There are Freds, Poseurs, and another group the Gearheads. Gearheads, back in the day, spent crazy amounts of money trying to lighten their bikes and build up super bikes with all the latest stuff. They were first to jump on the titanium bandwagon, and the low spoke, superlight wheels, anodized parts, drilium, etc. All this stuff wasn't going to make them any better a rider of course. Now the Gearhead is the common cyclist these days. Buying wheelsets, upgrading components, all in the effort to make them faster. Buying speed. Today the Gearhead is the predominant cycling group. Just read through the road forum and it's evident. Buy more stuff. Garmins, Powertaps, heart rate monitors and of course the number one upgrade, wheels. It's an interesting phenomenon in cycling, brought on by a generation overwhelmed with expendable income. Anda generation that believes taking suppliments will keep them going and make them better so that they can compete against their fellow overachievers. Bizaar stuff when you think about it.

yes, spending cubic dollars is no replacement for training and conditioning, but it does keep people employed. It seems from the descriptions, Freds but more tail lights than they need just as readily as poseurs buy jerseys they haven't earned.
That Freddy Hoffman story is quite something. Kinda sad.

Audible clue. Higher ranking Fred's jockey wheels can be heard squeaking a block away.

Absolutely hate the new hairdo....but if she was wearing a nice tight kit I could bring myself to get by the bad hair.

Actually "Fred" pretty much comes down to the old deal of the "real cyclist" fully kitted snobs. If you are not riding along head down on a DF racing bike with an all up cost of the bike and kit somewhere north of 3 4 or 5 thousand dollars you are consided a Fred.

1. Buy pinarello
2. Use every stem spacer
3. Install clip on aero bars and ride them at any speed your going, especially 14-16mph.
4. Get a saddle bag and lights, then run blinky trail light during daylight hours.
5. Do dangerous **** constantly while riding your bike, but make sure to also make disparaging remarks about the local group rides you think are unsafe and tell people who race they are "nuts".
Being a fred has zero to do with how much money you make or spend, it's behavior related.

Not at all accurate in my mind, and actually it's the guys on 10k dollar bikes who I often see as the biggest offender because they have no idea what they are even doing.

So true. I see them at the track- doodling around and chatting at 12-14 mph and weaving everywhere so you have to play dodge-em when practicing. I think they do the local group rides though- Pack-o-Freds.

I've been riding for over 50 years and this term was being applied then. It applies to everyone of us at one time or another.
I've always pinned it to someone who thought they were all that... but weren't. Someone who owns a 5K-10K bike but still rides without clips.
A rider who thinks they know all, but just doesn't really understand how to put his rear wheel back on after a flat.
A person braver than I for showing up dressed in a full team kit and makes sure everyone can see it, refusing to put a rain jacket on even when it's raining.
Someone like me, who tries to get into the tech talk without knowing what they are talking about!
So please just call me Fred when you pass me on the road. At least I'm up and riding, trying to workout and better myself.
