21f this morning, only had half day today as I have to transition over night shift this week, so from now on I gotta work 4pm to 3am so we'll see how that affects my riding.

Drove today because I am having a colonoscopy tomorrow and can't eat all day. All I can consume today are clear liquids, broth, jello and hard candies. That didn't seem like enough food to sustain my 30-mile commute. Won't be able to ride tomorrow as that is when I am having the procedure. Hopefully I will be back in the saddle on Thursday.

cloudy, sprinkles, 35F. The ride home yesterday sucked - sleet the whole way. I don't know where the line is between sleet and hail but this stuff hurt. Expecting the same today and big snow coming tonight. I'm armoring up for today's ride home

I did my first commute of the year today. It was 32 in the morning and I was a little cold, but about 45 on the way home and I was roasting. This was my first ride on my "upgraded" Trek 7000 mtb/commuter. I put fenders on it a few weeks ago, but it was sunny out today so I didn't get to test them out. I only put them on because I had them sitting in my basement for 20 years, plus it was probably 5 or 6 years before that when I last used them when I was young, single, and living in an apartment in Seattle. They are mostly so I can ride in and not have to worry about rain on the way home. I won't ride in if it's raining.

Did something I NEVER do today, rode to work in the rain. I don't mind riding home from work in the rain, but I have a perfectly good truck and if it looks rainy, I tend to drive in. But today is really my only chance to ride to work, due to cold weather, doctors appts. and having to be out of town all week next week for training, I decided to go. About half way to work (4 mile mark) I got a little sprinkle, and kept going and when I was within a mile of work it started raining a pretty good lick. So I put my head down and kept pushing. So I was pretty well wet when I got into my office, but my clothes have the whole day to dry out, and it'll be up around 70-75 on the way home today. I feel better for riding, and would rather be outside on my bike than inside on the trainer, so I'm glad that I went.

20 mph headwind this morning will make for a nice tail wind tonight going home. 34degF and just a few flurries around. Some black ice but it remained dry for most of the day yesterday so it was fairly pleasant going today. I took a different route that I avoided until now because of a very busy and dangerous intersection and I mastered it in style. I was overthinking this one and its not that bad after all. I may use this route more often as it eliminates a long climb.

finally! Not to make light of the winter storms some of you are plowing through, but it was starting to look like we'd skip it entirely this year. Just a few scattered flakes, a brief dusting on the ground this morning but that's enough for me.It was also windy, crosswinds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts higher so I felt a bit buffeted. I was not blown off the road or into traffic however, contrary to predictions of most people who see my fairing. It just shifts (flexible mounting) and tilts into the wind so after a jink of three or four inches I track straight.

Had to drive today in order to pick my kids up from an afterschool activity while my wife is at a meeting. Just for fun I timed it. It's almost exactly the same amount of time to drive as it is to ride. But it costs $8 in parking.

Wednesday, March 5, 2013. Big storm front that started in montana and dumped large amounts of snow across the midwest. We ended up with close to 7 inches. I started out at 3:45am. Snow was still falling. The side streets had anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. I tried riding down what tire tracks there were but kept riding out of them and ending up having a handlebar wrestling contest. So I rode thru the untouched deep stuff, shifting to the middle ring and getting a good rhythm going spinning the pedals. High street in Worthington had been plowed earlier, but was due for another. 161 thru Linworth was about the same. There was no traffic so I rode down the middle of the road and made good time. The final quarter mile to work was a quagmire, but it was manageable as I zig zagged , wrestling with the handlebars trying to stay in the tire track. 31°f.

For me in DC, there was no snow storm to speak of but it was wet yesterday and work was closed.
Very pleasant and quiet ride in this morning, well abnove freezing. Spring is taking hold each day.

Windy today. It finally dried up a little though. Last night was a snowy ride home but I had a tailwind which was nice.
