Wore my Bike Commuter hat today: 20 miles. Perfect weather this morning, a bit hot in the pm but low humidity. Predicting 100+ tomorrow. Think I'll drive to work - I need to drop off a bunch of bike parts and accessories at Freewheelin' Community Bikes after work. For instance, a Blackburn Low Rider rack - not used for a long, long time.

My son came over this morning for our second ride since he moved out last Friday. The wife also went along, her first first time on the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail. She loved the trail and did an impressive 10 miles, not bad for only her second time on the bike this season. She has been working 50 hours a week and going to grad school to get her Masters. , We hit the trail about 11:00am with the temps around 75 degrees and 27% humidity, perfect weather, perfect ride.

Yep, I rode, and crashed. Told myself to take it easy because of the heat, but pushed too hard, lost focus and sideswiped the curb pushing to get uphill. Scratched the bejeebers out of my right seat stay, blew the front tube, took the finish off part of my rear derailleur. I don't think I bent anything. Have a new wheel I just purchased so now is a good time to put it on I guess. Pretty good dings in old rim.

It was supposed to be an easy 5 mile out and 5 mile back ride. I stopped to rest at 5 mile and check my HR - 190 to 200. Almost couldn't count the beats. Ooooops. Sure didn't feel like I was working that hard. Had to be the heat.

Went out and fell off as welll, trying out beartrap pedals onmy commuter bike . Got back on and rode 10 miles before I stiffened up, but I'm taking today and Friday off, I think , more due to temps (100+) than aything else. Treated road rash and sore shoulder , but nothing too grievous . My Giant Cypress is a tall perch to fall from , IMO .

Rode the usual route and kept a moderate to fast pace. Felt good, no problems with me or the bike. The temps and humidity were unexpectedly cool (81*F) and dry (< 50%) for some reason. Supposed to be in the high 90's this weekend with heat indexes in the 110-115 range. I guess I'll just sweat and enjoy the ride, anyway.

Only 25 miles today.

Weather was a beautiful 71 degrees with low humidity at 9am and got in 28 miles. The next few days are forecast to be scorchers in NY.

Found a pretty flat farm road to ride that has some rollers similar to the ones in Central Florida. Got a late start but managed to get in a 25 mile ride before the neat started baking the road. Setting out early in the morning to a bike path that I have been wanting to ride for a few years now. It runs from Savanna, IL to Moline, IL and is about 50-60 miles long. Have to travel about 15 miles to get to it and hope to get in at least 30 miles.

Commuted to work today, but supposed to meet the missus on the way home for a few extra miles tonight.

I rode 40 mile with loaded panniers along the Sakonnet River to Sakonnet Point, overlooking block Island Sound. Another awesome day with moderate temps, deep blue skies and sunlight reflecting off the water like tiny diamonds. Met up with two women from New Jersey at Sakonnet point, vacationing in the area and based in Dartmouth for their holiday. One of the women knew my home town area as she had cycled from Port Jervis, on the Pennsylvania and New York border, to New Paltz, a distance of about 60 miles. I especially liked that neither of these two lovely ladies looked the slightest bit athletic but were clearly experienced and strong cyclists.

I'm beginning to develop a theory that being retired provides time to observe surroundings and thus develop an appreciation for what is there. Already, the best part of being retired is having no need to hurry.

I rode 17 miles on the Badger trail. A friend gave me a ride that distance north to New Glarus and after a heavy lunch and a lot of water I rode back to Monroe. Temp hit 100 so I guess it wasn't the smartest idea to hit the trail at 1230pm, am would have smart. I got home and finished my stretching by realizing that the floor was really quite comfortable and it was time for a nap.

I had a dentist appt. today, so I decided to take the bike to the dentist, then over to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for my wife. Nice day for a ride, went a little over 17 miles on the trip and saved myself one gallon of gas!

Nice ride, I grew up near the area.

I rode the regular out and back route this afternoon. Used a hard and fast pace with 2 sprints thrown in for good luck. Had a head wind on the south return leg, it served to cool things down a bit. The heat wave is supposed to hit this weekend and the temps and humidity go way up.

Played Bike Mechanic in the garage after work, then took a 5-mile ride to and from a local subdivision with a few very short but somewhat steep hills to make sure that I have my low gears' shifting dialed in. Amazing what a little cleaning/lubing of the drivetrain and finessing of cable tension can do.
Forgot to mention that it was about 100 degrees while riding. Planning to ride to work tomorrow with another afternoon forecast of 100. Two water bottles for the ride home. With ice.

Mort Canard 06-28-12 08:53 PM

Put in a nice little 18 mile ride this evening after the heat broke. It's been over 100 deg. every day since Sunday and one has to be careful to keep hydrated. So rides after work have been kept at 20 miles or under. Looking forward to some morning rides this weekend. :D

If you have not already done it, find Swamp Road, it goes east not too far from Sakonett point. Follow the roads along the coast. If you don't mind a dirt road go into Wilbour Woods. A summer camp for the indians at one time. A plaque on a stone wall that marks the farm that started the "Rhode Island Red" chickens, somewhere along the way. Tons of stuff to see.

berner 06-29-12 06:01 AM

2many, that's just about what I did. From Sakonnet point I went East on Swamp Road, then down to the Little Compton town beach for a lunch break and to watch girls in bikinis.

I did not know about the Rhode Island Red home farm. As a little boy I had a pet R. I. R. She followed me all over so I have a soft spot that particular breed. She was a fine, beautiful big bird and affectionate. I miss her. Will have to visit her ancestral homeland, so to speak.

35½ miles today. My legs were back. Tomorrow is a rest day after 6 days in a row cycling(35½ every day except Thursday(25 miles) ≈ 203 miles for the week)

jimdawgfan 06-29-12 08:05 AM

Just got my "new" Craigslist bike (2000 Giant Option Hybrid) back from the LBS and then I installed new tires and tubes. Then went out for a 7 mile shakedown ride. Bike rode like a dream. I have not ridden in 10 years. Back then it was mostly off road stuff in our area. It took its toll on this 57 year old body. But now I want to work on fitness and strength and that stubborn 5 lbs of fat around my waist.
I can't tell you how great it felt to have the wind in my face again. A nice feeling of Freedom..... I did remember pretty quickly to get my butt off the saddle when riding over bumps.

Hope to see some of you who live near Tampa, in the future...

Ride On :thumb:

Was supposed to go for a easy ride with the wife this morning at about 10 so went out for a quick 21 miles on the MUP to warm-up. The heat certainly warmed me up and glad I went out early. Got home and the wife says it's to hot and so no riding with her today. Based on forecast might use tomorrow as rest day.

Woohooo!!!! :D

Did an early morning ride today in the cool of the day. Great fun after sweating out some very hot evening rides this week. Have another one planned tomorrow morning with my local Saturday morning bunch.

John_V 06-29-12 03:53 PM

Sunrise here in NW Illonois was at 5:30 this morning with a cool 60* temp. Loaded the bike and headed to Savanna for my ride and it started raining. Went back to the house and then tried a bit later, rained again with some killer winds. Decided to stay home. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

I'm fond of the Norwegian Blue myself. Lovely plumage. Mine doesn't seem too lively, though. I think it's pining for the fjords.

Anyway, I rode 22 very hot miles today, first time on a bike for a week. I used a spare bottle to spray me down, but spraying myself with hottub water wasnt too refreshing. If I ride tomorrow, it's going to be early.
