20 mi - Peters Canyon Bike Trail - Orange County CA
Thought I'd share a shot of urban riding in the concrete canyons of LA http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=411232 |
So this is retirement, where the toughest decision I have to make is which bike (out of the 4) to ride in the morning. I like it.
It's definitely fall. Long sleeve t-shirt under a bike jacket, long pants, full fingered gloves. I lived too many years in the sunny SoCal climes where 50° is considered cold. 45° for the morning ride, but, the afternoons have been sunny and warm (shorts & t-shirt) so I've been taking advantage of that for a second ride. That one involves taking the SUV to the bike path (too much auto & truck traffic at that time of day). Gonna' turn cold(er) next week. Still averaging 18mi/day, 28+ w/afternoon rides. 2014: 3,517 Miles/275 Hrs — Weekly Avg: 107 |
97.6 miles @ 16. 3 ave today, the club ride plus an extra 37 mile loop.
|
37 miles with some of the riders doing this months Cost to Coast Ride with me.
|
27.7 miles this afternoon.

Rode this morning with a friend who's getting into cycling at 50+, more or less. He wasn't ready for "fast nor far" (for that matter, neither am I) so we had a very pleasant 23 miles of nice relaxed puttering along. Got to visit with three other cyclists who were riding in the area. Wish I could do that daily. :)

29.8 miles this afternoon, avg 13.2 mph on my heavy hybrid. A nice workout for mid-80's temps. Tomorrow promises 20 degrees cooler and I want to push for 50 miles.

Today and yesterday: Hilly Hundred Weekend in Southern Indiana. 57 hilly miles yesterday and 43 hilly miles today. 6704 total feet of climbing. (Walked up one hill.)
Not hot, not cold, no rain = :thumb: I started doing the Hilly in 1976 and have missed only a few. One of the rest stops: http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...M/IMG_3629.jpg |
My sweetie and I did 51.7 miles on the tandem today. It was a beeeeyoutiful New England fall day, cool, bright, dry. We're just past a full moon. Today we got a full sun.

27.7 again, beautiful weather again. Had to bail out as a truck turned in on me in a lot, guess he wasn't paying attention, washed out the front wheel. No damage to the bicycle, I managed to break its fall. Barked my Rt elbow, though, it'll heal quickly, thankfully.

Another 60+ mile Sunday. Got in a good 67 mile ride today, making it 3 weekends in a row of 60+ mile rides.

Easy 71 mile ride up the coast with club mates (I'm in the Moots kit). The Pacific Ocean was beautiful today.
South of Swami's in Encinitas, CA. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=411502 |
Had to cut things a bit short this am : 32 miles, 2100' of climbing. I've been busy this last three months even in retirement, but my birthday is looming, an event that will require a 69 mile ride probably with 5000' of climbing. I've got 3-4 weekends to ramp up the weekly miles and, more important, get in some good climbing. I'm wondering what happened to my vision of riding 5-6 times a week in retirement, but I am enjoying life.

Forgot to post yesterday. 37.1 miles @ 18.0 ave.

Cut things short this afternoon at 16.5 miles due to rain and stiff, gusty winds hitting our area. A front is headed through tonight and tomorrow.
Jim, for some reason I'm seeing a grade B sci-fi movie in my mind right now.... Bill |
Thirty five miles this morning trying to beat the rain; and we did. Wind really picked up halfway through the ride and slowed things down a bit. The increased wind made it really hard for the wife on her ride today.
|
Snuck in 32 miles this am before the rain which is due in about 2 months (if we're lucky). Temps have finally dropped; the last days breaking 90 degrees are now in our rear view mirror.

On vacation this week in sunny AZ. I've been reading the various threads about Mt. Lemmon in Tuscon, and decided that today would be the day. A glorious sunny day, as are seemingly most days in the desert.
Unfortunately, my bad directions ended up with 8 unneccessary miles riding up (and back down) starting from the Safeway store corner of Sabino Canyon Rd & E Tanque Verde Road, only to discover that this road was the wrong one. A few miles further along E Tanque Verde is another Safeway store at the corner of E Catalina Hwy. My bad. Finally got off along the correct road by 10am. Forecast temperatures of 93 today - late start. Oh well. First, I have to say what a beautiful area this is. The views from the Mt. Lemmon road are fantastic. I just wish I could have seen all of them. By 1:30, contrary to JPPE's comment that "anybody can ride this", I quit, or should I say, made the decision to terminate the ride before I had to be rescued by someone. Leg cramps and nausea were enough. 17 miles and 4300 ft. At one point along the ride I decided to give up cycling entirely. With the perspective of a few hours recovery, I've decided not to sell the bikes. Still not sure about attempting this ride again. All in all, a good day. Beautiful scenery, challenged to my limits, and live to see another. That's a good day. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5598/...44dab2a8_c.jpg |
The regular 27+ mile ride/route this afternoon. Cold front made it through this morning so the temps were much cooler and fall like. Winds were stiff out of the NW.

h2o, nice pic!
I just did my commute again. Took a different bike this time. It seemed like the right choice. CCPP (crappy cell phone pic), junk and all: http://users.rcn.com/jimmuller/pics/...tTheOffice.jpg |
I rode 14.4 miles putting the 119th mile on a new Brooks B17 saddle. No need to push the edge of tolerance for a new Brooks. More per ride later as the new cowhide softens.
Jeff Warmshowers got me back in cycling mode, even though I still worry about cell users. Lots of people going through Western Washington going towards the sun in California. |
Short and sweet 13 mile blast around the Sunset Trail at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek WI. Cold and windy and muddy as heck....loved it!
