No. I hurt too much (dammit).

rickstermax 07-25-11 05:40 AM

I made the decision to get back at it and rode yesterday morning for the first time this year... been lazy. Did 12 miles in the heat and it really kicked my butt. Got a flat and walked the last 1/4 mile back to the truck. Gonna head out to get a new tube and see if I can keep the momentum up and get some miles in today.

berner 07-25-11 06:14 AM

Yo Rick. I began riding last year and with no plan to do so, the miles began to pile up. I got up to 30 mile then 50 mile rides and found myself a good distance from the house or my car. I occurred to me, when 25 miles from the starting point that a flat or other mechanical problem would be a huge hassle. Now I carry a flat kit, two tubes and often, a folding tire that weighs a mere 6 or 7 ounces and a multitool.

Those 6 mile rides are the best! Just the thing to give you something good to think about as you go about the day. Though the fly bites are another story. Black flies?

richyankee 07-25-11 07:19 AM

18 miles Sunday around mid day (pretty hot and humid). 610 for the season so far. My SO came along for the first leg and id starting to enjoy riding. That's a good thing!

Finally got a road ride in! 1st one in a couple of weeks due to an unwillingness to ride the asphalt furnace. Its nice to have a rail trail but... With a friend we did 27 country miles that even include a couple of hills.

Made it a two-fer on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Friday and Saturday. I was planning to ride on sunday as well, but was completely exhausted by the heat on Saturday.

Friday I did 84 miles, some on the Parkway, and some in the valley. The ride included the climb up Rt 56 from Vesuvius to the parkway. Brutal in the heat.

Saturday I did a 100-mile ride, with 9000+ feet of climbing between Roanoke Mt and Smart view, with a detour down into Roanoke, which gave me a few unplanned extra feet of climbing:

I got a couple of refreshing showers, including while I was doing the 1800 ft. climb up from Roanoke Mountain (1070 ft to 3000 ft or so.) Still despite hydrating as much as possible, and taking in a lot of electrolytes and other nourishment, I was getting really bad leg cramps, and feeling pretty bad. At the end of the ride, I couldn't eat because I was so nauseated.

It was overall a nice experience, but I would have enjoyed it 10 times more with 10 degrees less heat and 90% less humidity...

Saturday: Lovely 45 mi. tandem ride into Napa County. The tailwind on the way home was excellent.

Sunday: 48+ miles with the group from the LBS Sunday ride. Folks showed up with whom I hadn't ridden in a while; it was great catching up, enjoying many repaved county roads, perfect summer weather. Just right for celebrating the end of the Tour.

Today Was AGreat Day To Ride

Yesterday I rode my 24 mile circuitous route around the central part of my city. When I got home, the Tour De France was on.

Watched it, became inspired to do another ride again today. An added 11 miles. Great, cloudy cool weather. Stopped at a market along the route, picked up a box of All Bran, had a healthy Breakfast and I'm ready for the day's challenges.

Still inspired, I'll be riding again tomorrow. about 20 miles.

DnvrFox 07-25-11 02:03 PM

15 miles recumbent, great weather. I am alternating between DF and bent.

jtaylor2 07-25-11 03:22 PM

15.1 miles.....last 1.5 in a driving thunderstorm. It's been so dry and hot here we really need the rain, but I wish it had held off just a few minutes longer.

rdtompki 07-25-11 06:30 PM

15 minutes death defying recovery miles on my single. I risked life/limb riding without my trusty Garmin 705. Absent were flight critical readouts: speed, elevation, grade, HR. I'm sure I averaged 28 mph, however.

teachme 07-25-11 07:33 PM

2.3 wonderfully fulfilling miles. Can I round that up to 2.5 miles for easy counting purposes?:innocent:

I added 12km to the tally, think that is around 7½ miles or so, first ride in about 2 weeks, been hot and humid here, one of those wonderful times where you come around a corner and run into a wall of wind, had thought of going further, but didn't want to face that wind again.....

teachme 07-26-11 06:55 AM

10.5 miles to the river and back, before work this morning.

LAriverRat 07-26-11 04:38 PM

84 degrees, 70% humidity, wind out of the EAST?, cloudless. Got in 60 miles on my beach route. Just an all around great day here in SoCal. Usually the wind is out of the west but today had a tail wind on the way home. Enjoyed it almost all the way home except the last 5 miles which was a headwind. Got to see the latest fashion in beach wear today. Oh My!

Shifty 07-26-11 06:19 PM

Yes, an excellent 57 mile ride past lakes, farms, forests and peppermint fields. The temps were in the upper 70's, enough of a north wind to make the last 25 miles fast and fun.

rck 07-27-11 09:24 AM

16 miles yesterday on the Badger trail, had to carry the bike around one downed tree and was able to ride around another. Weather permitting, hoping for a road ride tomorrow.

sarals 07-27-11 11:28 AM

14 easy miles on the 26th. I have to do something!

berner 07-27-11 03:50 PM

Rdtomki, very impressive. I hope you realize we are elderly here with less than perfect hearts. It just so happens that some folks may try to copy your efforts with dire consequences so that you may want to scale back the ride descriptions. You know, I'm sure, how there things go - monkey see, monkey do.

I'm working toward getting in good enough physical condition to do a club century in September. On the one hand, it is relatively straight forward to gradually ramp up the mileage. So today I rode 71 miles, cut short from 75 miles because the legs were beginning to give out and the last few miles has a fairly steep hill that would have killed me. But little in life is that straight forward. I've been having a problem in the last month with chafing in a ... umm, ...problematic area. Fortunately, I've been carrying about a tablespoon full of chamois lube in a tiny zip lock bag in the first aid kit. I was able to stop and re-lube, half a dozen times, as necessary.

This problem highlights one problem of longer rides and that is, if you do have some sort of problem, you are a long ways from your beginning point. If there is a lesson here, particularly a lesson for people in the 50+ who may be new to cycling, it is to ramp up the effort carefully and deliberately.

With warnings out of the way, I rode 71 miles with 25 miles of new terrain, on a gorgeous day along Buzzards Bay in Massachussets. I got up at 5 AM and was riding at 6:30 in delicious cool temps. One of the pleasures of riding in this area is that there is water everywhere with superb views and surprisingly little traffic. I have said elsewhere on this forum that drivers and dogs are bike friendly. Today began cool for the season and never got too hot. In any case, many roads are shaded under a forest canopy so that it is almost always well bearable. I'm aiming to ride a club century in September but if I'm not up to it, there is a 75 mile option which as far as I'm concerned, that is quite amazing compared to where I was at this time last year.

DnvrFox 07-27-11 05:06 PM

15 miles and a swim.

GoGranny 07-27-11 05:15 PM

Just the quick 6 mile round trip from my house to the crossroads. Turns out lots of the locals use this narrow, hilly country road as a MUP. I've met other cyclists, joggers and walkers. I wouldn't be surprised to meet someone on a horse. Of course, we share the road with speeding commuters and farmers on tractors who are moving bales of hay from the field to the barn. A motley crew indeed.

rdtompki 07-27-11 05:51 PM

20+ miles on the tandem doing with some out-of-the-saddle practice; we're actually getting better. 'bout to taper for the Marin 100K a week from Saturday. Yes, we're wimps, but the Century has 7000' of climbing.
