We had fog so thick recently that it might as well have been rain.

That's how it has been the last few mornings. I get just as wet from the fog as if it was raining. I also feel slower (even though I'm not) in the fog.

On the way in was a long, warm ride through the countryside with pastures and field mice scurrying into the ditches. On the way home was a cool 50s night ride on the main highway under the stars and large low moon with very little traffic. Tomorrow night will be lower 40s.

Decided to take the 1 mile shorter route home, so 14.5 miles but with more 2-lane road traffic. It has a good bit more climbing, which also means a good bit more descending. As such my time is usually 10-15 less despite only 1 mile difference. But the longer route is a lot less stressful.

this week's rides have been a mix of lovely autumn rides through forest leaves before starting my job at 10:30 am and painfull , lump-legged rides in newfound semi-darkness at 7:30 pm , after a full day at work , and some rain ( got soaked last night !!!)
Temperatures are nice though, no gloves and still in shorts.

We have been having great riding weather. Upper 30's in the morning and low 60's in the afternoon. Today I'm going to do the full commute. I've been multi-modal commuting up to this point. Launch time 6:00 I'll be interested to see the time difference of driving and then riding versus just riding. Can I do it under 1.5 hours?

Have a great day.

Cold -2C (28F) with a wind chill of -8C (18F). Newish winter gloves were a little cold on the initial 6km (4mi) into the headwind but for the rest of the ride, my hands were fine.

I forgot to mention that as early as last week, I've been hearing studded car tires. I didn't think they were legal until the end of October but I just checked and learned that October 1 is the first day they can be used. Why? There's no snow on the ground, no ice, just a couple of frosty mornings.

That's actually quite impressive. I find I only hit them with the back wheel as they do the suicide run under the bike. You were either traveling really fast or he was determined (or hung over).

No ride today - out of office meeting. The ride home yesterday was one of those where I wonder why I do this every day - cold, rainy, cloudy, slow, yucky. But today I feel like I'm missing something and want to get back on the bike. Insane

The cold is worst then yesterday, I feel like ****. I feel like I've been hit by a truck. Fortunately I had a great tailwind this morning. The ride home tonight will take a while. Should I call the wife to get me home?

Sorry to hear that, a cold is tough to weather out, especially if you have a long ride home. I say, no shame in bailing, you've got your health to consider.

Bikes: Giant Defy Advanced 0, Rivendell- Sam Hillborne, Montague folding bike.

First ride in a couple of weeks, a nice day for December, but quite cold for October. About 28f. Rewired the DIY bike lights last night, with a rotary switch to control both front and back lights. I only need worry about one battery now. However, a lot more single point failure modes.

The sun is now directly lined up with Gilmer rode for a couple of miles.

30F today. Was maybe a little overdressed, once I got to work and stripped most of my gear off I was still sweating for five minutes.

Notes -
Shaved my head this week. The headband under the helmet usually works pretty good, but on the one faster section I started getting a brain freeze!
I've got a studded front tire on. Really didn't need it today, but I want to break it in and you know, just in case. Definitely slower with the tires aired down.
Got some great cheap ski gloves at Costco, my hands are soooo warm. But, they don't grip real great, so they feel slippery on drop bar brake levers. When it's cold enough to need the ski gloves I have to ride my hybrid since it has the mtb style levers.

Otherwise, a good ride! Bring on winter!

A little black ice this morning and frost on the pumpkin. It must be below freezing, I didn't check. Took out my regular commuter today and let the road bike rest as the roads appeared to be all wet from last evenings showers. Nice ride.

I feel more like a bike commuter today than ever. Had to drive yesterday due to an off-site meeting. By the time I got home I was homicidal. As bad as drivers are when on the bike it is a hundred times worse in the car. I couldn't wait to get on the bike this morning.

Nice easy ride in. Coldest day for me so far - 45F/7.2C, but I layered well and was toasty warm. The next couple of days are bringing much colder weather, so my mettle will be tested but I REALLY don't want to use a car!

As usual, at my road crossings on the MUP drivers were extra polite and accomodating to us on bikes. I feathered to the front at a light I usually don't and felt guilty. Back to waiting my turn in line tomorrow.

LOL. I'll have to work on my posting skills! Anything with a negative in front will have me in my car - or staying home!

Chilly and slower than usual. I put the studded tires on my fixed-gear and lowered the gearing in anticipation of snow and/or ice. (It snowed a little yesterday.)

On the plus side, I didn't feel like I was about to have a heart attack, like I did during my first test of studded tires a couple years ago.

Weather's keeping up rather warm for this late in the season (mid 20's C / mid 70's F), with a bit of chill in the morning, and thankfully dry.

Unfortunately the DST is cancelled as of this Sunday, making my late afternoon commute home in total (urban) darkness... must invest of some descent lighting!

Forecast is for a bit of snow tomorrow morning but I'm going to plow ahead (pun intended) just like normal. However, my wife thinks that I've been tinkering with my new Kona Sutra enough already and to get it out on the road, so that's what I'll be riding.

First time I have even done a commute in anything resembling Winter. 39 degrees, no wind. Great first time out. I know I'll have to change my feet and hand warmth approach as I know what I have will fail if it gets much colder.

^^ Nice tights!! I like the colourful pattern.

Today's ride home was interesting. It was 4C (39F) and sunny and I couldn't see much movement from trees near the office so I decided to pack the tights and ride home in shorts but, it was quite cold with a strong headwind for much of the ride that created a -2C (29F) windchill. I was ok though, and pleased with my new gloves, light but windproof and my fingers/hands were fine. There were a few snowflakes, not really flakes as in the large soft ones but a bit more like pellets. The sun was warm and the clouds didn't seem to interfere with it shining on me but other clouds in the area were dropping this pellet-like snow, I could see the "mist" below them.

I got a bit of a scare though on the 90kmh (55mph) 2-lane highway portion of the ride. I was in a section where the paved shoulder was chewed up a bit so I would weave a bit to avoid cracks that could grab my front tire. This section also is a bit narrower, maybe 1.5m (1.5yd) between the metal guardrail and the rumble strip my side of the white line. Zoom, went a pickup past me with an odd series of yellow lights blinking on the top and then I realized what would be next, a tractor trailer with a WIDE load so I shifted a bit but it was already on me and passing me and then another. I'm glad that there was no oncoming traffic because the first one shifted over a bit into the oncoming lane.

Snow forecast for tomorrow morning, let's see if it's true.
