I got out and rode for 20 miles on the route that passes the bmx track. Today is the first time I saw kids out there riding, so I stopped and watched for a bit.

74 miles riding at 32°F / 0°C isn't my idea of A Good Time. But you do what you like and more power to you for the effort!

We're getting our first real taste of Winter '25 here now; had ~ 2-1/2" of snow since yesterday, predicting another 1-3" tomorrow, another 1-3" tomorrow night then ANOTHER 1-3" on Saturday! Then the bottom drops out of the thermometers: -14°F / -25°C Sunday night, -16°F / - 27°C Monday night, -13°F Tuesday night... sheesh.

I wasn’t planning to one-up myself for last Friday’s ride, but I felt good, and decided to push a hard pace. I also added 20km to last Friday’s distance. I ended up getting 4th all time fastest on my favorite cycling loop, about 45 seconds behind the all-time leader. I got number 2 in my age group, less than 30 seconds behind. Had I known I was that close, I would have pushed just a bit harder. The cycling course is tough to ride fast, there are twist and turns, and at speeds over 25kph, I lean over so much that my pedals hit the road. I have to lean in to the turns while trying to keep the bike more upright, like riding a motorcycle. Now I understand the advantage of shorter cranks. I’ll have another go next Friday, weather allowing,

Not as badass as most of the people on here, but 5.6 miles today with 331 ft elevation gain, in the new bike pants I received for a Valentine's Day present. Went over a total of 50 miles on the new bike since it arrived a month ago. I'll take that, as someone who has been away from cycling for about 30 years.

I left the house late today and due to a cold front going through yesterday it is cooler today so no issues with the heat. I rode 20 miles today on one of my usual routes.

I'm so ready for a break in the weather. The 10 day forecast is mostly snowy-rainy-cold. I'm hoping to get out next Friday, when it's predicted to be clear and in the mid 30s.

essiemyra 02-15-25 05:06 PM

I got out and rode for 13 miles today.

I just found your post, does that mean you're back in the US?

Yes sadly. I can't recommend Portugal enough. Don't do Lisbon, seek out one of the small cities.

The rain stopped, so I stayed away from the trails. Lots of gray but the sun peeked out on the way back for a few mins. This was a new route over Jefferson Ave to my Canada Rd stomping grounds. but with a new 2 mile climb. Wet and curvy downhills on Jefferson were a little sketchy! nice to ride from home. but still too many vehicles!

I was out this morning for just over 5 miles to run an errand. We are supposed to have gusting winds today with 33 mph so my riding is over for the day.

spclark 02-16-25 06:14 PM

Wow, OTG, good on you for your coming B'Day! (I'm looking forward to my 76th in a few weeks, but not 'cause I plan to ride 76 miles that day!!)

Meanwhile back in my basement I managed 16.2 miles / 1,047' in 1:02 to a route on Mallorca courtesy of Rouvy:

Brings me to 117 miles for the month, 242 for the year. Come that 76th birthday I'll be in better shape THIS year than for my 75th last year!!

Ogsarg 02-16-25 09:13 PM

56 miles, 2200 climbing. Warm enough for shorts and no thermal jacket. A bit more headwind the last 15 miles than I would have liked but a nice day overall.

Good luck on your 76th B-day ride. Sounds like things will go well. :thumb:

Off today for President's Day. Got in 12 miles on the bike trainer in 45 min. Been a while since I did the trainer, been mostly on the Precor 842i Stationary Bike. 4 degrees F today, -16 C. Good news though! 40's coming next week. Potentially rideable.

nlerner 02-17-25 05:22 PM

Yesterday we had 5" of snow followed by 1" of rain followed by temps dropping into the 20s F. Things are frozen solid out there. Took a fall while walking the dog this morning. I won't be riding out doors for a while.

That's almost 100 miles for the week, just like my old car-free days in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

Thanks for your experience

I left the house at 4:00 pm for a short ride. I went down a road that we drove down the other night. The scenery is nice and not much traffic on it. I was able to get 14 miles in today.

paraphrasing ^^^^^ -- I left the house at 4:28AM for a short ride. I went down roads I always do because they are familiar. The scenery was basically not visible because the sun was still sleeping as I should have been and only a few cars. Rode a slow 12.21 miles. :D

essiemyra 02-18-25 06:27 PM

Another day I was able to get out and ride. I took my lunch with me as I left the house at about 12:00pm with time constraints. I was able to ride for 19 miles today, on a shortened version of a usual route.

14 'miles', 1,250' elevation in an hour six minutes, again to Rouvy my winter respite against the -16°F when I woke up at ~ 5:15 this morning. 131 miles for February, 256 for 2025:

(Beats slippin' & slidin', getting froze to the nubs trying to cope with the seasonal affect of a Wisconsin winter! No 12% grades here either!)

Please DO keep up with your reports and pictures from where you all are riding where it's sunny, warm, what I look forward to here again in a few more weeks!

50PlusCycling 02-18-25 10:22 PM

80km today. I had planned on doing 120km, but as I got onto the Arakawa bike trail, I was pushing into a 35kph headwind. As I had to be home by a certain time, and the wind was slowing my down to 15kph, I gave up after awhile, and headed back home by way of Tokyo bay. It was freezing and frosty this morning, Strava says “Feels like -6 degrees.”

Friday will be warmer, hopefully I can do a full ride then.

Beautiful day today, here in Scottsdale. Low seventies, sunny. I have been in computer purgatory the last few days trying to re-establish some huge 4TB external startup SSDs and having issues with making that happen. So today, I was just going to jump on my hybrid for a few minutes break and run up the street.

About 1/4 mile at the end of the street is an entrance to a mountain biking nirvana... Scottsdale McDowell Mountain & Granite Mountain Preserve.

The run up the street felt so good that I decided to continue on into the Preserve for a longer ride. My hybrid bike is quite capable on light to moderate trails, with 650b x 50 hybrid tires, so into the preserve I went.

After getting to a high plateau, I decided it would be a good spot for a photo, except... I left my phone back at home. So, I rode back down to the house, got the phone, and rode back up Dixiletta Trail, once again. All for a photo... (and a nice ride, too.)

In spite of having a nice new Trek Roscoe 7 mountain bike and a refurbished 1991 Specialized Stumpjumper, both of which I quite enjoy riding, this Trek Dual Sport 2 Gen 5 is my favorite bike to ride, both on and off road. It just feels so perfect to ride, light-weight, nimble, very quick and silent on smooth surfaces, and it just feels so comfortable to ride.

Trek Dual Sport 2 Gen 5 - a delight of a bike. I especially love the 2" wide tires and clearance to be able to run tires up to about 2.25" wide. Also, Shimano CUES drivetrain and Tektro hydraulics.

The wide tires provide such a cushy ride and don't slow me down a bit.
