Temps were around 90 when I set out this evening. Had a headwind (of course) for the first half of the ride, so the effort kept my HR creeping into zone 4 & 5. Hit about 30 mph on a couple of short downhills on the return leg, then ran my HR up to max on the following rise. It's really hard for me to moderate my pace lately, but my riding has been pretty sporadic this year so I don't have a great base to work with. At one point I hit 120 rpm without bouncing (a feat for me.) Planning on a long recovery ride early Saturday morning, when it's relatively cool and calm. Hope to get in a 2-hour ride then and start gradually increasing the saddle time over the summer. Aiming to complete a century ride in the fall. My shoes dried nicely and did not shrink, BTW, and the drivetrain is silent again. All-in-all an hour well spent today.

Yeah, I rode today. 4.67 miles to a car repair shop and home again. Errands count, don't they?

Excellent ride today, just about 50 miles on my new fixie. A beautiful day, temperatures in the mid 70sF, stayed close to the river and the coast, very nice indeed. But the main idea was to spend some time learning to ride the fixie, and I seem to be making progress. I've stopped trying to coast into corners, anyway, and begun to figure out how to go downhill while feeling more or less in control of the bike. Anyone who remembers learning how to ride fixed will know what I mean. Fun bike, though, and good for me - it makes me work in the hills.

First 30 degree day of the year. After a cool spell sort of a shocker.. So far . No.

Put on 25 miles today, it was actually HOT, almost 90 F with a 15 mph steady wind, first time I've had to "re-apply" sun screen in a LONG time! :) Stopped at the LBS to get a new "headlight", the Mrs. and I will be working a "stop" for the "Starlight Spectacular", night ride this Saturday and we will need to "ride" there (we have no car) in the dark! LOL, my old CatEye "halgon" single bulb lamp is pretty weak! Got a new "3-LED" CatEye, it seems a lot brighter on the LBS's "Test Board" so hopefully it will do the job. Got double tail lights and a blinking Guppy Light on the helmet also wear a motorcycle reflective vest so IF, I'm not seen, their BLIND! ;)

I did!

LAriverRat 06-04-10 09:30 PM

Yes, rode 58 miles, up and over Santa Fe Dam to Hwy 39. 90 Degree's. 10 minute hi cadence (100+, which is high for me), 5 minutes lower, 3 minutes max, 3 minutes lower, 1 minute all out, then lower until foot of dam. 18.1 mph avg, all up hill for 16.67 miles. Rested then went over the dam. Three stops on the return trip, drank a lot of water and went slower. Last 5 miles easy spin in the highest gear. Had fun today, tomorrow paint the extra room.

Rode to work and then rode back home today. On the way home, noticed what looked like a cell phone on the pavement in the middle of a busy intersection in downtown Indy. Picked it up and stuck it in my pannier. When I stopped and took a look at it, was surprised to see that it was some sort of blood sugar/insulin pump controller device. No evident owner name or phone number. Called the customer service number on the "Omnipod" when I got home and they took the serial number and said they would try to contact the owner. Four hours after I found it, got a phone call from the significant other of the man who had lost it. Drove downtown to deliver it to them at their hotel. He was without the device that checks his glucose level and regulates his insulin delivery for about five hours, a long time for an insulin-dependent diabetic. Mission accomplished.

You did a good thing. May it reflect back on you 10 times over.

You went WAY above the call of duty. Good on you.

Yesterday, we were traveling to Buena Vista/Salida, two lovely towns in the Arkansas River Basin in the CO mtns. We like to take our bicycles, so we rode in Fairplay along the way - a town of about 500 or so surrounded by mountains in the wide open and desolate South Park region of CO. Somehow we found an ice cream shop and had a cone.:D

Today we will be attending a function where my brother-in-law is running for Sheriff of Chaffee County. He is having a barbecue for his supporters and financial contributors (we gave a small amount).

Pete is two years my junior, and is one of those guys - like me - who just can't stop and sit very well. He runs and works out and looks about 50. After retiring from the Lakewood Police Dept in the Denver area, he has served as a police trainer in Haiti, Kosovo, Iraq and some other countries. Then he worked as a deputy sheriff in Chaffee County, and was chagrined at what he saw, so he decided to change it by running for Sheriff. However, he is a Democrat in a Republican county - so who knows.

