Gary, you live in San Diego, and CAN ride every day if you want. The rest of us have either parked it for the winter or can only get one in now and then. Ride, my man, ride. Is all that worry going to bring in more business? No. Then ride, up the coast, along the ocean, just ride. bk

Looks like you have the consensus of this lot. We’re at the time of life where the “meaning” of getting out under the sky eclipses all that other stuff. Get out there.

Mind, I’m still a mite concerned about that “plateau” of yours. I s’pose I’m gonna’ need your assurance that you’re not ignoring the real [even if remote] possibility that you’ve got depression going on. What you call “plateau” is also at the top of the depression hit parade. Don’t let it slide or we’ll be looking for some other form of entertainment here on BF50+ besides the mystery which is “your life”.

Pop me a private message if you need to.

Don't ride-your heart's not really in it so don't go there right now. Just leads to more burnout.

Get your camera out and wander around and get some cool photos.

There is an awful lot to be thankful for and I bet you can capture it with your lens.

I have this strange feeling that as soon as you get a few miles from home, the cell phone will ring with an "opportunity" to go to work. Seldom fails for me!

What is it that you ride off that has five letters? I'm assuming it is a five letter word because you indicated the word with five stars.

Here you are with time to ride and all you do is talk about worry and plateas. I wish I had some time to ride. Look you can worry when you are working. If you have time off you might as well get over yourself and do what you like to do. Now. What is it you like to do? Ask yourself that. Maybe you just would rather worry for some reason there are people like that. They are not happy unless they are upset about something.

GO RIDE!

But an ex- freelance management development consultant to a current management consultant, for what it's worth..

When you're busy delivering, you don't have time for marketing, which is why life feels like (felt like to me) a series of boom or bust crises.

Suggestion - look at last year's diary, separate the clients you really enjoyed working with and who really gained from your interventions (and from whom you earned) from the time wasters. 1 Hour research.

For all the A category clients, end of year message about your appreciation, what you did for them and how much you hope to continue the relationship. Standard letter, inserting specifics, mailmerge. 3 hours.

For new potential clients, send out a statement of capability and documented results from clients who'd approve. Via trade associations, Chambers of Commerce and purchased mailing lists. 5 hours.

Then ride, and wait for the apples to drop. Gotta plough and manure, which is hard while you're harvesting - this time is your business development time.

Sorry if this is all obvious - well intentioned. All the best
Good advice, which I'm already pursuing. As someone mentioned, marketing is always mostly a question of timing. When I'm busy, it's hard to find time to prospect, but when I don't market, I can get "unbusy" in a hurry!

I've got a few ideas I'm going to pursue in the next few weeks. I just have to talk my VP of Marketing into 'em.

So the consensus of the group seemed to be "get out and ride," rather than whining and complaining about the lack of business the rest of the yeare.

So I did that.

Then, within the last 48 hours, two separate projects scheduled for early next year, each equivalent to about one month's work, were cancelled by the clients for budget and other reasons which are understandable if not delightful.

So I rode some more.

So why, at the tail end of a nice twenty miler, did I have to get a FLAT???

And why, since I now have a pump on the bike, did I forget to put the tire levers in the bag for some reason?

And why, since I had a cell phone with me, did its battery die, leaving me no option but to walk the bike a couple of miles back to my car?

And why did the OCP rodie who passed me fail to stop and lend a hand?

Can someone please forward me the recipe for lemonade, please? I've got lemons coming out of my ears.

Huh... squeeze lemons, add sugar to taste. If you are feeling all gourmet and stuff, make a sugar syrup by heating a cup of water on the stove to a boil and adding 1/2 cup of sugar. Then add that to your juice.

I would love your lemons. Here's what I would make:

Take a chicken breast. Pound it flat between two pieces of wax paper. Bread breast with flour, milk then cracker crumbs (also seasonings). Heat a pan, add some olive oil and brown breast. As soon as it is golden brown, add 2 pats of butter, squeeze in the juice of one lemon and toss it around, adding small capers at the end. Mmmmm yum! Serve with aspargus and rice pilaf.

BTW you weren't talking about metaphoric lemons were you?

A real recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
6 lemons
6 cups cold water
1 cup sugar

PREPARATION:
Juice your lemons, and you should get about 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. You can use bottled if you must, but the flavour won't be as crisp. In a large pitcher, mix lemon juice, water and sugar. Stir lemonade well and serve over ice, with a lemon slice or two to garnish.

Hah! I was right to begin with. So as long as you have the lemons, go to TJ, sprinkle a little salt on the back of your hand, bite a slice of the lemon and you know the rest.

DG, you are a nice guy and all that, but would you do me a favor and stay far away from me for a few weeks. I don't want to catch what you have.
