It's not raining this evening! But supposed to storm later, though. So, rode around the neighborhood on the tandem with the wife/stoker. Least strenuous ride we've done this Spring.

I rode the 30 mile loop where the local fast guys ride regularly. It was a warm, sunny day with very little wind. The 85 degree air was a mild taste of what will be coming in the months ahead.

One of my long ago riding buddies is working his way back into riding shape after years of not riding and adding several extra pounds. We left well ahead of the main group to avoid killing ourselves trying to hang with their jackrabbit start on the two early hills.

He rode pretty well, but had to take it easy on the hills. It was a nice change to be the one waiting at the top. I did the lion's share of pulling on the flats, but did enjoy tucking in behind for a breather now and then. We ended up with a decent time that I would have been very proud of a few years ago when I was the one trying to shake off the cobwebs and the pounds.

Bikes: Yes.

After literally being floored by some sort of microbe Saturday night, I was able to get back on the Look today. 41 miles, some climbing, and I rode just okay. Part of that was being careful and part was psychological - I have a triathlon coming up this weekend and I'm starting to taper.

My Easton wheels are on the bike, and it responds very well and handles better, but climbs no better (the legs, the legs, my kingdom for the legs!!). Tomorrow I'll fit the 11-28t cassette and give it a try!

Managed to get in about 105 miles over the week between blasts of rain with wind from all directions at 15mph gusting to 30mph at times . Nothing over 30 miles at a time though. Mostly 20 milers with about 1100 ft climbing, some about 1500 ft. I've been concentrating on getting my average cadence back up to 88-92 again and it's slowly speeding up. I think it's time to do some reps on some of the short nasty hills ( 12 - 15% grade) around here. Looking at the numbers it doesn't look too bad after being off the saddle for 35+ years.

Monday was a rest day and Tuesday was a washout with more rain and thunderstorms coming.

I did...but I'm not sure why. I'd already done two epic, long & hard rides this week -- I was over 176 miles for the week and it was only Tuesday! -- but I had some free time, and I thought perhaps a gentle spin would be a good way for some "active recovery". So I did a very modest 15 miles, mostly just meandering around the Hudson River across from Manhattan.

My legs still hurt.

60 miles, sunny, not a cloud in the sky, 85 degrees. Not much wind until the last 5 miles. Great day to ride. Went to the beach, spent a lot of time at the Seal Beach pier chewing the fat with geezers like me. Enjoyed chocolate milk at the end of the ride.

My ride today was solo.
Miles today: 53+
Mileage this month APRIL: 909+ this could well be a 950 mile month (best ever)
Mileage this year: 2917+
Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 41.7%
Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: -2 days
Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +351 miles
Average miles per ride this year: 38+ (best ever)
Average miles per ride this month: 50+ (best ever)
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 4082, and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach.
I
had great weather this morning, 71⁰F when I left home at 6:15 AM and 89⁰F with East South East winds from 10 to 14 mph when I got back. However the humidity was brutal. I headed north on the trail to Mandarin and did the 4 mile loop, then back to the trail and on to Panera Bread for a bagels and iced tea. After leaving Panera I headed north through Heathrow to Sylvan lake Rd. Then took Sylvan Lake Rd west to the park. I did the normal loop in the park then to the northern trail head where I took my second break. Then it was homeward bound and into the wind, it was a perfect day.

Got out up on the BRP this afternoon for a 26 miles ride. Wonderfully cool in the low 50s up at elevation. Love that weather for riding and had a very good ride today.

I took the MTB to the trails, got everything set up and ready to go and noticed my cleats wouldn't click into the pedals. Then I noticed that I had on the shoes with SPD cleats but the bike had Crank Bros. Candy pedals.

Rode 16 mi. yesterday. Usual joy ride is 9 mi. Trying to up my base, to do a "Ride My Age" ride this year (56 if before Aug.). Nice day, sans tornadoes, hail, and high wind. Ride an old, garage-sale Fuji 12-spd.

Finally some ideal riding weather! Blue sky, 50f & no wind.

30 miles along the lake-front, I think I'll ride again today after a little lunch.

Rode to work today (anticipated round trip: 22 miles). Weather was just too nice to miss, and besides, I'd just read this article from RoadBikeRider.com https://www.roadbikerider.com/current...-try-next-ride that suggests the day before your "event" should not be a rest day but rather a short ride with a few modest efforts

...and I've got a ball-busting "event" scheduled for tomorrow. Hope RBR is right or I'mma be shelled tomorrow!

Good luck in your tri this weekend SARALS.
I went for ride the day after a rood canal. I can tell you thats not a good idea. I am truly not as smart as I would like to think I am. This was the first time ever that I had to call the wife to come pick me up cause I ran out of gas. This was one of my usual routes that I have done tons of times and was I ever glad to see her. Thanks honey. I needed that.

After several years of not doing it, got back on my ride two weeks ago, only to have my shoes separate from the soles (20+ years old, I can't complain!)and had to make do for the 2 miles back. New shoes, got on the bike today did about 5 miles early this morning, with no negative effects, which is a good thing. Figure start back on short rides for a short while, then progress longer and longer. Felt really good this AM!!

I've discovered one thing: It's a whole lot easier to get out of shape than back in shape again!

Today's ride was a bit of a disappointment, but at least I was able to get out and ride a bit, which I've not been able to do for three weeks. Only 13 miles, with nice temps and a bit of moderate breeze. I wimped out... a few reasons, but no excuses.

There's always next weekend. Or at least the weekend after that, since I have to work next weekend.

Your speed for the last 20 minutes or so is really impressive! And at only about 70 bpm or so! I'm a fan!

Actually, following a root canal (which I've never had to endure, fortunately) I'd probably spend a few days whimpering in bed.
