For General Cycling Discussion?
Are they Canadian?
or
Do they come from Northern California?

Anything Merino wool, summer or winter. My favourites, I think were knitted in New Zealand, the land of sheep. They were quite thin, soft as a cloud, warm yet comfortable in summer. Sadly, Merino wool wears quite quickly, so of the 3 pairs I bought, only one is still viable

[Seriously]
I don’t know much about cycling-specific socks, but I’m a big fan of Darn Tough (Vermont). They’re pricey, but the pairs I bought five years ago are still in great shape—including the elastic. They also come with a lifetime guarantee, which I’ve used once without any hassle.
Aside: my doctor recommended compression socks, so I tried a few brands. None lasted more than a year. I stumbled onto Darn Tough a few years later and found they work just as well for me as compression socks. YMMV—it depends on the compression level you need—but for me (8–15 mmHg), they perform about the same as the purpose-built ones I bought.

I'm 76 and, as this can sometimes be a symptom of CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) that the cardiologist who placed two stents in one of my coronary arteries 19 years ago used to check for, I've switched to a sock product from DarnTough for work as well as bicycling that come up only just over my ankles:

I buy mine from REI but they should be available elsewhere as well.
Thankfully I've seen no recurrence of edema since I started wearing 'em a few weeks ago. They are pricey but so well made I'm glad they're available.

Same here! Been wearing 'em for most of the last decade, never worn out a pair yet.
Curious. I work (part-time) effectively three full days a week, on my feet in a hardware store for sometimes more than nine hours a shift. A few months ago I noticed evidence of edema in my calves at the end of a shift.

I used to sit on my butt too, looking at screens all day. Likely a major cause of the heart attack I had heading into work about 6:45 AM one morning, when I stopped at an ER a mile from my office. That morning was when I got the two stents.
Cardiologists since have never made mention of venous insufficiency in my conversations with them. CHF has come up a couple of times though while the one I go to now keeps telling me to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing 'cause it's working.

I guess your condition differs from mine. In my case, the veins don’t function properly, so blood pools below the knee. Without compression socks, my ankles swell noticeably (you can press a finger into them and the dent stays for a while before smoothing out). The ankle-length socks help contain the swelling and almost eliminate the mild pricking sensation it causes.

Indeed.
My 'symptoms' had a similar effect on my calf tissues above the point where the DT socks I'd been wearing ended, about mid-calf. After a day's shift @ work, when I took my boots off then the socks, there was quite evident swelling apparent that, when pressed with a finger, would leave a depression lasting minutes sometimes. It was clearly evident that the socks had been restricting circulation (likely both ways) at that point.
I'd sized my sock orders based on my shoe size so medium was what I'd ordered since I'm a 9-1/2'er. Maybe should go with LARGE next time? I might try a pair, see what happens, but I don't to wear want socks that fall down to my ankles. I donated the several pairs I'd been wearing to a second-hand resale shop rather than simply tossing 'em for landfill.
