For a plethora of reasons, some of which were at least acceptable if not good, I hadn't been on a bike since Saturday. It is unseasonably cool here, so I waited until later in the morning to roll out, It was a trade-off - warmer, but much windier as it turned out. I was grateful I chose to ride a bike with variable gearing. Time constraints meant it was just the normal 15 mile loop. Somehow more of it was with a tailwind than not, and I made good time despite feeling slow and weak on a couple of hills. I stopped long enough to snap a photo of today's mount, Ruby the Lighthouse with the almost-half-step gearing, then pushed on.

The last stretch of Woodlawn I rode was a mild descent with the wind at my back - or, as we say, I had good legs - and I actually, for the first time ever on this bike shifted onto the 13T cog in the back for a moment or so. Thence home to what awaited me!

Finally got back on my bike this morning after life got in the way of my riding. 16 miles and a quicker pace as I claw back into shape after two total knee replacement surgeries. Felt good after and I am encouraged. The weather here in southern New England has been incredibly beautiful.

Well, our buddy and host here, Sasha, has a hairline fracture of his shoulder. 😞

12 miles on my fixed gear tonight. 3 miles to the Bills Backers bar to watch Buffalo whoop the Dolphins, then I took the long way home.

85km today, 34 degrees in Tokyo, 80-something percent humidity. But the cycling course I ride is mostly in the shade, so I don’t feel the heat and humidity so much. Even so, I was soaked with sweat at the end.

Normally I like to ride out to the countryside, but this means 20km through the busiest parts of Tokyo to get to the Arakawa river trail. The trail has no shade at all, and I have to ride another 45km to get to the to the trees. I can’t do the heat and humidity while at the same time being cooked by the sun. But cooler weather is coming, and I hope to start putting down some decent mileage when it does.

I found out that I missed my all-time best on the tour-de-Yoyogi by a single second :( I’ll have to push it a little harder when I go back on Monday. At least I wasn’t getting dumped on by rain like I was last week.

People put their exciting maps and pictures up. Mine are not exciting. Just standard rides in rolling hill cornfield roads. Last night 23 miles at 1 hr 29 min.

LOL. To each their own. I ride on them so much it has no novelty to me. Gravel and Chip Seal. Asphalt roads with no shoulder. Its the same reason I have no interest in going on RAGBRAI

To someone that grew up in the midwest and having been transplanted all over the world, pics of your travels through fields of corn, wheat, etc can also be very exciting. People from around the world post here, many have no idea how wonderful a field of corn is until they see it. Please post pics if you're able, especially with the coming fall weather and the stubble in the fields. I really miss the midwest. :)

Finally today I was able to get out and ride again. I haven't been feeling well this week, and my sleep is been way off so riding is a no go. I am almost back to feeling good so I went out and rode this morning for 15 miles, staying on the bike path.

Ride DC - Sept 7, 9000+ cyclists & no cars :)

My wife & I went up to DC last weekend to visit daughter Liz & her SO. Liz & I did the Ride DC Saturday morning for the 2nd year. This is a fun 20 mile ride around the monuments & downtown with streets blocked off and only bikes allowed. 9000+ cyclists but with 3 starting gates and wide streets it clears out quickly. We got in a few extra miles riding from our Yotel motel on New Jersey Ave. I bring Liz her bike as she only has room for a Peloton in her small apartment.

Heading out from the front of the Yotel

A fun ride and afterwards we saw the Washington Spirit professional womens soccer team beat Portland's Thorns in a close 2-1 game. 2 Olympic stars Trinity Rodman of DC and Sophia Smith of Portland had good games, especially Rodman who scored and assisted on both goals.

Did a 14 mile ride around mid morning. The heat in Tx has returned, so it wasn't as enjoyable as I'd hoped.

Oh well, at least I had some exercise.

Road my MotoGR to work today after mounting a quill stem adapter and a VO Postino handlebar yesterday. I like the more upright posture it allows! At lunch, after I rode over with the VO stem mounted with a downward angle I flipped it 180° to give an upward rise to the handlebar mount which riding back after lunch and then home again I really feel more comfortable with.

The MotoGR's going to become my 'commuter' bike so the Tarmac SL7 I'll be un-boxing for assembly tomorrow will be my first new road bike in 52 years:50:!

Miles for Mammograms

My neighbor and I rode in the "Miles for Mammograms" ride sponsored by the Beardon-Josey women's cycling team. It's a charity ride to raise money to pay for mammograms for women who don't have insurance or otherwise cannot afford to have one.
We had the option of the 25 mile or 40 mile routes. The weather forecast was iffy - heavy cloud cover with a chance of rain, and it was windy (10-15MPH) at ride start. As we were lining up for the mass start, we felt the first sprinkles of rain, so we opted for the shorter route.
As usual, despite the route, it seemed like we were battling headwinds no matter which way the road turned. The sprinkles of rain would come and go, and we finished the ride dry.

27 miles on the club breakfast ride this morning. We met up at an alternate starting point because Trek was starting a group ride out of our usual spot... with over 800 riders.

Our ride start in a shopping center parking lot:

Excellent food and fellowship for cycling, and a smaller group to allow for the solitude on the road (if you choose) that make this ride special.

We're riding with 2 locals here in Spain. I'm hanging with them on the climbs and they're teaching me about descending...which they do like fking demons!

Just a tad under 5 miles but proved the worth of the change from '70's bike tech to what 50+ years has brought to biking!

I'm going to enjoy riding around where I live now even more than when the only wheels I had were the tubulars on my venerable '72 Motobecane Grand Record.

Slightly over 22 miles today. Temps in low 80's, but kind of humidity/sticky.
Free give away week-end here where people are encouraged to put things on the boulevard they want to get rid of, but don't want to end up in the land-fill.
I got in on the action a bit late in the game. Did score a couple of nice 3 x 5 photo frames.
Found a nut driver handle laying in the road with a deep 10mm socket on it.

Found a new to me watering station about 6 miles from home, on a new to me bike path.
Stopped here for about 10 min for a slow rehydrate in the shade.

Foot-bridge over the Assiniboine R. at Assiniboine Park.
Kind of felt this ride today. The first 12 miles or so were directly into a fairly stiff wind.
Cruise homeward was much easier with the west wind at my back.

Finally I am feeling better. We got the Flu & Covid shots on Friday and it knocked me down for two days. Anyway I was out this morning at 6:30 am and rode for 17 miles. With the temperature at 53 f degrees the riding was nice. Someone was in a hot air balloon that I could see as I headed north on the bike path.