Swam a lot in the pool yesterday. Nora is having significant breathing problems - I sure hope the sinus operation in a couple of weeks helps!!

Retired 06-05-10 09:01 AM

I did 10.629 miles yesterday. VO2 Max was 65, Watts 149.64, Temp was 82 degrees (I went out early), my time was 1:04:23. Humidity was 79%. Ave HR 102. Mostly Zone 2.
I had raised my saddle height then lowered it down and raised it up again. But when I got home I was in agony with the arthritis in my hips and knees. It was the worst I have ever had. I don't know if it was the height of the saddle or the sneakers (cross trainer), or the intervals I've been doing. I can't figure it out. I was in a lot of pain. I noticed the sneakers tend to lean towards the outside which is not normal for my gait.

Easy morning 16 miles. Checked out a few of the local garage sales.

A group of 4 met this morning at Murray's Mill in Catawba for the annual charity ride. We rode 30 miles in 2 hours with 900' of elevation gain. My wife made the loop just fine on her new bike. Nice morning for a ride though it got very warm by the end.

kwoodbury 06-05-10 12:34 PM

I like that

CACycling 06-05-10 12:52 PM

Got my wife to ride with me two days in a row! 13 miles yesterday and 19 today. Hopefully get in a 30 mile solo ride tomorrow morning before church.

Awesome. :thumb: Won't be long before you can join me on my Stone Mountain rides. Although I don't have all that fancy equipment. Just a Planet Bike Protegé 9.0 Wireless computer. :o

The heat and humidity are starting to build up so I guess I'll be leaving early (9 or 10 AM) on my rides for a while. No more 12:30 PM departure times.

Blues Frog 06-05-10 03:52 PM

Did a 52 mile ride. That is my longest for the year. I think I may do the MS150 in the state of Misery this September. Thus the increasing distance. If I hadn't had a flat to fix I might have made the originally planned 60 miles. Slowing down and stopping gave me time to think about how tired I was. Thanks for asking. Hope all of you folks are healthy. Wing Nut

Ron,
I don't have any fancy computers. The VO2 Max can be figured with the Cooper Method, and the Watts you can do on an online calc.
How long is Stone Mountain? I got some inexpensive bike shoes today and heavy tubes becasue I go over RR tracks.

Hmmm. I guess I never looked for that stuff online --- or never gave it much thought.

The trip from my house is 11 miles one-way. Not sure how you'd get there from Doraville.
Each loop around the mountain is 5 miles of hills. The outer loop is 8 miles with killer hills. I rode the outer loop -- once. :o

I guess you'd have to drive there or drive to a church parking lot along the Atlanta-Stone Mtn bike path (Tucker? or Clarkston?). We could me up in the parking lot and ride from there. Let me know when you're ready.

Since we did the 3 week cross country car trip (May 5 - May 25) my cycling is WAY OFF. No leg strength, breathing is weird, etc. So I'll try to keep up with you. :o

56 yr old Newbie to these forums.

Oh yeah. 51 miles on the trails in mud, thunderstorms and rain and flooded paths 6" deep on a cyclocross bike. The limestone and gravel paths were like riding through wet cement. 3 snakes crossed my path and a deer bounded out of the trees right beside me. It was great but messy.

First time I have done 50 miles in a long long time. :D

Cheers,
Gene

4 miles, I need to close my mouth though. Still can not master the stopping and getting off, kind of fall over. Have a huge bruise on my thigh. This too shall pass. Wondering if I should get the spouse a bike for Fathers day, I am loving it!

kr32 06-06-10 08:28 AM

Sunday morning 47 mile ride in 85° with 57% humidity, seemed hotter and more humid though. 15 mph winds and a lot seemed to be headwinds or crosswinds.
All in all a good ride but not as good as the shower afterward.

I can not seem to keep sweat out of my eyes even with a Halo headband. I lost one of the little rubber nose guards on my Oakleys today too wiping off the sweat. Really bummed me out as this was the second one I lost and last one I had.

Practice getting off not just when you are out for a ride but as a ride. Make the day of riding just practicing getting on and off. It will come with time.

I for one would not get a spouse a bike unless said spouse has shown interest in a bike. Even though one likes/loves, something and it is great does not mean one you love/like will too.
Might end up with a bike not getting used and sitting there with negative feeling on both sides, jmo though and that means nothing.
