16 miles late Tuesday/early Wednesday morning after 40 minute indoor HIIT session. Too hot to ride earlier in the day. And I wanted to test ride after putting new padded tape on the bar. Much nicer on my injured shoulder on real roads, especially chipseal. Shoulder still aches after about 15-20 miles but it's slowly coming along.

A good day: 13.45 mi., 1:00:15. About 1 mph above my usual speed. Felt strong and was able to turn over slightly taller gears.

MidSouthBiker 07-18-18 11:29 AM

I heard the weatherman say that today will be the first day in about a month we will have a high temp. below the daily average. It's still 90 F.
And with the daily afternoon and evening showers the humidity is sky high. It was about 80% when I started out on my ride this morning.
Nevertheless, I am sticking to my plan of riding early in the morning, doing shorter rides and lower cadence on the single speed.

Got in 84 minutes.

Beautiful day in Indiana. Had to resist the urge to again bike to work this morning - wanted to get out for a ride after work, which I did. 20 miles over the White river bridge, out into Decatur township and then Morgan County. And back again. Saw freshly painted raindrop Dan Henrys on some of the roads: Saturday will be the annual Ride Across Indiana. 160 miles from Terre Haute to Richmond. None for me thanks, but a tip of the helmet to those who do RAIN.

No ride yesterday. Got in a very wet 50 miles this morning in a thunderstorm that wasn’t supposed to show up until later in the morning.

Location: Florida. TS always show up (even unexpectedly) this time of year.

40 very hot miles Thursday afternoon/evening. Temperature started at 107 -- some local forecasts claimed 109. Joined the Tour de Fort Worth group ride with about 50 other equally heat addled folks. Temp was still 103 by the time I got home after 9 pm.

Pretty challenging start for my return to longer rides on the drop bar road bike since the May injury. Felt like bailing out after the first 10 miles, but kept chugging along until either I felt better or roasted enough brain cells that I didn't care anymore.

No problems with the thunderstorms showing up. But with all the technology we have at our fingertips, nowadays, one would hope for some modicum of accuracy. I guess I’ll have to start depending on my big toe again. :)

I did my longest ride EVER (well, so far) this morning at 9:00am... 42 miles total.... 3 hours and 2 minutes exact....

If you have 5 minutes to spare, check out the video I made early this morning before the ride, showing that MapMyRide site on my laptop and then going outside to my beloved C&V 1985 Fuji Del Rey road bike:

Anyway, here's the main map:

Everyone was at work by now, and the backroads were virtually empty! This was at Manakin Rd, coming off Snead Rd & Hockett Rd, in the western suburbs of Richmond, VA in Goochland County.

I got hit up by the road construction along Broad St. (Route 250 -- at the top of the map), and a cop stopped me, warning me to be careful. I pulled over into the Shell gas station to survey the situation and take a quick photo.

Lastly, here is a new area they just built inside West Creek Pkwy that is an incredible Craft Brewery that recently opened up. I would have gone in there, but obviously they weren't open yet...

An Old Friend

Haven't ridden my Sirrus Comp for about a year. Today I rode her along the Cape Cod Canal and around the Mass Maritime Academy campus and the bike performed like it has for the last 10 years. Like being with an old friend.

Rode up to the ski resort today. 45 Miles, very fast descent. I knew I didn't get much sleep last night, but I really struggled to get to the top. Once at the top I saw my rear brakes were rubbing, wheel wouldn't spin freely at all. That won't ever happen again, It was a very cool 75° There was a good crowd of downhill riders taking the lift to the top. They were all very young.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...28aaf0720a.jpg

These guys didn't ride one foot uphill. Some of them didn't even drive up there, they took the bus. if I was 45 years younger I would join them.

canklecat 07-21-18 11:42 AM

38 miles with group for local event, then breakfast, home before the temp reached 100. Supposed to hit 109 today.

Hondo Gravel 07-21-18 11:55 AM

31.68 this morning back around 11:30. 105 forecast here today was 105 yesterday suppose to get to 108 on Monday.

