Bluethooth cuts out while riding

This thread is not about listening to music while riding, please find one of dozens of threads on that topic to have that conversation.

I have Plastronic M165 Bluetooth that I use with my Droid Razr Turbo, it works great for 99% of the things I do. However, I listen to music and take some calls while riding my bike and I have an intermittent issue with it totally cutting out. My older Plastronic Bluetooth doesn't do this, I don't use it most of the time because it has a very short battery life.

I play music saved on my Razr (not streaming). Typically, I hit play while I'm in the house, put the phone in my jersey pocket. Everything sounds great. But as soon as I get up to speed, the music cuts in-and-out... mostly out.

Any suggestions?

The only speed dependent thing I can think of that emits RF would be possibly wireless computer or dynamo? Try removing one or the other and see what happens.

Thanks! My bikes don't have any sensors, however, my Garmin 510 connects to my phone via Bluetooth - I will switch off the Garmin's Bluetooth today and see if that helps.

I attempted to do the very same thing using my Ipod and JBL ChargeII, but it just cuts out most of the time. I really don't think it is interference with bike computer. I'm thinking it's power line interference myself. I finally mounted the ipod near the speaker on the down tube and away from the computer on the bars so I can use a wire connection and it works awesome. I've been told by friends that they also have similar problems with bluetooth in cars as well. I do use BT connection while using my indoor trainer and it works great there.

Interesting ride yesterday. Turned off Bluetooth on Garmin 510 and the earbud continued to cut out. At a long red light, I took out the phone to check wind speed/direction. After putting the phone back in the earbud worked fine ???

Also, I did think of one other wireless device with me on rides, the ANT+ heart monitor communicating with the Garmin.

I once had a Plantronics headset that was wretched. If very much of my body was between it and the phone it would cut out. Sold that hunk of junk.

Maybe it's just your body position at speed?

Now I have an LG headset, I can leave the phone on my dresser and walk all over the house, I have to get to the far side of the basement or outside before it starts to break up.

Yes, it could be either the headset or the phone. Easier to change the headset, so try that first.

It's funny, I think about the phone's placement (in my jersey pocket) as an issue. But in my house, where I work, I can leave my phone on the desk and walk most of the house without loosing the connecting/quality of the call.

I wonder about the voice-commands function, does the Bluetooth thinks I'm making voice-commands because of the wind noise.

I'll make a point of using the old Bluetooth today, just to make sure that it's the Bluetooth and not the phone causing the issues.

Update: I think it is the location of the phone (jersey pocket). Today I was riding in causal clothes with the phone in the front pocket of my shorts and it didn't cut out. It seems odd that the Bluetooth can not communicate 2-3 feet through my body, but it appears that is the issue. I'll do more testing and post any new info.

Update: I put the phone in the thigh of my shorts today (like the way women put a phone in a sports bra). The music didn't cut out. Not my favorite place for the phone, but it helps ID the issue, it appears the Bluetooth is having difficulty communicate through my body while riding. Still seems odd.

OK, I guess it's just my watery body blocking the signal

Cross-body Interference
A little known fact about Bluetooth is that the radio signals do not go through your body very well. This is because Bluetooth's radio frequency is blocked by water, and the human body is made up of mostly water. If you keep your cell phone in your pocket and your headset in your opposite ear, then it is possible the connection may be weak, which can cause some interference issues. Many cell phone manufacturers are aware of this issue and have attempted to compensate by boosting the power of the Bluetooth radio.

Thinking back on days that didn't have issues, that was when most of my rides commuting and I'd wear baggie shorts with the phone in a front pocket. Now that I'm working out of a home office, most rides are in a kit and the phone is in the jersey pocket. Still oddly, some days are better than others, maybe the good-reception days are a warning that I'm getting dehydrated (ha)

I tried the bluetooth jaybird earbuds for a couple of weeks, same issue, constant dropping of the signal. I couldn't figure it out. My phone was in the back jersey pocket maybe a foot or so from the earbuds and still no dice.

I ended up sending them back and just going back to normal corded earbuds.

I'll borrow Lisa's sport bra first, to test the theory, before I invest in my own. But that begs the question, what the best sports bra for a man that has the chest of a 12 year old boy; and can still hold my cell phone? Maybe I should shop at Victor's Secret?
