyed me, for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on. I turned that anger into energy, and caught up with him at the steps!!

Bikes: See my sig...

Today's ride home brought crap-tastic to a whole new level... it was the kind of weather where studded tires offer little help.

It was +1 C and this melted the accumulated snow and then we got fresh snow so it was like mud bogging and there was also a nice headwind to add some icing to the cake.

Oh yeah... I also pulled my rear wheel out of place so had to stop and make some adjustments on the road.

Still... it beats driving any day.

Nice commute today; pleasant 39 degrees on the way in. A mostly uneventful (save for almost getting right-hooked by a bus) ride in. The forecast for morning calls for temps dropping by 10 degrees and "ice pellets", so it should be an interesting ride.

I finally got my problem with the wheels solved by picking up a nice, old set of old-school 8 speed Dura-Ace hubs laced to some Mavic OpenSUPs from a dude I ride with. They're a bit heavy, but feel buttery in comparison to the old, horrendous Shimano r500s.

It's also that time of the quarter when I get tired of riding a tank, throw off the panniers and don the o'le messenger bag until I get sick of having a sweaty back and put the panniers back on (usually takes a few days).

Oh, and an unrelated side-story. I've been starting to use the bike to ride into the city when going out, basically meeting friends at our destination instead of driving or catching a ride. It gets some looks from the more "conservative" of the bunch, but it's generally looked upon with a bit of amusement and interest. Gotta love it when moving between establishments. "Maybe you should get a head start," they say, "so that we're not eating without you," which gets a chuckle from me as I find myself scarfing down a couple of beers while waiting for them an extra 20 - 30 minutes while they navigate through Saturday night traffic and find parking in the Village. Those rides home are much more enjoyable as well.

The ride in this afternoon was warm enough to pocket the hat, the ride home later this night, hat back on! Nothing unusual there I guess. Our snow has all melted away and the studs are making quite a cacophony on the dry pavement.

My prefered hat is a Smartwool Headliner. It's super-thin, not too tight but plenty warm. The price isn't bad at $15-ish.. It's my sole headgear besides the helmet until the temps start dipping into the teens.
