First Ride after surgery

Hi folks, Got out for the first time since surgery. Been about a month. Can't believe how much I lost in the short time I was off the bike. went from avg of 18-20mph to around 14mph! Was only the first ride but man. I know my body has had to make some adjustments so not getting to bummed but I know I got some hard work ahead of me. Was a bit sore after also. One of the incisions was in the arm pit and that sucker is taking some time to get better all the way. Well that being said I am just happy that I am still ok to ride at all!

On a different subject I recently built an old diamondback for a good guy at church. Got about $150 tied up in it and it turned out real nice. He called me last night from his first ride and was as happy as a clam. He loves it! He wants to know all about it now. He is about 30 and he is crazy over riding now.
Guess we can add another to the rolls of cyclists. Best $150 I have spent in a long time!

The effects of general anesthesia, surgical incision lines, and your body healing take time. Look at yourself in the mirror, and take a deep breath. Bad news is you are not an 18 years old any longer, you are 50 plus. You just don't bounce back from surgury, a bad cut, or bruse like you did when you were 18.

That why in the good old days we did not draft 50 year olds into the Army, or the NFL would pass on you in their draft no matter how good you could throw, catch, or kick a football.

Good to read that you are back on two wheels. OTC drugs and Rx drugs some times just don't do as much good as a spin on the wheels.

Most definitely takes things at a proper pace for returning to bicycling. I have never had an issue after an operation in the past and came back pretty quickly. This latest one for prostate cancer was NOT the same. Too much, too soon and I was back to 10 years ago overnight.

Good luck.

Bikes: I don't own any bikes

I had surgery April 30 on my ankle (Massioneuve Fracture due to a MTB accident 4/18). I just got the cast off and am now using a walking boot. Doctor says (and unfortunately I believe him) it will be 6 months before I can try to ride a bike again (although I may be able to "spin" sooner). Talk about loss of fitness... just walking into work from the car left me exhausted. So enjoy getting back on the bike sooner than later... I am hoping although I will have lost most of my fitness and will be starting from stage one, it comes back quickly.

Good luck!

Wow! That is real bad! I am sorry to hear about your injury. Last year in July I had a mtb crash and broke my back. I was off all the bikes for 8 months and was just getting back together. Had gotten my avg to 18-20 and was feeling good in about 3 months so shouldn't be to bad for you. I can't ride the lefty at this point so all will be road for a while. The doc scared the stuffins out of me when I asked her about the mtb. She said to look at the scars and imagine them blown wide open Not a pretty picture! LOL I will wait the alotted time to go in the woods!

I am truley grateful for my blessings and my lessons. I have learned that I am not 20 and I do break much Easier. I have learned that my faith can get me through all troubles. I have learned I am stronger on the other side of troubles! And I have learned that it feels Really GREAT to get back on my bikes!

I had achillies reconstructive surgery a little over five years ago. That recovery was a bear. Non weight bearing for six weeks then the boot for another six weeks IIRC. The atrophy in the calf was scary. In fact it's still smaller than the good side. I had no choice but to take it slow but I did make it back. Being of a certain age does not work in your favor when you want to get to your active lifestyle.
I had a second cardiac ablation to correct a ventricular tacycardia last Jan 20, the first one was unsuccessful, and I am just now feeling totally recovered and back to riding as long and as hard as I want. I was blessed that I found a Doctor who could fix me.

Glad to hear your back on the bike. Easier said than done but focus and be grateful for what you can do and not what you can't do.....yet. It will come back

Talking to many people who have had many different surgeries what I hear is the worst as far as pain, and the one that takes the longest to rehab from is rotator cuff surgury.

One of my very good friends, a retired Marine who got blo hit read bad in Vietnam, did 19 month in a Navel hospital, and over thhhe curse of that nineteen months had over 20 surguries before being retired medicaly.

He year later blow out his rotator cuff bowling, and had it fixed. He told me that was the most painful surgury, and rehab he ever when threw,
