Rode 25.6 miles this afternoon.

Rode 18 miles this afternoon....a little windy but I no longer let that stop me!
|
My bike is a steel hybrid fitted out for touring w/fenders and front/rear racks, 700x40 tires. I'm 62, returned to pedaling about a month. My avg spd has been 12.5 on 24 mile rides until recently, when I extended some rides to 33-36 miles, still at 12.5. Terrain is rolling hills, top pedaling speed on the flats around 18-20. Now the 23-24 milers are averaging 13.6, so I must be getting into better shape. Ride data from wired Schwinn computer. There was a front coming through today so I guess I had a tail wind for the first part, but a head wind for the middle part, and it rained on me the last six miles. Riding more is better, but I mix in a rest day here and there and do a short ride the day following a long ride, and gradually build back to a longer ride. :thumb: Yesterday I rode 17 miles avg 13.6, today I rode 23 miles avg 13.7.

Won't be riding today because the weather is miserable, leaves are falling and wet leaves = no fun at all.
I rode the other day: 26 miles and change / 1000' of climb. On a flat-ish closed course of 12 miles I did 21 mph, no aero anything, wind was calm. So my story this season is "couch to 21 mph in six months". I'm starting to enjoy hill climbs on the Siena. Low gear is 39 x 27, so any climb worth mentioning involves some out of the saddle time. It's all about finding the right pace, right rhythm, being smooth. |
Riding the Rails to Trails Century tomorrow with two of my riding buddies. It'll be a first attempt for a century for one of them so today we just did a nice and easy 22 mile ride. His longest ride is 66 miles and he did it without any problems so he shouldn't have any in his century attempt tomorrow.

A club ride today - 50 miles on the tandem on a moderately hilly route. Temp has dropped 30 degrees in the last day or two: 40's and windy today but dry.
|
Group ride from Tallahasse down to St. Marks Lighthouse this morning. 50.5 miles. Great weather. Great people. Great afternoon nap.

48.87 on the tandem today in the autumn version of the 4th year of the semi-annual CCRT ride of some of us C&V forum members (whew, that's a mouthful).

Oooof, 112 miles, 10.3K of climbing. I keep biting off more than I can chew. Rode down through Raphine/Vesuvius, to Stuarts Draft and then up over the Blue Ridge Parkway on Reeds Gap. Down past Wintergreen, and back over the parkway via Crabtree Falls.
I have to get some lower gearing, I'm afraid. I had to walk part of the Reeds Gap climb. I've done this climb two other times, and it was hard, but I made it. This time I just didn't have it. The climb back up through Montebello was killer too. Cold day mostly, and super windy. Falling leaves make me a bit sad... Bike Ride Profile | 111 miles near Lexington | Times and Records | Strava |
Not today, but I rode yesterday...
20.5 miles here in Richmond, VA on my old Schwinn Alum Comp MTB. I don't have a road bike (yet), but I rode it like one which beat me to death. Especially trying to ride hard into the wind. It just didn't get the job done as efficient as I would have liked. But at least I got out there and got a good workout. I was just slow and lumbering but I eventually made my way back home. That app MapMyRide showed me with a top speed (downhill, 21st gear, in a tuck) of only 28 mph. Slowest speed was around 6 mph, alternating between the small and middle chainrings, fighting the wind riding up a hill. But like "the little engine that could", I made it. Avg speed: 10.8 mph. Miles: 20.5 Time: 1 hour 53 min. Calories burned: 1336 (6'0", 215lbs, age 53) I should seriously get a true road bike and stop this nonsense of trying to ride a MTB like a road bike! It just doesn't work. Well, I mean, it does... but you get my point... Riding 20.5 miles on a true road bike, would have only taken maybe an hour at max! |
Took in the usual distance of 25.6 miles, but on the newer route I started Thursday. The fall cool weather felt very nice for a change.

30 Smiles yesterday.
Had some problems with two of my lights. So checked for the problem today. |
We didn't get our Rails to Trails century done today. Had a late start, spent too much time at some of the SAG stops and one of my riding buddies was having problems with the hills. This is his first ride, with hills, after his prostate surgery and that little forward lean while climbing was just enough to put pressure where he didn't need it. Ended up with 63 miles so we did a Metric Century instead.

Ten local miles this afternoon, including the steepest, but very short, local hill.

Saturday 62.6 miles @ 17.6 ave on the club ride
Sunday 37.1 miles @ 16.3 ave on the club ride |
26 miles late this afternoon . It was hard: I hadn't eaten except for a yogurt for breakfast and a banana just before the ride. Motor just didn't wanna go! I made it go anyway, sort of. On the upside I managed to diagnose an occasional lazy shifting problem that's been bugging the snot out of me and fixed that after getting home.

I rode my Safari hybrid 40 miles this afternoon, averaged 13.5 mph. A pretty good workout on a beautiful day. I was a bit spent at 37 miles and had to stop for a candy bar and water break; it helped me recover from the 15 miles into a headwind before I turned and made the last few back to the car.

56 mi today 3,000 ft
5 mi of it steep dirt. That knocked the average speed down to 13. |
I rode 37 miles Sunday afternoon on an old hybrid bike. I left from a University, so going across campus slowed me down some. Then I headed south into a strong wind that really slowed me, sometimes to about 7 mph. Coming back I had the wind at my back most of the time. Then I rode around campus some more, hit the gym showers and soaked in the hot tub.

First coolish Monday in South Florida so two of us started slow...for 90 minutes. Went great for 56 miles averaging 17.2.
Then strong wind picked up as returned East. Did 87 miles at 16.8 as I pulled most of final 30 miles. Could have gone longer but decided to leave it for another day. At least rode more than my age (69) and still hope to do Century again this year. |
A meager 27.6 miles this afternoon.

25.9 miles this afternoon. Despite the 40 mile ride yesterday I felt really good going out the first 12 miles until I realized I'd had a strong tailwind. Took a side turn, headed back into the wind for a rough pull back to the car. 2 hour ride, averaged 12.4 mph. Stamina building is hard work.
|
I rode a new route this afternoon, 22mi., 11 out and 11 back. The outbound was at 22.4 mph avg., the out and back with no rest between was 20.6 mph. avg.
I have found a Strava route where I should be able to make KOM , my out and back was 2nd fastest over all, 1st is in an age group 20 years younger than I. There was a 14-17 mph cross wind to deal with. |
