just for a fun comparison:

to drive 3000km in my 1994 Audi A4, which gets 7.5l/100km mixed driving (31.36mpg mixed) ...

the fuel would cost 127.2p/l (2.03 USD/l or 7.68USD/gal) or

for 225l (30 x 75.l/100km)

alternatively, it would cost 287GBP (the cost of the bike) or 456USD.

interestingly, that's 157 bus commutes at 4.7GBP/commute or 742GBP (1181 USD)

a yearly pass is: 560GBP / 891 USD

so, the bike is quite cheap in the end.

I think I can sneak one more day of commuting in and then I'm off for a week to Frankfurt to move some strains from my old research group over to the UK.

A lot of travel this year, as I've only needed gone over 13 commutes once so far (16/month is my theoretical maximum)! Passport is getting full again, need more pages added quite soon.

long time!

spend a lot of time in the south dealing with getting a car sorted for my gf, a bunch of visitors from germany with much champange and a lot of teaching this week, so I haven't been riding as much as I'd like. on the upside, I'll be in germany for a long period such that I can get some time on the old MTB and drink some Glühwein at the Christmas Markets!

flat tire (tube) was £2.99 to replace (as of today that is $4.7, so I'll round to $5 and add it to the total)!

however, i did hit the pothole so hard that I think I broke the sidewall carcass on my rear gatorskin ... it now has a slight bulge ... but I'll run it until it fails.

stats:

3132km/1946mi
£547/$870 total
£0.17/km
€0.21/km
$0.44/mi
net money saved (bus fare saved minus running costs): £69 (1 month bus pass) + 8 days (£37.6) + 11 days (£51.7) + 10 days (£47) + 5 days (£23.5) = £229.8/$360.80
net maintenance since breaking even with the bike. £2.99/$4.7

still on top (but the chain is in dire need of lubrication)

£3 for a tube? That's a lot less than we pay here in local bike shops. Was it a regular shop?

Just wondering...

In your calculation, you listed the purchase price of the bike - but not the automobile. I would think that the cost of both (pro-rated by the miles of commute time versus miles in other uses) should be factored.

I agree.

I haven't completed the car sale yet. This will be completed in early 2015 and I'll produce a 5 year total usage pattern.

Roughly so far:

Purchased Apr 2010 for €2800. Sold Apr 2015 for ??? (expecting about €2000).
Driven 57000km (113k upon buying and predicted 170k upon selling).
Insurance (€700/year)
Maintenance: total expenditure over 5 years has been roughly €2000.

Hopefully, the newly purchased 2011 Golf will be cheaper to run than the older Audi A4.

Will crunch numbers once car has been sold in Germany.

Advent has already started ... got some sweet stuff already!

A nice "Adventskalender" with a different Bio/Öko-porridge for every morning.
