I Want for Winter!

Surly is introducing the Krampus - think Pugsley with 29ers...

I would have laughed harder had you said that you wanted it for Christmas.

hmmm... maybe the Christmas idea isn't so bad - I'll work the 'but honey if I'm going to ride all winter in snow and sleet and ice I neeeeeeed a Surly Krampus for my commute.'

Of course St. Louis doesn't really get that much snow, sleet, or ice but....

So if the snow is fresh , you are OK.. for black ice, I'd still want the grip of studded tires..

I understand the rationale for the Pugs and Ogre, but the Krampus seems to be filling an awfully small niche. What can this bike do that the Ogre or Pugs can't do? No 3" studded tires currently available, and there's unlikley ever to be a large enough market for such tires. Pugs now have 4" studded tires, street tires, mountain tires, and you can run any 29" tire. Ogre will take a pretty wide range of tires. The Krampus does look great, but . . . .

Bikes: I have five of brikes

for winters in chicago, i'd want anything that has studded tires. ice is a FAR more common occurrence (and bigger danger) than snow around here.

I rode one a couple weeks ago at Cuyuna. It's a killer rigid mountain bike. The geometry and the tires make it just want to go over everything. Super fun. But I'd classify it as a flat out mountain bike. It would not be my choice for a winter Commuter if I were in the market. I think the Ogre is a much more versatile platform to build a commuter on.

Oh ok... just don't tell my wife. Remember the goal is to convince her that I need a new winter commuter

The Krampus tires are very light for 3" tires (like 2# each instead of 5#, even with the increased diameter) It is also basically a mountain bike with scant pretension for do-it-all 'practicality' or zombie apocalypse indefinite backcountry survival.

Are there really commercially available 4" studded tires?

I sold my wife on the pugsley by convincing her it was just cool and abandoning any pretense of practicality (and in fact the pug has had no practicality for me whatsoever, on the days it would be the best commuter, generally the whole county is shut down so no work and I need to stay home w/ the kids whose school is closed anyway). It's not a card one can play very often (I'm thinking every 10 yrs or so). For me it was also my 40th bday so looked good next to a 2-seater sports car (which she would have preferred for herself in fact) or other possible midlife crisis retail therapy.

Man I just love what Surly's doing. I'm seriously scrambling for a justification to buy one of their fat bikes.

Curious.. what does a studded pugs tire run? My regular ol' 26/1.9's are the cost of a small car tire...

none that I know of ..

NB: see the WRC rally car races, they do the Swedish races in winter,
the wheels are fitted with narrow tires, to get thru surface snow to firm ground.

Humboldt bay art bike races, they used several tires with 3 or 5 rims side by side.
pop-riveting aluminum flatbar connects them.
Taller tire in the Center contacts hard ground, all in mud and sand.

OK its a make not a buy thing ,but you can make a studded tire , flanked by 2 regular ones
to get the width.

Sun has a fat tire bike with Sturmey's 2 speed kickback coaster brake,
they sell for about 800$, so a less pricy toy..