MidSouthBiker 07-21-18 12:23 PM

Last night that front from the north came through bringing us tornado watches and then light showers. Nothing like what it did north of us in Iowa.
The good news is that it caused a wind shift from the humid southerly winds to dryer northwesterly winds. So we are supposed to have lower humidity levels the next couple days. We will see about that.
However it is still hot at around 90F. But I managed 94 minutes this morning.

Ilfalco2 07-21-18 02:31 PM

52 miles today.....got out early so I could watch the tour.

zacster 07-21-18 06:02 PM

The Epic Ride, to support the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway initiative. It was 38 miles, plus 8 to get there and 9 to come home, 56 all together (note. Results may not foot due to rounding...) Anyway the cool part was I was the first to finish. It wasn't a race, but I was riding with someone that went with me because I knew the way, and towards the end I turned to her and mentioned that we hadn't seen anyone else for the last 15 miles. We had skipped the mid ride rest area. At the very end, 3 guys came off a side street that got a little lost but I turned up the juice just so I could say I finished first. We all joked about it at the after party.

I was at 155 total for the week, and after yesterdays ride I saw I was 99. I'd have made that last mile if I'd known while on the bike, not that it matters.

10 mile hill repeats - fastest of the season

John_V 07-21-18 08:08 PM

Rained out yesterday and this morning but I did manage a very hot, humid and windy 30 mile, afternoon ride before the thunderstorms came. It’s not looking very good right now for a ride tomorrow.

OldTryGuy 07-22-18 07:07 AM

Got back home at 4AM today with 102 miles finally concluding a ride that began at 11:41PM Friday night. Managed a 31 mile warm up, not that I needed the warming up since starting temp was 84F with ultra-high humidity, before the clouds released the stored rain. Rained throughout yesterday and it wasn't until 11PM that things really presented an opportunity to get back out to complete what I started 24 hours earlier. Had a wonderful view of SpaceX Falcon ascending until MECO.

Rains are predicted for the entire week so I have chosen the 102 miles to be my designated ride for bicycling friend Pete Cornell killed 6 years ago only days from completing his Prudhoe Bay, AK to Key West, Florida bicycling adventure.

John_V 07-22-18 11:40 AM

Had a nice break in the weather this morning. It didn't rain, as the forecast predicted, so I went on a nice 40 mile, hot, humid and windy ride.

MidSouthBiker 07-22-18 11:56 AM

Those northwesterly winds continue to bring us lower temps, humidity, and especially lower heat indexes ( about 15 F lower).
I took advantage of the nicer weather, and went to one of my favorite east-west oriented roads, which is just under a mile long, and did 12 laps.
I got in one of my fastest rides of the year, and did 106 minutes.

25 mainly hills

Up to, around, and well past the Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, CO. First 5 miles all up, up, up. Then mostly hills until the last 3 where I reap what I have sewn with some fast downhill. 2000 Trek X01, Have cycled off and on for the last 4ish years. Am now gonna hunker down to really do this, enjoy the hell out of it, while cycling all around the Pikes Peak region... to get weigh down, cardio way up, and mind in sync with this glorious area.

24 miles on the Screamerlate this morning between rain showers.

John00 07-22-18 09:50 PM

50 miles. Out again on my usual route. Temperatures were in the high 80s. I've been taking two days off between ride to recover, but today with only one day's rest I felt very fast and strong.I don't know, Ive definitely noticed the moods you get when you over train. I've been riding long rides every other day for many years. Maybe I'm need to start a new activity, there are a lot of mountains around here covered with hiking trails. Might do some of that.

Good lord no! Today was my first day off the bike in over a week!

Spent nine days on vacation in Colorado: Rode the Triple Bypass (118 miles from Evergreen to Avon, with 11,000' of climbing, all at altitudes >7,000') then rode around the Boulder/Lyons/Estes Park area (still all at altitudes between 5,500-11,000'). Came home Friday night, and over the weekend did two modest rides on my new 'cross bike. Somewhere around 500 miles total for the past two weeks, I think. My legs feel okay. Still waiting for that "altitude boost" to kick in now that I'm back to sea level!
