Butt Seriously Folks
Okay, a somewhat embrassing question. First the context. A couple of weeks ago went out planning on about a 50 mile ride, weather was great, wife was out shopping not back till the evening and 50 miles ended up being 78 miles. During the last 10 miles the old legs ran out of gas and I'm thinking I ended up doing more pedaling/pushing from the hips because when I got home and took a shower the old bottom was not only on fire in places but rubbed raw ( have had minor butt rash before "butt" not like this). I had to cancel my ride the next day. During the week parts that were raw actually scabbed up. Net is, two weeks later butt is almost back to normal "butt" still have to be very careful. I've been ensuring area is dry after showers, using a lot of Gold Bond powder. A friend told me about Bag Balm "butt" have been unable to find any. Do any of you have any other treatments you have used for this "buttcarious" situation. I'm planning on increasing the long rides and want to be prepared.

You can find Bag Balm at WalMart in the pet dept.
However, it sounds like there is a more serious problem than Bag Balm can fix. Are you sure your bike fit is proper? Is your saddle positioned correctly? Were your shorts bunching up causing that serious chaffing?
We need more information.

Butt wait, better yet, buy a tube of -Butt'r- by Paceline its a skin lubricant & chamois Cream (actual name) great stuff, but need to use pre-ride, not post ride. Post Ride I use polysporin. BTW- I agree with Louis, if'n its that bad you have something else going on. I was there once and found that the laundry soap was a problem. Started washing in baking powder and drying in air helped. (not my Butt, the clothes)

Before the comments come- I mean the cream and not an athletes foot- That is full of bones and is uncomfortable butt makes the bike heavy dragging the athlete along- unless he can hop pretty fast.

Thanks for the input. In response to Louis, bike is well fitted (had it done last year and have ridden about 2500 miles since, shorts are still a good fit). One piece I left out was that is was rainy at the end and my shorts were soaked. I've ridden a lot since and the "chapped cheeks" are getting better and further rides since have not made it get worse, it has slowly gotten better, just want to completely clear it up, especially with the hot weather coming. Red baron, thanks for ensuring both cheeks were covered, you da man!

I have had similar problem, though not so it kept me off the bike more than a day, and it only shows up after about 50 miles. I suggest you use either A&D cream or a "chamois butter" before heading out. Also, every 45 min to 1 hr, stop and re-butter. Forget the modesty, you probably won't know the people you are passing anyway.
Bag balm is good too, but I think A&D is better. Real bag balm is at the feed store, and was used to help moisturize and heal the udders (bag) of the old milk cow.

If you're already raw, it's too late to do anything to prevent it except take to heart the previous advice. To treat present problem, use neosporin petroleum jelly. The ointment is ok but the jelly is better. It will greatly speed up healing and keep the raw parts from rubbing together and prolonging the situation.
